This last week was a particularly exciting one for me. Not only did I have another week at QVC but I was also getting ready for my husband and I’s first ever weekend away without the kids. We were heading to Lake Garda, Italy for a wedding of some very good friends. As any parent knows, free time or me time, whatever you want to call it, is a rarity when you have small children so you can imagine how much we were looking forward to it. But as excited as I was, it also filled me with all the usual anxieties of motherhood. What if something happens to them and I’m not there? What if they wake up in the night? Graze a knee and need a cuddle? Or worse yet what if they don’t miss us at all! My parents would be looking after them so I knew they would be in good hands – well with my mother anyway, my dad has a tendency to leave front doors open!
So knowing we would be away, I made sure to do some nice things with Tilda and Ivy before we went. I took them down to the beach where we rent a beach hut and had some fun in the sun. We love the beach and are very lucky to live only ten minutes away. It’s instant entertainment, all you need is a bucket and spade and the kids are in heaven.
Realistically though when your kids are as young as mine (4 & 1) then you need a suitcase load of stuff for every eventuality. Top of that list is of course suncream. This is something that fills my eldest with fear, cue irrational screaming and melt downs. I’ve tried all types of application but it simply comes down to the fact that Tilda does NOT like cream of any kind on her face. So I have to know that what I do get on her is going to last all day and really importantly does NOT sting her eyes. Believe me I’ve tried all the kids ‘so called’ sensitive products and so many make her eyes absolutely stream. Thankfully I have discovered Ultrasun. This isn’t a new brand to me, I’ve been a fan for a while simply because it’s fantastic for me, my husband and our kids. So I was very happy to be armed with the family pack that is coming as the Today’s Special Value this Friday 17th.
I was really tempted to try the set with the tinted version for myself but of course the mother in me chose what was best for the kids! I won’t put less than factor 30 on them so this set is perfect, it goes on beautifully and sinks in quickly. I know they are protected, particularly Ivy who is very fair so would burn easily. And the winning factor? It doesn’t make their eyes stream. Winner!!! I won’t lie, Tilda kicks off at any kind of cream so it’s still a mission but once it’s on I know I don’t have to worry so it’s worth it. The sports gel is also a god send for my husband who is always out, running, cycling and swimming. He’s into triathlon in case you hadn’t guessed. He can be gone for three hours on his bike and he often comes back with red shoulders and arms which of course I tell him off for. So now I have got him using this gel which gives him protection and doesn’t sweat off into his eyes. He has given it the thumbs up. I am also so happy to have a sun cream for my face that is also anti-ageing, one less thing for me to think about!
So the weekend arrived and Fred and I took the kids up to my parents’ house and the following morning got up at 4.30am for the airport. It was very strange leaving the kids behind but also exciting. I bought three magazines, three!!! When did I last even read one cover to cover?! I even bought a book, but I won’t lie I clearly got over excited in the shop. It didn’t get read.
When we flew to Milan, I was wearing my Kim and Co navy jumpsuit which was the perfect travelling outfit. I didn’t have to think, I just threw it on and off I went and I was extremely comfortable and felt stylish. I was landing in Milan after all!
We then got our hire car and drove to Lake Garda, we had never been there before so it was so wonderful to see the vast Lake appear before us sparkling in the sun as we arrived. We were staying at a beautiful hotel called Villa Vittoria (which was amazing value by the way, I recommend it). The afternoon was ours to do what we wanted, we got spot of lunch with some crisp Rose and then did what we had been dreaming about for ages, absolutely nothing.
We hit the sun loungers and just relaxed, what a treat. I teamed my swimsuit with one of my favourite things from QVC, the Lola Rose multi scarf as my cover up, and even added a bit of glamour with a necklace from Or Paz.
On the Saturday we woke up to a bride and bridegrooms worst nightmare. Torrential rain. I mean the type of rain you see in films and you say that looks ridiculously fake! You couldn’t see across the lake. We all kept everything crossed that it would clear. By 2pm it had finally stopped and our wishes were granted. The sun came out in full force.
I had of course stocked up on all my favourite products from QVC to help make me look my best.
My make up was a combination of Laura Geller, Bobbi Brown, Benefit, Becca and Tarte. Fake tan was courtesy of Vita Liberata. It’s a real treat once in a while to get ready without kids running in and causing chaos and rubbing their snotty noses on your best dress! I wore a bright blue dress that I’ve had for years and gave it an update by wearing a fabulous cuff from RFM. I had a lot of compliments on my earrings to!
We met for our transport at 2.30pm along with a few drinks, hurrah. I say transport because we didn’t know in what or where we were going. At 3pm the ushers announced we should head to the boats! The entire wedding guest party walked along the water side like a parade which was quite a sight to see. People were coming out of the restaurants to watch! We boarded the boats and were whisked to an island on the lake and as we approached, something magical started to appear. An incredible, beautiful former monastery called Isola del Garda. It was jaw dropping, was this really where we were going?!
The wedding was incredible from start to finish, the ceremony was outside looking out to sea and was so very beautiful. The stunning bride, Maria, walked down the aisle to Ave Maria which was perfect. (You can see some more pictures of the dress on my Instagram). There were whoops, cheers and happy tears as they walked out as husband and wife as we all threw white rose petals.
Drinks and canapes on a stunning balcony followed and then on to a marquee for the dinner and party. My goodness what a fantastic day it was, the food was wonderful and the band were brilliant, the speeches had us laughing and crying. Surrounded by so many wonderful friends and getting to celebrate the marriage of two brilliant people was the perfect weekend away. A massive thank you to Dan and Maria for having us there for your big day. We of course missed the kids but getting to do this was a real treat, goodness knows when we will do it again!
It was so lovely to see the kids in the morning when we got home, armed with little presents for them and some Lake Garda D.O.P Olive Oil and Salami for my mum and dad.
Now though it’s back to work feeling fresh and ready for another great week at QVC.
