Behind the scenes of a promo video

Boxes in the hallHi all!

Thought I’d share some “behind the scenes” pictures with you this week, from a day we spent filming at my house in Gloucestershire. We were making what we call a “promo” – a little advert, which will be running on QVC to promote our new interiors show “At Home with Jackie”.

The finished item will only be about 30 seconds long but to produce something of that length that looks really good, takes a full day of filming. So it was an early start for the crew that day, as they packed the van and hit the M4 to make the two hour trip.

ConservatoryNot so early for me – what a treat to be working from home! All I had to do was run round with the vacuum cleaner and duster and make sure the biscuit cupboard was well stocked (little known fact – a TV crew cannot physically function without tea and biscuits)!

Once they arrived, the van was swiftly unpacked and my hallway quickly began to resemble one belonging to somebody about to move house (pictured top).

I’ve filmed in my house many times, particularly during my GMTV days, but I’d sort of forgotten how much kit is involved – SO MANY BOXES! The first scene was in the conservatory, which involved rearranging the furniture completely – what works in real life doesn’t always work on TV! (pictured above left)

Then we shot some stuff in the kitchen – as you can see, it was more than a little chaotic (pictured below left). And here’s a little telly secret for you. One of the shots involved a delicious Victoria sponge, which I was supposed to have whipped up in a KitchenAid mixer.

Kitchen chaos Naughty cake

To save time (and also, because I am the worst cook in the world and would have no clue how to make a cake), the crew picked up a supermarket cake on the way. We bashed it up a little bit and, hey presto, a homemade cake. (pictured above right) And yes, as soon as the shot was done, we ate it. And yes, it was delicious.

Lounge shotSome filming in the bedroom and lounge (pictured left) followed. In the lounge scene the producer got me to tap away randomly on my iPad while they filmed the shots, and I “accidentally” managed to buy a pair of Carole Hochman pyjamas. Whoops…!

All in all it was a very fun day and you should see the finished product on your screens soon in the run-up to the next show. If you missed the first one, the next edition is currently scheduled for the 21st of October, and I’ll tell you more about that as I get it.

Have a brilliant week, and do get in touch either by leaving a comment below this blog or by following me on Twitter (@jackiekabler).

    Hi Jackie,
Wow certainly a lot of boxes etc needed for the filming, I hope it is all back to normal now. Looking forward to seeing it on QVC.
You should have kept quite about the sponge, no one would have known. If you were to use the Kitchen Aid you would want to cook all the time. I purchased one from QVC a few months ago, I love it, then I love cooking, have to make time as I work fulltime in our business and I have 11 dogs and two cats to look after. (And a husband, the animals are far less trouble and more organised).
You mentioned Carol Hochman, they are super arent they, lovely and warm and so fashionable, not that I have time too lounge around in mine in the mornings, the animals see to that, grab a bite to eat, (well cereal maybe) and then on the Computer and hey presto another day, week gone.
Take care and have a great weekend.

    Hi Jean
ELEVEN dogs! Wow, you are a busy lady! Glad you find time to bake though, I am rubbish at it but one of these days I must try to master the art. Yes I really like Carole Hochman PJs, I have three pairs so far!
Good to hear from you, have a great week.

    Hi Irene
Yes very different from GMTV, and from ITV and BBC news where I worked after I left breakfast telly! I’m loving it though, every day is different and the people I work with are so nice and such good fun. It’s also quite nice to be facing my first winter at QVC and knowing I’ll be spending most of my time in a nice warm studio and not out in the cold as I was every day as a news reporter!
    Thanks for chatting!

    Hi Linda,
Yes I’m a huge Yankee fan now, never really liked candles before but they are fabulous! I spend far too much money working at QVC, bad for the bank balance!
