Well with Mother’s Day fast approaching I’d thought it would be worth celebrating mother’s everywhere, including those who have filled that motherly role in some way. I also have a great Mother’s Day competition for you with an opportunity to win some heavenly, delicious Hotel Chocolat treats and a host of pampering goodies, but more on that later!
The history of Mother’s Day dates back to the Ancient Greeks who enjoyed a spring festival that worshipped maternal goddesses, and the Romans glorified in Hilaria, an event that celebrated their maternal goddess Cybele. In the US Mother’s Day is always the second Sunday in May, so falls on the 12th this year and was founded by Anna Jarvis in memory of her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis, a political peace activist, and was designed to honour all mothers all over the world. Here in the UK our Mother’s Day is linked to Easter and the lunar calendar so falls on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent.
I really don’t think that a Mother’s Day gift has to be extravagant in any way, it’s just the thought and sentiment that’s meaningful. I can remember when my son Taylor, who was probably about six at the time, asked me to close my eyes because he had a present for me as it was Mother’s Day. We were in the park and I opened my eyes to a handful of grass that he handed me, saying that he picked it ‘special’ and it’s funny that that’s the Mother’s Day present I remember most.
However if you are a little older maybe and feel like splashing out on Mum this Mother’s Day, take a look at the stunning gifts in our Mother’s Day special collection.
