'Life's a Beach and Then...' on the beach

Birthday, holiday and paperback publication day

Birthday cards on the fireplace

This is just a very quick blog to thank those of you who sent me birthday cards – very much appreciated and looking forward to opening them when I am back at QVC next week (Ali Keenan told me that my pigeon hole at work is a little full!) I was away in Portugal with my son Dan and he treated me to dinner at a very nice restaurant in Cabanas.

Sophie came out to join us the next day followed by Chris on Sunday. We had a great time although we weren’t blessed with particularly good weather – four days of sunshine out of twelve. Mind you, it was probably for the best as I still had lots to do for the paperback publication of my novel. Finally it is out today so I can get on with writing the next one. If you’re at all tempted do have a look at the reviews.

Keep your suggestions coming in for my sixty things to do in my sixtieth year up until midnight Wednesday 24th – I will announce the three winners of my book on next week’s blog.

Have a great weekend and see you back on air next Thursday.

Much love,

Julia xx

    Hi Julie,
I did not put up anything on your last blog so did not realise it was your birthday. Happy Birthday anyway although it is late. I saw somewhere that you were 59, you certainly don’t look it.

Glad you had a good time in Portugal, shame about the weather.

Must get a copy of your Novel.

What about swimming with the Dolphins. Creating your own fitness video. Driving a Racing Car.

    Hope your Mum is better.

    Take Care.

      Hi Jean
I have got a bit behind with my blog replies – sorry!
Thanks for the compliment about not looking my age – I certainly feel it sometimes!
Some great suggestions for my 60 list. I would love to swim with dolphins – hmmm, have to think of a nice exotic location. I also like the sound of driving a racing car – I’ll let you know what makes it on to my list.
Did you get a copy of my book? We are going to be selling signed copies on the QVC website but not until August.

    An idea!
Lynton in Devon has a lovely coastal view. Walk up to the Valley of the Rocks and there you will hopefully find a bench with a tin box attached. Open it and you can write a poem to reflect your good fortune and happiness.
    good luck.
Bring the whole family to Dartmoor and go letterboxing. It really is the greatest fun. Sharpens up your map reading skills and keeps you very fit too.

      Hello Jean
What is letter boxing??? – please forgive my ignorance. If it involves a lot of walking over rough terrain I wouldn’t be able to manage it – my dodgy leg can’t cope anymore.
I’ve been to Lynton in Devon. We holidayed in Woolacombe when the children were young and drove through just as the sun was setting – gorgeous.
      Thanks for your suggestions

Well done on your book – that is a real achievement that I can appreciate, being a book lover and a try-to-be writer for many years! I downloaded the Kindle version ahead of publication so I could be sure to have it for my holidays as I have a feeling I am going to enjoy it! Wow – things to do in your year up to 60 …. I’m guessing you’ve done loads of them already! Me and my other half are not well off or given to extravagance but seeing as we had supported our kids through uni and worked hard for years we decided to splosh…..For our 50th year me and hubby did……an overnighter at the Witchery in Edinburgh ( a must!) med cruise; new york; san francisco; a helicopter ride over Manhatten (I’m afraid of heights!) then a helicopter ride over Edinburgh and the Forth – throughout the whole year! We also held a huge family barbecue and that was such fun! Writing your novel and your book launch – now that is an achievement! I have reached chapter 5 of mine – perhaps I will finish before I am 60. Now there’s a challenge!!!!! I love your shows!

      Hi Jackie
Sounds like you had a fabulous time celebrating your 50th year!
I have done one or two of your suggestions but I’ve never been in a helicopter. Maybe I’ll follow Deb Flint’s lead and have a helicopter flying lesson!
I wish you luck finishing your book – set yourself the challenge – the hardest bit is getting started and you’ve already done that.
You didn’t say when you were going on holiday but if you’ve been and you read my book I hope you enjoyed it.

    Hi Julia
Well done on your book. Thinking about things to do for your sixty years, how about doing an abseil down a building or a bridge, scary but I know you could manage it ( a wee dare for you Julia).

    Hi Julia
Happy belated birthday wishes.Thinking of your next birthday why not look back at some of the things that you have done and really enjoyed then do a collage of some of your favourites, and video them. You have then got some of the exciting things that you have done to show your future grandchildren. They would be proud to have a cool grandma.

      Hi Carol
That’s a nice idea but I have so much work stuff on DVD & video already that my grandchildren would simply get bored watching it all I think. And we are assuming that either Daniel or Sophie will eventually make me a grandma – no sign from either of them yet!
Thanks for the suggestion and the birthday wishes

Ah, things to do before you are 60, mmm, well I think you have probably achieved a lot of them, as someone else said, as I am rather quickly heading towards the next ‘0’ sometime ago I made a beautiful ‘wish box’ and in there are many cuttings and a list of things I believed I need to do/acquire etc before I go on… and I tick off as I go, a bit like cosmic ordering probably. Not everything turns up exactly as you think but it does turn up. Do things that excite, take your breath away, enrich the soul. You are Gemini? you will know what I mean. Mostly, enjoy what you do. Birthday greetings from one air sign to another.

      Hi Elaine
I like the idea of a wish box and funnily enough Alison Keenan bought me a little notebook for my birthday entitled ‘Dreams and Wishes’ so clearly she was on the same wavelength as you.
I am though trying to make this more of a one year list rather than my ultimate bucket list – that makes me feel too old!
Thanks for the birthday wishes fellow air sign

Happy birthday Julia! Why not try to visit some of the Seven Wonders of the World. I visited Mexico recently and went to Chichen Itza which was amazing!

      Hi Hannah
Thanks for the birthday wishes – can’t believe it was a month ago today …. it’s actually better weather here in the UK than it was in Portugal in June.
I’ll have to investigate & see if I can manage any of the seven wonders of the world – thanks for the suggestion

    Hi Julia
I downloaded the Kindle version of your novel and have just finished it. I really enjoyed it and what a nice story, cannot wait for the next one. Well done, I have also read and also enjoyed very much “One hundred lengths of the pool”. Keep writing.
I love watching you and Simon Wilson together.

      Hi Judith
I am so pleased to hear that you have enjoyed reading both my books. Would you maybe be able to do me a review on Amazon – apparently that encourages other people to at least open up the first few chapters for free … Only if you have time of course.
I’ve managed about 5000 words on the sequel to Life’s a Beach and Then… So far this week so it’s coming on.
I’m looking forward to Simon’s anniversary shows in August

    Hi Julia,
Hope you had a good holiday. You’ve done a lot in your life and faced challenges with positivity and strength (as you say-“what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”)I’ve already passed the 60 milestone and find it hard to believe I’m an O.A.P.!
You love going on your holidays, how about learning to fly a plane? Then maybe you could fly yourself to one of your favourite destinations or just add this to one of your achievements.
Good luck with your book launch.I’m looking forward to reading your book.

    Take care,
    Best wishes

      Hi Sharon
Are you technically an OAP? Haven’t they raised the retirement age? I think my children will be in their seventies before they can retire!
It’s a toss-up between having a flying lesson in a plane or a helicopter – one of them will definitely make my 60 list.
The book launch party was really enjoyable – have you ordered it yet or maybe even started reading it? – I’m a bit behind with my replies! Do let me know what you think.
