Liz Earle and Julia

Back to my day job!

It was good to be back on QVC yesterday after a three-week break although, in some respects, ‘break’ doesn’t seem to be the correct choice of word! It really has been a very busy time culminating in my book-launch party on Wednesday evening.

It was lovely to see so many friends there to support my latest venture. The venue was a beautiful Italian restaurant in Chiswick called Villa Di Geggiano where we filmed the piece for Chiswick Buzz with Lorna Ko. The restaurant owner, Gordon, very kindly offered to host the party for me and the ultimate seal of approval came from Simon Wilson who texted me to say what a beautiful restaurant it was – praise indeed from the creator of Butler & Wilson.

It was a lovely mix of people including Simon and Liz Earle, but also friends from the world of football, former Crystal Palace player, John Salako, and Palace Publicity Manager,Terry Byfield. I also invited Gareth Southgate and here was his reply: ‘Hi Julia, No offence but I hope not – Final is on June 30th x’

My head has been in such a spin I had totally forgotten that the U21 European Championships were taking place and Gareth is the England manager! Sadly they didn’t make the final as they lost on Wednesday night to Italy.

I was also really pleased that my former roomie from QVC, Anna Cookson, was able to make it with her boyfriend, Ed Davey. He is a novelist, I’m going to his book launch ‘do’ next Thursday, and another novelist, Jemma Forte, who you know better as the Molton Brown guest, was also there with her two children who behaved impeccably.

It’s always difficult for QVC presenters to gather due to shift patterns and distance but I was really chuffed that Jackie and Catherine were both able to come, and Catherine brought Yankee Candle‘s, Steven, too.

Liz Earle magazine

Liz Earle popped in with her daughter Lily and she brought me a present – the summer 2015 edition of her Liz Earle Wellbeing magazine. I haven’t had time to read it properly but just flicking through it is packed with health tips, beauty tips and recipes, and is beautifully photographed. I’m looking forward to relaxing with it over the weekend – in between my shows on QVC. All in all it was a lovely evening, even having to give a little speech which was more nerve-racking than appearing on live TV!

Earlier in the week I had been up to my home town of Nottingham. I managed to tie in a visit to my mum with an interview on BBC Radio Nottingham. My mum was very impressed with the radio host, Verity Cowley – I think you may have gained a new listener, Verity.

Radio Nottingham

Then on Wednesday morning I drove to Brighton to pre record an interview for BBC Radio Sussex. I’m not sure when that is being broadcast but keep an eye on my twitter and Facebook for updates. When I got home I did a telephone interview with Pete Price for City Talk radio in Liverpool, which is being broadcast during his show on July 1st – the show starts at 10pm if you fancy a listen.

Radio Sussex

So it really has been busy busy busy, so much so that I haven’t had time to reply to your suggestions for sixty things to do in my sixtieth year but I will over the coming few days and thanks so much to all of you who came up with some great ideas. I have read them all though and I have chosen the three winners of a signed copy of ‘Life’s a Beach and Then…’

Congratulations to Joanna Downey, who made several brilliant suggestions, Ann Miles, who suggested a discreet tattoo, and Di Brown who thought I should try an RAF flying experience in a Spitfire!!! I will be using more of your ideas to compile my sixtieth year list, which I’ll post on here in the next couple of weeks.

Today is a very special day for Ali Keenan – her wedding day. After my hours on QVC, 2pm Carole Hochman, 3pm Prai and 5pm Clarks shoes, I will be heading to the wedding reception in Bray. I hope the weather stays kind for her and Colin.

I won’t be staying too late as I have a busy day on air tomorrow from 3pm, and I’m on Sunday and Monday too so I need to pace myself at my age!!! Which reminds me, thanks so much for my birthday cards – I picked them up at work yesterday and had another ‘birthday’ opening them.

Well, I hope you all have a lovely weekend whatever you have planned and do remember it’s Jewellery Day on Thursday

Much love,

Julia xx

PS: I almost forgot! Debs Flint has asked me to do a Facebook chat on Monday evening at 8pm on her Back To You page. I’m not really sure what this entails but I’ll do my best xxx

    Hi Julia

Congratulations on your book launch and what a lovely idea to launch on your Dad’s Birthday, all the more special…he’d be there with you!

You have been a ‘busy bee’ since your return from hols, you’ll be needing another break soon to recover. Nice to see the photos from your launch party and to see your old roomie, Anna, she looks really well and Simon looks well too. You must be really chuffed with the way everything has gone and all the 5* reviews on Amazon, brilliant!

I promise to order my copy once the house move is over and done with.

Afraid my birthday wasn’t the best one I’ve ever had…following the setback of the mortgage c**k up, the builder sent an email giving a ultimatum for exchange and completion, which was unreasonable. We spent the day waiting by the telephone whilst our solicitor tried to sort it out, so my birthday meal out never happened. However, he apologised having been made aware of the situation and things are full steam ahead, hopefully Monday!

Did you have lots of pressies? Chris bought me a ‘Fitbit HR’ in purple, wasn’t sure at first, but it’s a brilliant little gadget and I’ve already got into a routine logging everything online…nice little watch too!

    Good to see you back
    Annette x

      Hi Annette
By the time you read this hopefully everything will be sorted with your new house – fingers crossed! What a shame it mucked up your birthday – have a double celebration when you move in.
The book launch party was really enjoyable – just the right number of people and the right people. It was great to have Anna there as she has been trying to help me with publicity for the book. Are you on Facebook? I have a dedicated page for bookie updates called Julia Roberts TV.
I am actually off again after today but not on holiday – being nurse Julia for a couple of weeks plus I have to get some writing done.
I had some thoughtful birthday presents including the Skechers posted on my latest blog – our birthday seems ages ago doesn’t it.
Once I had decided on a June paperback publication there was only one day it could be – and yes I think maybe he was there with me.
Let me know how everything is going with the house

Hello Julia, Welcome back – I should add “after your break” – but it sounds as though you were busier than ever. I am delighted that you had a super birthday and that your lovely Poppy enjoyed her day as well. I have always been happy with my lot in life but if i was given the chance of moving my birthday to the Summer I would grab it with both hands, instead I just put a lot of effort into my husband’s day in July and celebrate by proxy. Finally I am beyond delighted to have won your book in your birthday competition – thank you so much. Apart from the odd Lottery win (very odd and very rare) and “Mastermind 1974” at school I have never won anything so this is an absolute treat. I am a voracious reader and once I get my head in a book I forget the World, however, I am going to exercise restraint and this will be my number one holiday read when we go away in August. You are an absolute star and much appreciated by many. Love from Jo x

      Hi Jo
I had to laugh at the idea of you celebrating your husband’s birthday as if it were your own! I must admit I love having a summer birthday, but I landed both of my children with winter ones!
I really hope you will enjoy reading my book on your holiday in August – a few of the reviews have said it is a perfect poolside or beach read. You’ll have to let me have your opinion when you’ve finished it.
I’ll let you know which of your suggestions make it onto my 60th year list
      Julia x

      Hi Pearl
So pleased you like the title and cover of my book – I do too, and it’s one of the reasons I self-published, I wanted to keep them. It is already available on Kindle – it came out on that first. If you get it I hope you will enjoy reading it on your holiday in Menorca – lovely island.

      Hi Martin
The book launch went really well thanks as did Ali Keenan’s wedding reception – beautiful location!
The breakfast show I did with Paul Lavers only ran for about six months I think – we did have a laugh though!
Sophie still has not found anywhere to buy – she has been back with us for a year now.

Congratulations on the book launch Julia, sounds like the event went really well. Good to see you back on air. You mentioned you’d recently been to Tavira. We’re going to Fuseta, just along the coast, in Sept. Do let me know how it was. I’ll be taking my Birkenstock evas in white but am tempted by the fab turquoise, and already have purple too. Bye for now. Jan x
