Birthday celebrations, beauty offers galore and so much more

12

For just over two months of each year Colin is three years younger than me, but when we hit his birthday on the 30th May it reverts to two years! My grandmother Daisy Maud Timms was older than her husband George by a couple of years too, and they were together forever! We actually managed to stretch Colin’s celebrations this year when my sister and Linda came over on the Sunday before his birthday.

We were lucky with the weather and had a very competitive game of quoits, followed by several rounds of boules. If nothing else it was a real laugh! I found this photo of the two of us when were at junior school… and I’m still laughing!

We’d arranged to meet up with most of Colin’s children on the evening of the 30th, and Honey came for a sleepover this Friday! So all in all, not such a bad deal being 57 ☺. Of course there had to be a cake, and unlike the other members of our family, Colin’s favourite is actually a Genoa fruit cake. I’ve made one for him a couple of times, but it’s not always turned out that well, and so this time I tinkered around a little with the recipe and added in dried figs and some pine nuts. Luckily it worked, and Colin motored his way through it so quickly I didn’t get a chance to take a photograph! Thanks to you for highlighting your family birthdays in your lovely comments, and for keeping me up to date with your holidays and various trips and events. We all seem to lead such busy lives don’t we?

I’m trying to get to see my mum and Joe a little more often these days so that I can help in the garden and around the house now that they’re both less mobile. Jenny does the lion’s share as she lives far closer than me, but it’s good to be able to take some of the pressure off. As Lucy was on half term, and mum had asked to see her, she arranged to drive there with Honey so we could all meet up. It’s been a few months since we’d all been together and mum was very impressed with how articulate and grown-up Honey is. After playing several fairly competitive rounds of ‘Little Lamb Lotto’, Honey and Grandad headed out into the garden and came back with some tiny frogs and a few tadpoles. I took this picture for Honey to keep, and luckily I remembered to get a photo of all of us together. Four generations!

Somewhere I have a photo of me, with my mum, Nanny Timms and Lucy as a toddler… I must try and dig it out for the blog. I think it’s important that we make these lasting memories while we’re still able to, and I was very touched when Honey asked me about my dad, who died 32 years ago on the 27th May. I showed her a photo of him and she told me that I looked like him, except “he is a man nanny!”. 🙂

On 16th May my friend Jo and I enjoyed a cracking night out when we went to see ‘Strictly Come Dancing The Professionals’ at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith. You might remember me mentioning it earlier on in the year, as it was my Christmas present from my children, and although originally Colin was planning to come with me, he felt Jo would have a better time, and he was right! We both love the TV series, and so it was an absolute treat watching the oh-so-familiar professionals dance their socks off. The orchestra and vocalists were amazing too, and the only disappointment was when we were told that Pasha wouldn’t be returning for any more of the Strictly TV series ☹. Such a shame, although I’m sure it won’t affect the BBC’s viewing figures!

Talking of which I am thoroughly enjoying Gentleman Jack, Sally Wainwright’s latest masterpiece built around the true-life diaries of Yorkshire businesswoman Anne Lister. Sally is an absolute master at drawing real-life characters, and Happy Valley with Sarah Lancashire will remain my all-time favourite drama. I was also delighted to learn that her Last Tango in Halifax will return next year for a special four part series – something else to look forward to.

I’m sure by now you will have heard about our June Beauty Event, because it began on the 1st of the month and will run right the way through until the 30th June. There’s never been a better time to shop because WHATEVER you buy from our entire range of beauty products, you’ll only pay £1.95 P&P!

I’m so glad we’ve decided to do this now, as with summer most definitely here, I find I’m using far more sun protection, moisturiser, faux tan and skin firming products than normal, as there’s more of me on show. Keep in touch with me on Twitter and Instagram as there’ll be daily updates, but I’d also suggest you visit our beauty department as those virtual shelves are being re-stocked on a regular basis and I wouldn’t want you to miss out on anything!

I’m often asked what kind of beauty routine I have, and to be honest it changes with the seasons, but I thought I should share with you my current five ‘beauty must -haves’ that I feel have definitely helped my skin look healthier and firmer.

1) Gatineau Tan Accelerator
This was a real boost to my skin when I had my first taste of the sunshine in March during my holiday to Mexico. Not only did it help me to tan without burning, but it maintained my colour.

2) Decleor Gradual Glow
You’ve probably heard me raving about this on air. It is my constant tan top up, and never lets me down. It matches my skin tone perfectly and moisturises it too. My top tip would be to use an exfoliating mitt every other day when you shower or bathe and apply the Gradual Glow on those days, and ALWAYS wash your hands afterwards.

3) Perricone Cold Plasma Plus+ Fragile Skin Therapy
Yes, this was a new one to me too, but it really has made quite a remarkable difference to the slackened and crinkled skin at the top of my arms! I use it every day after I shower and after my Gradual Glow. It reduces that awful crepey look that seems to appear when you reach the age of 50 and it does it pretty much instantly! It’s imperative if I want to wear a sleeveless dress while I’m on air, so do try it and let me know what you think.

4) Sarah Chapman’s Overnight Facial
If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram you’ll have seen the little film I made about this. I’ve been using it on and off for about six years, twice a week, and it contains peptides, vitamins, omega oils and essential oils. It really does ‘feed’ the skin overnight and I feel it’s reduced the appearance of the fine lines on my face.

5) Elemis’s NEW Peptide 4 Plumping Pillow Facial
I use this every night and it’s basically a hydrating sleep mask that works well on tired and dry skin. When I say basic, there’s nothing basic about the formula that creates an invisible film to prevent overnight water loss – ingenious! And it smells gorgeous too – wild Indian night jasmine. ☺

So that’s my top five – how about telling me what yours are? I love it when we can compare notes and help each other out. Just jot them down below the blog, and I’ll get back to you. In fact if you want to let me know via Instagram or Twitter just #myqvcfind and that would work too! Might as well make the best of our reduced P&P while it’s there!

And at the risk of overloading you with information, I did want to give you a heads up on an enormous fashion event we’re featuring this Friday and Saturday (7th and 8th June). The P&P on both those days will be just £1.95 on EVERYTHING, and you can get that reduction now if you buy online and will run until the 14th June.

All your favourites like MarlaWynne Layers’ elegant sleeveless midi dress with side seam pockets; Live Unlimited London have a bold and bright spot pleated skirt; FitFlop feature the IQushion sparkle flip flop and I’m delighted to tell you that the high street brand Monsoon has literally just arrived at QVC! I’ve already ordered the Mila button cami top in the brown, but they have skirts, crop trousers and plenty of dresses for you to choose from too. Just have a look through the range so you can order ahead of the event this weekend.

I’ll be back with you on Wednesday for an hour at 6pm with the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer, and at 7pm I’m joined by the charming British designer Amanda Wakeley. So if you’re looking for a bag to accessorise your outfit, there will be plenty of choice.

I’m taking a week off but will be back on Saturday 15th June at 9pm with some incredible diamond jewellery and there’s 50% off all prices! Keep in touch with me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and I’ll let you know what we have ahead of the show.

Enjoy the sunshine and as always, I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

With my love,

Ali

Good Afternoon Ali, It’s so dark I really should switch on the lamps & so cold i really should add another layer – Flaming June & not like it was last year… Moan over & as someone who avoids having her photo taken & doesn’t bother with her birthday i love looking at other people’s shots & reading about their celebrations. The four generation photo is lovely but it’s the one of you in uniform that I loved the most – what a gorgeous smile. Your dad was a handsome chap & both you & Sam look like him, minus the moustache of course. Looking after Etty means I’m back in the school holiday routine so I had a huge to do list for last week & I’m delighted to say that everything got ticked off, including taking all our ‘no longer needed’ bedding to the dogs home. I lugged it in while Colin stayed in the car so he wouldn’t be tempted by any of the residents, I’m not made of sterner stuff but couldn’t upset our nervous Sox by bringing home any more animals so I handed over the bags, gave them a donation & fled. It seems amazing that it’s been a fortnight since we went to Chelsea, it was the best one I’ve been to, the hotel & Italian restaurant in Victoria/Pimlico were fantastic, the weather was perfect, the show was sublime & talking to Chris Beardshaw rounded off a wonderful day. Enjoy your week off & I hope the sun returns for you… Love from Jo x

Dear Jo, I have to admit before we were spoilt with the sunshine abroad, I was exactly the same! We even had the log burner lit the week before last! I’m sorry you don’t bother with your birthday – I hope your family still make a fuss of you though 🙂 How lovely that you managed to get the best of the weather for the CFS. It makes all the difference being able to see the gardens in the sunshine I think. Glad you liked the family photo. I’m so pleased I took it and there’s definitely the family resemblance. I must get an up to date photo of my Sam as he is now sporting a REALLY hairy beard! It suits him though 🙂 Well done for not succumbing to another pet… I think you’re right about Sox – although Lucy now has two chihuahuas – although Bentley the new one is a cross. I’ll put a photo up in the next blog! Colin and I took a last minute trip to Portugal as our friends had a spare room in an apartment and we had wall to wall sunshine. Felt so lucky! I do hope it perks up for everyone here now though. Thanks for keeping in touch, love Ali xx

Hi Alison oh looked lovely in Portugal more than can be said from here can’t believe this time last year it was hot we had family down to celebrate our 40 years and it was really warm well they say it’s going to improve. You are the spitting image of your dad and sister peas in a pod. Lucky you seeing strictly we really must try and book up a show Gary and Lamis spent a few days in London recently they saw the greatest showman and loved it, everywhere was really busy that week because Mr trump was in town so lots of activity around. All is still good with Clare so that’s good news and I’m helping her as much as possible. Lovely your seeing your mum a bit more does she live far from you? Dear Viv, as always lovely to hear from you, and I very much hope that your nieces communion went well? I’m sure that the rain has helped your tubs and the plants are blooming but I know the endlessness of it brings you down. We were lucky and we got a last minute trip to Portugal and it was absolutely beautiful out there, although I’m looking out of the window at the rain pouring now! So glad you enjoyed the blog and the photos, definitely more to come next week. Thanks for keeping in touch, love Ali xx

Dear Christine, thanks so much for writing to me, and I’m glad that you too have good memories and lots of family to remember. I think it is particularly special when you are named after someone in the family. I named my son Jack after my grandfather, and my son Sam’s middle name is James after my dad. Take care and love to you, Ali xx

    Hi Ali,
I echo Antoinette, you have a beautiful family. You’re a lucky lady. You’ll never be lonely! Did you watch any of the programmes on social care on bbc? Very sad and I’m glad they highlighted loneliness and caring too.
Anyway I hope Colin had a great birthday!x

Dear Susan, thank you so much for your kind words. It is good to see as much of the family as possible – more so now as mum and Joe are less able, so it’s good to give a little back. I didn’t see the programmes on the BBC, but I do remember when both my father’s parents were in a home… we were lucky, but I know that they are not all that well run, and it can be hard for some folk. Colin had a lovely birthday thank you, and we had a nice break in the sunshine to celebrate last week. Love Ali xx
