For those of you who regularly tune in to Fashion on Friday, I’m afraid I won’t be there today as I am battling the lurgy. I was feeling a little under the weather on-air on Tuesday, but after a completely sleepless night I had to give in to my body on Wednesday and go to bed with paracetamol and warm drinks for company – not bedfellows I would necessarily recommend! I’m feeling a bit better today but unfortunately I can’t complete a sentence without coughing. Hopefully I will be back to full health on Thursday when I’m next due in.
This time last week, I was as right as rain on-air before driving up to Nottingham after my shift in preparation for the Rotary International Conference, at which I was hosting the Saturday afternoon session, ‘Polio – Nearly There.’ It was a privilege to be asked to do this and to share the stage with fellow Polio survivors – each of us with a story to tell about our own experience of this devastating disease.
It is almost confined to the history books but the key word there is ‘almost’. There have been some cases this year in Pakistan and Afghanistan despite the extensive vaccination programme, in part funded by Rotary International. You may think that those countries are a long way away and that it doesn’t affect us in this country, but all it would take is for one person who is carrying the disease to travel to the UK and come into contact with people who aren’t up to date with their vaccination and this once killer disease could rear its ugly head in this country again. Rotary have done an amazing job so far and I’m committed to help them finish it.
You probably recognise Ade Adepitan, who was one of the speakers, pictured here with me and my son, Dan, who kindly accompanied me to the event. He is currently working with a company who are dedicated to improving the lives of people with dementia – very relevant to mention as this has been ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’.
Dementia is often associated with the elderly, although that’s not always the case, and I feel very fortunate that my ninety-two year old mum still has all her faculties. As the conference was in Nottingham, my home town, Dan decided we should take her out for dinner before we drove back on Saturday evening. We were about to tuck in when my niece, Sam, appeared out of nowhere. There are quite a few pubs in the area surrounding Nottingham so it was quite random that she should be in the same one at the same time! Sam is a paramedic, so she and Dan had a good old chat about treating dementia while Mum and I had a natter about QVC!
Fortunately, I had met my deadline on the second book in the detective thriller series I am writing before I was struck down with the lurgy. I’ve decided to have a two-week break from my writing desk… until the first round of edits arrive! I also realised that tomorrow will be four years to the day since the Kindle version of my first novel, ‘Life’s a Beach and Then…’ was published. Is it really only four years since I became a published novelist? And in that time I’ve written six full-length novels and several shorter books too. I think I may be a workaholic! Check out my Facebook page, Julia Roberts TV, if you’re interested in an anniversary treat.
Speaking of treats, we have some fabulous ones in our Get Gorgeous two day event. You’ve probably already seen the Ben de Lisi TSV today, but did you know that the Benefit trio of mascaras, the TSV tomorrow, is already on pre-order? You get one each of They’re Real, Bad Gal Bang and Rollerlash, in full sizes, for £31.92 instead of £66 direct from Benefit. I’ve tried all three of these mascaras (currently using Rollerlash) and I like them all for different effects – I would highly recommend if you haven’t tried them previously. And if you have, you can set up the Auto Delivery option to reserve the price for two further shipments! Win, win, I’d say.
There are also some other great beauty offers and here are two that I particularly like: the first is from Elemis and is a 30 ml size of day and night cream for £66.96, in your choice of Original, SPF 30, Dynamic Resurfacing or, my preferred choice, Pro Definition.
Also, check out this trio of Alguaromes Bath and Shower Gel from Decleor, infused with lemon and lavender essential oils and seaweed extract, in the 400ml supersize, for just £34.48… now that is a bargain.
Get Gorgeous is not all about beauty – there is jewellery and also fashion, including this maxi dress from Nina Leonard. £31.96 for a maxi dress – you’d struggle to get a top in most brands for that price.
Hopefully by next Thursday when I am next scheduled to be in at QVC, I will have got rid of the lurgy. My first hour is Kipling, which leads me nicely in to mentioning that Marie Francoise, our regular Kipling guest, had her baby last Sunday, a little girl named Mia Fleur Laelia. Check out the photos of this little beauty on her Instagram page: @mariefrancoisewolff. As I’m having a break from my writing desk, maybe I should get the knitting needles or crochet hook out!
Have a lovely weekend, whatever you are up to,
