Birthday part 2 – Ghost, Lolly moving and Phil Parker Blooper

Deb and sister at GhostThis week –

– Ghost at Wimbledon Theatre – wow!

– Moving house – daughter finally decamps to own place in Godalming

– Phil Parker’s saucy question in this week’s blooper!

– And book of the week – from this year’s RNA novel of the year winner

Plus – one more week till my first novel goes up on Amazon! Hawaiian Affair – almost there!

Well since last week I featured part one, this week I’m continuing with the second part of my celebrations for my birthday on 10th. It included a lovely trip to one of my favourite theatres with my sis Linda Bignell ( the Red Carpet Manicure guest) – see top pic. We went to see the matinee on Saturday of the musical of one of my favourite films – and you know how often the stage play just doesn’t live up to your expectations? Well this one did! If you loved the film I truly believe you’ll love this show.

Oda mae brown ghostThe singing was super, the staging was powerful and the special effects were jaw dropping. Literally – I realised at one point – during the ghost-on-train sequence – that my jaw was wide open in amazement! Hehe!

Plus the de rigeur funny bits from a brilliant Wendy Mae Brown playing the Whoopi Goldberg role of Oda Mae Brown (I know – born to play the role or what! lol) added some much needed levity. Some ripped bare male bodies didn’t hurt proceedings either 😉

And a special mention to Bradley Jaden the understudy who replaced the usual Sam for our performance, and very good he was too. And of course then there were the cursory sad bits. There were a few tissues being handed around during the show, I can tell you! Anyway it’s thoroughly recommended – I’d give it a good eight and half out of ten and would definitely go see it again. Watch this trailer to find out more – it’s this week’s ‘watch’ too, it’s that good!

See the website for more info about where it’s on tour – it could be near you! And saves West End prices to see it in provincial theatres that’s for sure!

I am of course referring to the Carol Bayer Sager song, rather than saying ‘yay’ cos Lauren’s finally moved back out again (honest!) to her new home in Godalming with boyfriend Nick.

It’s a lovely little cottage, with a terraced, elevated back garden, where little Baloo the cocker spaniel, AKA crazy dog, can run amok. They moved out at the weekend and we helped do some of the shifting, well Mr Back of My Tandem did more than me ‘cos I was still feeling a bit fragile from the kidney infection I had for over a week (eurgh).

Anyway we celebrated their first night in the house with a takeaway and left them to it. But it means she’s so much closer to me now, I can finally do stuff like go for a coffee with my daughter and go to the cinema – and walk the dogs. In fact, we’re due to go see Gatsby Friday night – more news of that next week! But all in all, am a happy mummy now my girl’s back in town!

Ok so Phil Parker has known us for a long time – which means he has carte blanche to ask some very cheeky questions live on air sometimes! Honestly! Hehe – I don’t think he meant it, but his little faux pas during a recent cleaning show is a worthy blooper!

Still to come – sneaky peeks if you like your beauty products! And another extract from my novel!

READ IT, WRITE IT, SELL IT! – my weekly look at all things book!

Including hints and tips on writing your own novel, and news of my first one!

RNA logoRomantic Novelists’ Association

Was discussing the RNA the other week with a couple of writers and they didn’t know it exists!

So just for those of you thinking about penning your first romance novel, do look them up.

The Romantic Novelists’ Association is very supportive of new writers – they run a hugely oversubscribed New Writers’ Scheme, for would-be authors who haven’t been traditionally published yet (including me!).

RNA doAnd for the £130 or so annual fee you also get a full novel critique (these are usually more than £400 so it’s fab value.)

Click here to find out more.

Amongst other things they have regular seasonal get-togethers, mostly in London, including the one I went to this week where they announced the winners of the 2013 RNA awards.

Always worth looking out for the winners, particularly the overall novel of the year winner, as they are often very very good reads.

ShoesThey also have a big thing at these events, about who’s wearing the most fabulous shoes! So, naturally being a shoe person, I had to join in – and wore these! Funny ‘cos shoes feature in my novel too – for a very good reason though!

Sweetshop of dreamsBook of the Week – the RNA novel of the year

Fittingly, this week’s book of the week is the RNA novel of the year! Well done to Jenny Colgan, for Welcome to Rosie Hopkin's Sweetshop of Dreams, Sphere (Little Brown)

“Rosie Hopkins thinks leaving her busy London life, and her boyfriend Gerard, to sort out her elderly Aunt Lilian's sweetshop in a small country village is going to be dull. How wrong could she have been? Lilian Hopkins has spent her life running Lipton's sweetshop, through wartime and family feuds. As she struggles with the idea that it might finally be time to settle up, she also wrestles with the secret history hidden behind the jars of beautifully coloured sweets.”

Oooo! What’s the secret, what’s the secret!? It’s already got 96 five star reviews on Amazon,  so do go check it out here, you can read the first section online before buying. But usually the RNA winners are very good, so by default, it’s highly recommended! If you’ve read it, do leave me a review below to let me know your thoughts!

HammockDebbie’s First Novel – Update

And indeed I do hope you will let me know your thoughts on my first book too, if you decide to download it when the eBook serialisation begins next week! It’s very easy to download an eBook onto a kindle or a kindle app if you have a smartphone or computer with the app.

Otherwise don’t worry, the paperback will be following on, at the end of June! Only one week to go till the eBook is published, and counting!

Credit to raymastersAm getting a bit frantic now, with last-minute adjustments and tweaks, and formatting so it downloads ok.

The cover’s nearly done though, and I’m very pleased with it! Can’t wait for you to see it and to hear what you all think!

So roll on Friday 24th, when Hawaiian Affair will be going live on amazon and you can read for yourself the result of my three years of hard graft! Eeeek!

Meanwhile here’s another little extract – between Mac and Sadie the hero and heroine of my novel – just after they first meet.

Extract from ‘Hawaiian Affair’ by Debbie Flint – available on Amazon from May 24th.

"A loud ‘fairy-tale’ alert was ringing in her ears. The thought of getting up close and personal with     this sexy stranger was like her purest fantasy. But this wasn’t a fantasy – it was real life. Although,     come to think of it, the whole of the last month had been something of a dream… so why break the     spell now? Winning a competition, jetting off to far flung corners of the earth to pick up her prize,     and beginning the helter skelter business ride she was now clinging onto by her fingertips. So why     not add a fling? No-one would know. And if she didn’t do it now, it might be months – years – before     she got another chance for a no-strings encounter like this.

    ‘Well?’ he asked.

‘A-are you always such a quick worker?’ she gasped.

‘Only with anyone in a tight navy suit and very inappropriate footwear.’

    ‘Even the women?’

    He laughed.

‘Mac – I need you – now please!’ came the Captain’s voice again.

‘With you in a sec, Cap’n. Just finishing up here.’ He turned to Sadie, ‘Or have we just started?’

    She smiled.

He beamed back at Sadie, he genuinely glowed, and she felt a thrill of awareness, a rush of adrenalin. And an overpowering urge to dance a little.

‘So you’ll come?’ His pleasure was so youthful, so exuberant. But romantic interludes had definitely not been on the agenda this trip. Oh God…

    She frowned.

‘Look,’ he said, ‘if you’re too busy, or you don’t want to, then just say. I’m a bit out of practice at all this asking-out stuff. It’s just that you happen to be very attractive,’ to which Sadie looked down before she started blushing, ‘and fun. Plus I happen to be celebrating the end of an era, so I’d like very much for you to join me. If you’d like to. Unless you have other plans…’

    ‘It’s not that.’

‘Or maybe you’ve already got someone.’

    ‘It’s not that either…’

‘Well, I would like to meet you this evening…’

    ‘I sense a ‘but’.’

‘…but, well,’ she bit her tongue. Her usual response was so nearly out of her mouth – but I have to get back to my children. But for once, she didn’t.

Not for precisely 22 hours and fifteen minutes.

She took a deep breath.

Come back next week for full info and links.

Brother– Silly Bruvva! For those that read last week’s blog comments, you’ll have noticed one from a certain brother. So it serves him right that I’m featuring his recent facebook post – Del Boy Flint is a bit of a nut job as you can see – wonder where he gets it from! hehe! Seriously, he’s a very funny bloke, my brother Derek! Most of the time…!

– Have been doing some research for my next book, set partly in 1937, so when I was sent this by my pal Kevin Sargent, I just had to feature it! It’s a great snapshot – well, silent movie! – of London in 1927 – most fascinating of all are the landmarks you can see, and the current ones you can’t – and all in colour – who’d have thought it, in 1927!

London in 1927 from Tim Sparke on Vimeo.

– Worst Alarm Ever? This week I’ve had to resort to using a freestanding alarm to wake me up, cos my usual one’s not working. And this has got to be the worst way to wake up ever – isn’t it?! Or have you experienced one even worse? Leave me a message below to let me know!

Wayne Dyer– Facebook saying – and finally a fab facebook saying doing the rounds – and from one of my fave authors as well – Wayne Dyer can do no wrong in my book! And I love this saying. Enjoy!

FOOTNOTES – WATCH – see Ghost above. Next week – Gatsby!

QVC SNEAKY PEEK – if your mobile is forever running out of power, look out on Sunday 2nd June for a brilliant innovation – called the Halo pocket power charger – I especially like it cos it’s in leopard print! Lol!

QVC – Shhhh! Insider Secret! Revitalash fans – put Saturday 1st June in your diaries!…

Panasonic TSVQVC – COMING UP:  This weekend, apart from the previously mentioned bareMinerals 10th anni shows (4pm Fri and Sun with me – rumours of free p&p offers!), watch out on Sunday 19th for a super Panasonic smart TV Today’s Special Value – if it lasts, it’ll be on with me at 5pm.

And so look out next week for Liz Earle’s TSV on Monday and Tiana B on Thursday! Exciting week!

Then of course on Friday 24th my first novel will finally be available on Amazon! Squeeee!

Best wishes and have a great week!

Luv Debs X

    Hi Debbie
Just taken a look at the new extract frim your book. Don’t get to read as much as I would like to but now that I have retired have much more quality time to do it which is a great joy to be able to do.
Your extract is sufficient to attract my attention which as a potential reader I find this an extremely good sign. It has the makings of a good book debbie and I would definitely like to read more and I will buy the paperback when it becomes available as I don’t have a Kindle at the mo though may get one at a later date.Would like to do some writing myself at a later date so I wil find your pages hear helpful to my endeavours. Thanks for sharing this with us and good luck with the book. It does seem very good though and definitely attracts the readers attention.
