A big weekend ahead

It’s always a big weekend on QVC, but this is a biggie personally for me, as it is my Mum’s 91st birthday on Sunday.

This time last year, we were secretly organising a family get-together, with most of the Scottish contingent of our family. Even my brother-in-law, Geoff, who is quite disabled with Parkinson’s, joined us at my brother’s house for a party. My Mum’s face was a picture!

She loves the Bernini fountain, pictured above, which was our present to her. She loves it almost as much as I love the Together top I am wearing in the picture. It seems you guys love the top too, as I am always being asked for the item number.

I hope Jenny stays true to her word and brings it in a new colour soon.

The celebrations this year are more low key – we are driving up to Nottingham and my brother has booked a restaurant for Sunday lunch. Can’t quite believe my mum will be NINETY-ONE! Incredible.

So, as well as Mum’s birthday, it is also the start of the new football season. My team, Crystal Palace, are at home to Premiership new boys, Huddersfield. It will be the first league game under our new manager Frank de Boer, following the departure of Sam Allardyce at the end of last season.

He has already made a few signings, and I should imagine there may be a couple more as he puts his squad together to face the challenges ahead. I’m not actually going to the game, but I’ll be keeping an ear on it while wielding a paintbrush.

We are working on the attic of our house at the moment – I say ‘we’, but it’s mostly been Chris and our son doing the grafting, I just come up with the ideas.

Although my writing room was finished before Christmas, I thought it would be a good idea to have an extra loo on the top floor, along with a space to have my desk… a kind of home office. It’s ‘tight’ but, with meticulous planning, it is going to work – I hope!

Wilfie, the cat, has been helping too. He keeps disappearing and then reappearing several hours later, covered in building dust (and thoughtfully rubbing it against our legs).

Wilfie seems to be acquiring his own fan club on Instagram now with all the pictures of him I post on there. If you’d like to follow me, I’m juliagroberts.

I mentioned on last week’s blog that I would tell you a bit more about the necklace I was wearing in the selfie. It’s part of the Newbridge Silverware collection, an Irish company who started off back in the 1920s making cutlery and have since moved in to other luxury items including jewellery.

I have been wearing several pieces over the past week or so to highlight the first one hour show coming up next Thursday at 2pm, with yours truly. I particularly love this heart bangle.

It’s in two separate pieces (one silver-plated and the other rose gold-plated) which form a heart when they fall into place. I think you’ll see a few more pieces on the other girls over the next few days so keep your eyes peeled, and do join us for the show to find out more about the brand.

I hope you are enjoying August Fashion Month so far, there’s lots more still to come and do remember there you can see more fashion live on our Style channel every weekday. Tune in at 4pm for our Look of the Week feature, that I always give you a sneak peak of…

I’m going to have to dash, as I am writing this between shows on Friday afternoon and I wouldn’t want to be late for my 4pm date with Simon Wilson.

We haven’t worked together for ages, so it will be good to catch up. Today’s show is Butler & Wilson World, with some great clothes, bags and a bit of jewellery too. We’re also together for two of his 22nd anniversary shows next weekend – more on next week’s blog with some of my favourite picks from the shows.

I hope the weather stays fine for whatever you have planned for this weekend,

Much love,

Julia xx

It is wonderful that you can enjoy such a special birthday with your mum. I lost my mum many years ago. I still miss her. I hope you have a wonderful day with your family.

      Hi Catherine
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go to Nottingham for Mum’s birthday as I have been unwell and Sunday was a real low point. Sorry to hear you no longer have your mum – exactly why we have to make the most of them while we have them

Happy birthday, Julia’s mum! Hope you have a fantastic day today with your lovely family. Julia may seem a little bit down in the dumps but you’re her mum so you’ll know that’s the effect football can have! Julia…you can’t begrudge a little newbie team a good start, can you? Really?! Easy for me to say…nufc don’t play until later today! Best wishes, SheMag

      Hi Shemag
I’m presuming your smile has slipped a bit after your opening match back in the premiership.
It wasn’t nice to lose 3-0 to Huddersfield but I think Palace will come good when they understand what the new coach is asking them to do. Couldn’t visit Mum in the end as I wasn’t well

      Hi Antoinette
Thanks for the birthday wishes for my mum – she had a nice day with my brother and his family. I don’t know about 50, but certainly very youthful looking for 91!

Hi Julia, a very happy belated Birthday to your lovely Mum, she looks amazing. Would never have guessed that she is 91. Apologies for saying ‘she’, but I don’t know her name. Mum looks absolutely amazing though and we now know where you get your lovely looks and hair from, it’s obviously in the genes. Hope you all had a wonderful day together and wishing you both many, many more Birthdays to come.

Hope you are keeping well Julia xx

      Hello Gail,
My mum’s name is Josephine (Josie) – I borrowed her name for the main character in my Time for a Short Story.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to go and see her on her birthday – I will go when I finally get rid of this tummy bug which is still lingering ?
Thank you for your kind compliments for us both

Hi Julia, I hope you had lovely day celebrating your mums birthday. You wouldn’t think she was 91 and looks a very elegant lady.
Hope the attic is coming along nicely. Thanks to a little windfall we will be starting a few home improvements in October. They really need doing but not looking forward to the upheaval.
I like the style of that Newbridge jewellery so I’ll keep an eye out for that.
    Love Denise. x

      Hello Denise
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to be with Mum on her birthday as I wasn’t well but will visit when I finally shake of my tummy bug.
The attic is progressing well – the loo and hand basin are now plumbed in, lots of painting done and carpets ordered. I’ll put some pics on the blog when it’s finished.
Hope your home improvements go well – you’re right it is a massive upheaval, but worth it in the end.

      Hi Elizabeth
Thanks for your good wishes for Mum – she is a very elegant lady, years of being a dancing teacher have given her wonderful posture.
I’m still not quite ‘right’ with a lingering tummy bug but improving
