Funnily enough, I used to write a piece for the Croydon Advertiser and then the Palace Matchday Programme with this title, but the bird’s eye view I’m referring to today is the one we had on Saturday of the Farnborough Air Show from the back garden of my daughter’s house.
Unfortunately, it was a little cloudy, although still very warm, but it certainly didn’t spoil our enjoyment of the day. At times it felt like the display had been put on just for us, but instead of battling the crowds, we were in our private little viewing area with very tasty food and a couple of glasses of Pimms to hand. It was a lovely afternoon meeting Reece’s family and also catching up with one of Sophie’s old school friends, Nicki. I even had a go at putting the shot, something I haven’t done since I was about fourteen. It was much heavier than I remember and, as you can imagine, I was pretty hopeless at it!
I hope you enjoyed Christmas in July, if you tuned in. I think I’m going to buy the Atari games console – I had such fun playing the retro games on air and I think Reece’s children, Amber and Taylor, would have a lot of fun with it as well as us adults. It didn’t feel very Christmassy with the sweltering temperatures outside, but it’s a good idea to get a head start on things – that said, I had a tweet from one lady saying she was buying the final few things for her Christmas! Really? How I wish I was that organised.
So, this week’s look back over the twenty-five years of QVC UK takes us back to 2008/09. Following a vote during the celebrations of QVC’s 15th birthday you, the viewers asked to see a tap dance performed by Catherine, Claire and me. To be honest, I’m not sure why Jill and Jilly weren’t involved in this, as both were excellent ‘tappers’, having performed in 42nd Street in London’s West End. Tap was my least favourite dancing discipline, but I relied on my mantra of eyes and teeth, as I had done throughout my dancing career, to distract folk from looking at my feet.
I’d also had a 15th Anniversary show in early October. All the presenters used to have one when they reached landmark anniversaries (5th, 10th, 15th etc.) but we don’t do that any more with presenters, only brands. There have been some big anniversaries lately with brands like Decleor, Elemis, Gatineau, OPI and SBC, celebrating over twenty years with us, and the Butler & Wilson 23rd anniversary show’s coming up next month. But I thought you may find it interesting to see some of the brands we were selling alongside them ten years ago.
In the beauty department we had Smashbox, Models Prefer (later changed to YBF), Ojon, Richard Ward and Leighton Denny, amongst many others.
Jewellery brands you may remember were: Viva Las Vegas Gems, South Western Silver, Suarti, Chateau D’Argent, Lee Sands and Russian Diopside.
In the fashion department we had Markon (I used to love their boots), Spanx, Birkenstock (I used to love their sandals), Cashmasoft, Kathy Van Zeeland handbags, Indigo Moon, Dreamkeeper and Beth Terrell.
I found this photo of Glen Campbell and myself hosting a viewer Fashion Event in the atrium of Marco Polo House, where our studios used to be. I don’t remember all the brands that featured that day, but Kim & Co was definitely there and also Butler & Wilson and, I think, Michele Hope. The goody bags at that event contained the pink disposable cameras that you see all the ladies holding in this picture – it was a little unnerving having them all pointed at us at once. I wonder if any of you recognise yourself?
Briefly back to 2009 though, off-air, we had a rounders match in Battersea Park opposite our old studios, to raise money for charity. Just like putting the shot, I hadn’t done it for years but I was game to have a go. I think it was only myself and Catherine Huntley from the presenter team (I’m sure the others will correct me if I’ve mis-remembered). It was great fun, but I’m pretty sure I was caught out on my first strike – maybe I should have played safe, but that’s not who I am!
The other big event that happened in September 2009 was Debbie Flint rejoining QVC – is it really nine years since she came back to us? Oh, how time flies!
Well, it’s been another full-on week of building work at home. The RSJ, which replaces the wall that has been knocked down, is now in place, as are the lintels above a new window and a widened door opening. We are now starting to get a sense of what the space will be like, but it is still an absolute mess at the moment – more pics on here next week. We currently have no way of cooking so thank goodness it’s summer and we can have barbecues, salads and takeaways enjoyed al fresco. I took this photo last night after being on-air with Alison Cork and the beautiful silver TSV lanterns. I was banned from buying them by ‘my fiance’ as I already have four copper ones. How pretty do they look with candles flickering away inside – it really set the mood.
Normally this is my weekend off, but I will be in on Sunday for the Amazon Echo TSV at 11am followed by two hours of gardening. Before that, though, we have a great TSV from Liz Earle on Saturday. It has all your essentials in either full size or supersize.
Cleanse & Polish in Original and also in Rose & Lavender, Instant Boost Skin Tonic (still my favourite tonic of all the brands we do), Skin Repair (which is where your choice comes in), Eyebright and Orange Flower Botanical Body Wash. All of this is for under £40 and it’s already available if you like to get in early. I do believe there is quite an exciting auto delivery option too though, swapping out the body wash for a brand new product! It would be a different item number so you may want to check that out.
Well, just before I finish, I have a little apology to make regarding my competition winners. I had been deliberating between Sweet Pea and Tumble as the name I liked best for Bear A. In the end, I chose Sweet Pea, but I put the wrong name aside it. So, to clarify, Jill Turner was the winner of Bear A. Fortunately, I do have another Bear A for Amanda Porter and we’ll be able to source another Merchant of Venice fragrance so as not to disappoint. I blame the heat!!
Have a great weekend and heed the warnings to stay out of the midday sun, even with your Ultrasun on,
