Beauty school: lip treatments

The lip area can be a concern for all ages, and whether you’re interested in combating dryness, ageing or simply want to keep your lips plump-looking and hydrated, scientific developments have led to a whole range of lip-boosting breakthroughs. These innovations offer optimum results, textures and application methods, which will suit the whole family – or simply treat and improve your specific lip concern.

QVC Lip Treatment Favourites

Some of the top-selling lip treatments at QVC UK are Ultrasun’s Sun Protection Lip SPF30, the Gale Hayman Lip Lift and Gatineau’s DefiLIFT 3D Perfect Design Revolumising Lipcare.

The Ultrasun Lip SPF30 is perfect for men, women and the entire family, and is essential for skin health and safety, due to the high SPF. It’s non-greasy, shine-free, and doesn’t melt in hot weather or pockets. It can be used on its own, or if you are using any anti-ageing or plumping products, can be used throughout the day to safeguard against future ageing – especially above the upper lip.

Gale Hayman’s Lip Lift has been stocked at QVC UK for over 20 years, and the success is due to an easy-to-use lip balm that doesn’t melt or change texture in different temperatures, and an anti-ageing formula that is packed with vitamin E, collagen and a clinically proven Maxilift complex. When applied several times a day, Lip Lift has been proven to plump up the look of your lips. Incidentally, some of the Gale Hayman and Doll 10 lipsticks also contain this Maxilift technology.

For those of you that wish to combine a high-gloss finish with anti-ageing benefits, the Gatineau DefiLIFT 3D Perfect Design Revolumising Lipcare creates a shiny coat on the lips, and has an added serum built in. During the day you can apply this simply to the lip area, and at night, smooth over the area around your lips to help keep it looking youthful.

Beauty Industry Launches

We have some exciting lip serums launching at QVC UK, such as Fillerina’s Lip Volume Roll-On (coming soon), which is a treatment enriched with six hyaluronic acids and an easy-to-use roller-ball applicator. This works best on a completely bare lip, and can be applied on the skin around the mouth as a skincare product. I recommend applying one of the many balms, treatments or conditioning lipsticks that we have available from Tarte and Bare Minerals on top of the treatment, in order to seal in the hyaluronic acid present in the Fillerina product.

A really clever anti-ageing product that also offers a natural-looking lip tint is the new Sarah Chapman Lip Enhancer Power Base & Tint Balm. It contains a peptide-rich balm at one end, which you can massage in as a skincare treat in the morning and evening, plus a self-tinting and plumping gloss on the other.

High-Impact Lip Colour

For those of you who require opaque, bold or waterproof colour, then I suggest you have a look at Doll 10 and It Cosmetics, who each offer waterproof lip products. They also stock stains that transform into a different colour on the lip, in comparison to the colour in the tube or bullet.

If you’re looking for long-wear colour, then try one of the multi-purpose Benefit Tinted Lip and Cheek Stains.  They retain their colour when you apply a balm or gloss on top. Another option is to use a waterproof lip liner to fill in the whole lip, and then apply your hydrating treatment on top. Laura Geller and It Cosmetics have recently launched some lovely ones.

The Lip Area and Tackling Ageing

At some point, the lip area becomes an ageing concern zone for all of us. It is second in amount of movement per minute a day to your eye blinking, and so ages a lot quicker than other parts of our faces. It also shares a similar muscle structure to the circular shape of the eye, and there are different skin structures which can cause this problem.

The skin above the top lip catches the sun easily, and can be a key area for ageing and slackening. It joins into the thinner flesh of the epithelial lining tissue of the lip, which then continues on into the gums. This can lead to skin sensitivity around the lip, and dehydration on the lips themselves. It’s also important to remember that the lips do not have any oil glands, and so cannot keep them supple and moisturised.

This is why face moisturiser doesn’t work on the lips. Lip treatments and balms are specially designed to sink into this different type of skin tissue, although if you want to get started on anti-ageing and you don’t currently own a lip contour product, you can use your eye cream or serum.

If you really want to reduce the appearance of ageing skin around your lips, exfoliation can achieve quick results and allow your new products to sink in more easily. Gale Hayman offers a fabulous exfoliator that comes in a compact lipstick bullet, which when used regularly can counteract dryness and enhance the plumping effect of Lip Lift and other lip volumising products.
