A wonderful gift

As I mentioned in last week’s blog, I finally got to enjoy my 60th birthday present: a trip to the O2 Arena to see Andrea Bocelli in concert.

It was a wonderfully thoughtful gift from my family, as they know how much I love his voice, but the wonderful gift I’m referring to in the title of this blog is Andrea Bocelli’s voice.

the-crowd o2-arena andrea-bocelliMy favourite rendition from the evening had to be ‘Now We Are Free’, the theme from the movie Gladiator. I cry at the end of the movie anyway, so it made me feel really emotional. It wasn’t the only time during the concert that a tear had to be inconspicuously brushed away – let me explain.

Those of you who have read ‘Life’s a Beach and Then…’ will know the significance of the next sentence.

On the journey to the O2 I saw – not one but – three rainbows, then during one of the songs in the concert the video screen was filled with falling white feathers before Bocelli sang Mario Lanza’s ‘Be My Love’, a song my dad used to perform when he was a semi-professional singer. My dad was definitely there with me in spirit.

Talking of white feathers, I have just upgraded my mobile to my first ever iPhone, as I want to be able to take selfies like the one below of me with my daughter, Sophie.

Actually, I say ‘I’, but it was really Sophie who did it for me. She also told me she had ordered a screen protector, but not that she had ordered a cover – I love it! I haven’t got the phone up and running yet, as it has been a very busy week and I’m migrating from an Android phone, but I have the weekend off so I should be all transferred by Monday.

Normally, near the start of a new month I share a picture of the yoga cat calendar with you, but that is going to have to wait until next week because I wanted to show you this. I have another ‘cat’ calendar in the kitchen and I turned the page to find the picture here on the left. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised to see a pumpkin on the October page of a calendar, but the little black kitten on the top made me gasp. It looks so much like Wilfie did when this photo of him was taken three years ago… he is huge now and very black panther-like.

Well, the temperature certainly seems to have plummeted in the early mornings and evenings over the past few days, so I thought I would mention a couple of outerwear pieces from the very popular Helene Berman range on Focus on Fashion today.

I don’t have a woven coat so this check clutch coat particularly appeals to me. It doesn’t have any fastenings, just ties with a belt – I would order it in my normal size 12 to give a good cross over to tie the belt. It’s very smart and also soft to the touch. It will be featuring in the Outerwear Directive show along with this beautiful button detail cape in red – very festive!

We are going to be launching a feature about the trend of capes and ponchos next week as part of our Style List online, have a look on Tuesday if it’s a fashion that appeals to you.

Yesterday on air I was wearing a print tunic from Nina Leonard – I had loads of compliments and questions about it, but unfortunately it is out of stock at the moment.

However, there is plenty of Nina Leonard fashion coming up this week as they have a Today’s Special Value on Wednesday the 12th – it’s a lace tunic, available in six colour choices. I thought I would also draw your attention to this ever popular jersey duster cardigan which is going to be coming in five new colours to compliment the Today’s Special Value; Blue Steel (isn’t that the look from the Zoolander film?), Blush, Blackberry, Cedar and Iris. Also look out for these stretch crepe, slim leg trousers, available in Blush, Black and Ivory. As always you can check our website for a full look at the range.

Talking of websites, just a reminder that you can sign up to receive my free newsletter on my new author website www.juliarobertsauthor.com – the first one is out on Monday – and if you sign up in October you will go into the draw to win signed copies of my Liberty Sands trilogy of books.

Must dash as I am on air with Quacker Factory at 2pm today, followed by Lola Rose at 4pm then Fashion on Friday at 5pm.

Enjoy the launch of Christmas shopping on QVC this weekend – I’ll be entertaining my mum as she is coming to stay for a few days, and supporting my friend, Gareth Southgate, who has been handed the poison chalice of the England football manager’s job.

Much love,
Julia xx

Oh Julia What a lucky lady being able to sit, watch and listen to the fantastic voice of Andrea Bocelli – I love to listen to him everyday. “Now we are Free” is an awesome recording, watched him sing it last year on The Festival of Remembrance Service and moved me to tears.

Yes, I enjoyed Andrea Bocelli very much.
You are right about Jilly, both she and Debbie Fliny joined in January 1994 although Debbie left for a while whereas Jilly has been a constant apart from two lots of maternity leave

Hi Julia, I am back from my week in Corfu, the weather was lovely and we walked miles! but on the last day when we were due to fly there were violent thunder storms and torrential rain! this meant flights were diverted to the mainland which made us 6 hours late! still a lovely break, my cat is a ragdoll with long fur and I have a cat calendar in the kitchen, but yours sounds much more entertaining! Hi Linda
How strange that you too should experience violent thunderstorms on the last day of your holiday – at least our delay wasn’t as long as yours!
Both my cat calendars are quite ‘entertaining’ as you put it!

    Hi Julia,
Glad you enjoyed your special birthday treat. It was my 60th the day you wrote your blog (Oct. 7th,). I went out with the girls on Tuesday for a meal. They gave me a huge bouquet of flowers, a balloon with 60 on and a birthday cake with the Welsh Dragon on as they know I’m a Welsh rugby fanatic!! It was one of the girl’s 60 last October . She is English and has been living here for some years now so we gave her a cake with the Welsh dragon on as we said she’s an honour welsh woman now, LOL!! I didn’t do anything special on the day of my birthday but had a Chinese takeaway in the evening. We’re hoping to go somewhere overnight to watch the fireworks next month. We were going to do it last year’s for Guy Fawkes night but it absolutely poured down and continued to rain from then on for the winter.
It’s been lovely this past week though and hopefully it’s going to be nice again this week. It makes the winter seem shorter when we get a bit of sunshine.
My lovely husband bought me a much needed new jewellery case and a book by Mavis Nicholson (the Welsh journalist /interviewer). It’s her biography which is of interest to me as she grew up a few streets away from where we live. She has lead a very interesting life and interviewed so many people.
You should have made a visit to Swansea as we’ve had such lovely weather and it has been quite mild really. I can hear the birds chirping away in one of my tree’s. I ve been filling up the seed holder everyday. They don’t stop eating.
Well time for some coffee. May take it outside to make the most of the sun.
All the best, Tina S x

      Hi Tina
I hope you enjoyed your birthday – I don’t know about you but I don’t really feel like I’ve started a new decade – it will probably catch up with me soon! Your birthday cake sounds just up your street!
Pleased to hear you’ve had some decent weather in Wales – I think it has been pretty well countrywide – sunny with blue skies as I write, although it did rain overnight.
I know what you mean about Bonfire Night, such a shame when it spoils the firework displays
      Speak soon

    Hi Julia
I sent you a letter a few weeks ago saying how I loved your trilogy
I sent a pre paid envelope to see if you would mind sending me 2 signatures to put in with my last two books as I had the first one already signed. Just wondered if you received my letter?
    Love Elizabeth X

      Hi Elizabeth
Yes, I did receive your letter and many apologies for not replying sooner – I have quite a bit going on in my private life right now.
I’ll try and sort it out when I’m in at QVC tomorrow – so pleased you enjoyed the Liberty Sands trilogy

    Hi Julia
What a brilliant night you had at the O2 especially the rendition of Mario Lanza’s ‘Be My Love’, the song your Dad used to sing…I can remember you mentioned it a couple of years ago and I sent you Mario Lanza’s CD. Used to love watching all his old black and white films, very few and far between now, shame.

Are you up and running with your iPhone? Chris got me one for Christmas and I’ve just updated it to IOS 10, which has some really brilliant messaging features now. Love the cover Sophie bought you to go with it, birds and white feathers very apt, afraid mine is a very boring silicon orange, although having seen yours I may have a change.

I can’t believe Wilfie is 3 years old already, gorgeous kitten pic

We had a week away near Exmoor in a log cabin and tried Bailey in a nearby kennels, something we never did with Bobby, he came everywhere with us. I can’t tell you how I missed him, much more than I thought, even more than Chris. We were able to log in every day to the Kennels FB page where they put pictures up and he was having a whale of a time. He will be back there again for one night tomorrow, because on our return from holiday there was a letter waiting for me about my CT surgery, which is tomorrow…eek! Not something I’m looking forward to, but after the Consultant pointed out the muscle wastage at the bottom of my thumb, needs must, something I hadn’t noticed before, but, pardon the pun, it sticks out like a sore thumb, every time I look at it now and I have had to wear my wrist support at night to stop the pins ‘n’ needles! So my right hand will be out of action for a bit, it will be fun using the other hand and I have been practicing the last few days…it’s not easy!!

Back to one handed typing for a bit, oh joy!

    Love Annette x

BTW just signed up for your newsletter!

      Hi Annette
I hope your surgery went well? I won’t be expecting such a lengthy post from you if you are going to be typing left-handed!
It’s funny, I’m sure we miss our pets much more than they miss us – provided they are in reputable accommodation it’s probably a nice little holiday for them.
Wilfie is a very big cat – when he stretches out fully I reckon he is approaching three feet long! We had his brother Milo to stay for a night last weekend – he us much smaller.
I am up & running on my iPhone – it’s not the latest, just a free upgrade, but I’m finding it fairly similar to using my iPad & it’s great to be able to take pictures & tweet them from a much smaller device.
Thanks for signing up to my newsletter – hope you enjoyed the first one?
      Good luck with your recovery

hi Julia it was lovely to read your blog once again and I am glad you enjoyed your birthday present from your family to see Bocelli you are very lucky
I hope you don’t mind me asking you but would it be possible if you would be able to tell me where Sophie got that cover from as my best friend lost her mother in law a year ago and she always says that when she sees a white feather it reminds her of her and I would like to buy something like that for her.

I hope you will be able to help

    Take care

      Hi Julie
I just asked my daughter where she got the phone cover from & she replied with the name of a large South American river!!! Just go to their site & type in white feather phone cover & hopefully you will see the same one.

So glad you had a lovely time at the Andrea Bocelli concert Julia. Mario Lanza was my late Dad’s favourite singer. I got my first iPhone a couple of weeks ago I love it.
