A Surprise Guest

OskarLast Saturday I arrived home from work to find Chris preparing lasagne for dinner. It's our daughter Sophie's favourite dinner so I asked him if she was coming round for the evening.

He acted all innocent and shrugged his shoulders. As I came downstairs from taking my make-up off with my Emma Hardie Moringa Balm, the doorbell rang.

I wasn't really that surprised to see Sophie standing there but I was surprised to see her carrying a cat basket. She had mentioned that she and her flatmate Gilly were considering getting a kitten but I wasn't expecting it to happen quite so soon.

We carried the basket into the lounge and closed the door, a) so that the kitten couldn't escape and b) to keep our cat, Poppy, away.

You might think we were being mean to Poppy but actually we were keeping her away so that she wouldn't be scared of a kitten less than half her size! The kitten was quite happy to come out of it's basket and have a nose around, amazing since the girls had only got him that morning.

He is jet black and as you can see from the photo he has rather large ears and beautiful eyes. What you can't see are his feet which are also a bit on the large side so I suspect he may grow into quite a big cat. He is so small at the moment that he cuddles up inside Sophie's furry Dennis Basso hat – almost like a nest. He did quite a lot of playing and exploring and was then spark out for an hour or so.

We did bring Poppy into the room to meet him and she was quite good if a little on the nervous side. Hopefully the more he visits, the more she will accept him. The girls hadn't had chance to think of a name for him so they were just referring to him as 'no name'.

I suggested Wilfred, in honour of the Crystal Palace player, Wilfred Zaha, who was called up to the England football squad the following evening, but the girls settled on Oskar which I must confess, suits him better.

Butler and Wilson Today's Special ValueTalking of small animals, lots of you have been asking questions about the Panda bracelet/watch that I have been wearing for the last week. I can reveal that it is, of course the Butler and Wilson Today's Special Value, launching tonight at midnight with myself and Simon Wilson.

The watch is also available in two other options, the colourful owl and the iconic skeleton head but my favourite is definitely the panda.

I hope you can join Simon and I at midnight tonight and we are also on together at 8pm tomorrow, although I suspect the TSV will be long gone by then!

Enjoy your weekend!

Much love Julia xx

Hi Julia,Love the new kitten !!!I want one!!, but my old ginger tom cat would not be amused. I had three cats at one point but they all got old ,and now we are down to one,and he is now fifteen, and I adore him. My sister’s garden backs onto ours and she has two older kittens which play in my garden, Ben ( my cat) see,s them off !! He’s so put out!!! I usually home RSPSA kittens, I always say a home is not a home without a pusscat around (even though Iv’e put up with the things they bring home, we even had a bat one day )Enjoy little Oskar !! best wishes Yvie x

    Hi Julia
I like Oskar. He looks a wee cracker. Not a big fan of cats but he looks cool!!
What an acheivement for Wilfred Zaha. Hope you guys can hang on to him but unfortunately I think he’ll move on soon. He should go with a big price tag though. Sorry to rub this in but what about the 4th goal by Ibrahimovic!! Some goal was it not!
    Have a nice weekend

    Hi Julia,
Sophie’s kitten looks gorgeous, they are so lovely when they are little, you do not see many black cats, they usually have some kind of marking on them. Poppy will soon get use to her, someone strange on her territory.
I was watching the show for the Kitchen Aid, fantastic machines, I purchased one when QVC had a previous TSV, I had the mincer with mine, a glass bowl, and Ice Cream Maker as the extra’s, it was to replace my Kenwood which I had had for a number of years, one of the best purchases when I got the Kitchen Aid, you can do so much with them, and they are so quick. I did my Christmas Cake in it the other day, turned out lovely. Kitchen Aid also do a lovely range of Toasters etc, getting tempted.
I saw you doing the Cristmas Tree with the Icing, pretty good for a first attempt. I always admire all these cakes which have lovely decorations on them, have not quite got the skill for that.
Will be watching Simon’s shows today if I get time, I love his shows, even better when you are on with him, you both seem to have a great time.
Have a great weekend, and tell Sophie to look after that gorgeous kitten, love the name they have chosen, I had a Conermara Grey (horse) called Oskar, and wow was he naughty.
    Love Jean XX

    Hi Julia
Oskar looks so cute, I thought you might have asked them to call it Crystal, for good reasons, Your great team is at the top of the table, you must be so proud and very happy.
Yes Steve we all seen Ibrahimovic great goal, I for one had my phone ringing all night after that match, because my brother lives in Sweden, and his son just wont stop talking about it, as Ibrahimovic is his hero.
Great show Julia with Simon, I got my TSV, as I knew what it was going to be from Simon and Ali, film on You Tube which he posted on face book. Iam off to Egypt in a week, but thanks to QVC my Christmas shopping is more or less Done.
    Much love.

Oh Julia, You’ve fed that flame that always burns within me to have another cat. After 34 years of being together we’re back to where we were in our pre-children days with only one puss; a beautiful and much loved 15 year old boy called Bertie. His mum was a pedigree but his dad was the local “bad boy” and we have an amazing cat who has his mother’s good looks and his father’s street cred! He’s now an only because we lost our last girl in September; Kizzy was a stray who I found outside my office in 1996, she became a wonderful family pet; friendly, loving and loyal. I miss her more than I can say. On a lighter note the QVC Christmas graphics remind me of my first purchase; a Christmas tree brooch in a free form style set with crystals that I still wear it every holiday season. Who was the presenter who sold it to me? It was you and your enthusiasm, professionalism and warmth are the same today which is why I still have loyalty to the “Q”. Love from Jo x.

    Hi Julia
How could I resist commenting on such a gorgeous little boy. They’re such fun at that age aren’t they. Like you say, mad half hours and then zonk out for an hour. I remember Suki running up my very expensive custom made dining room curtains! I nearly died! Needless to say, she wasn’t allowed in there for a while after that, lol!
Our darling girl sadly passed away early October. At 19 years, I know she did well, especially for a pedigree puss, but we miss her so. Our little boy, Casper, has also been traumatised. We’ve been backwards and forwards to the vets with him but, fingers crossed, I feel like we’ve now turned a corner. He let us sleep until 7am this morning and, despite it being a Sunday, believe me, that’s massive progress! Of course, all that stress has taken its toll so I’ll be more than ready for the Elemis TSV coming up in a couple of weeks!!
Has Sophie seen Breaking Dawn part 2? I’d love to know what she thought of it. We went on Friday. It was a bit like crashing a teens party but, what with my ‘Elemis’ face, I think I got away with it, lol!!

Hi Julia, the picture of Oskar is lovely. You can’t beat having animals around the home. There’s always someone who’s pleased to see you, even if you look rubbish and feel even worse! I have two dogs (mongrels) and three cats. The younger two are sisters and I’ve just had them spayed. Sophie will have lots of funny half hours with Oskar, I just hope that he doesn’t do what my two do and run up the door frames!!

    Hi Julia
Love the picture of Oskar, he’s sooo cute! You know my aversion to cats being allergic to them and the time the black cat jumped on my back in the cemetry, giving me a real fright! I really don’t mind them from a distance though.
Will definitely get Chris to write on your blog on my behalf after my hand op, which just so happens to be next Tuesday, the 27, Daniel’s birthday, so will you wish him a happy birthday from me on the day!
I’m hoping to get as much as possible done this week beforehand (pardon the pun lol!), so that it’s easy for Chris next week. Hopefully, I’ll be sending your chrissy card out with a little something inside…I’ll let you know when I’ve done so, so you can keep an eye out for it.
Been watching Strictly and I’m pretty sure that Denise will win, but no doubt anything can happen on the day. Chris gets very annoyed at the fact that they abviously do the results on the same day, but make out it’s done on Sunday, they just change their clothes! As for I’m a Celebrity, I think like everyone else we were so relieved that Helen got the 12 stars at long last!
Have you been watching both too?
Looking forward to the L’Occitane show, they do a gorgeous perfume on their website and it’s a shame that QVC doesn’t stock it, it has 18 5* reviews on their website. It’s called ‘Eau d’Iparie’, very warm and sensual, my favourite!

    Hi Yvie
Oskar has been for three visits now and seems quite at home in our house. Sophie and Gilly bring him in his basket and he has his litter tray and some hard food. He’s obviously relaxed here as on Sunday he ‘went’ in his lit tray. How can such a little kitten do something that smells so bad!!!!!
On Tuesday we let him explore the house a bit, his first time up stairs, but we didn’t let him go near Poppy’s favourite places. I think Poppy is tolerating hime well but not exactly friends yet!
    take care

    Hi Steven
I think cool is the perfect description for Oskar! I like cats because they are so independant but when they give you a ‘love’ it’s because THEY want to.
You are right about the Ibrahimovic goal – an absolute cracker, the sort of goal that comes from the feeling that you already have the game won!
Shame Wilfy didn’t get more of a run out but plenty of time for that in the years to come. Steve Parrish has slapped a £20 million price tag on Wilfred but has gone on record saying he doesn’t want to sell him in January as if we keep this team together we have a good chance of making it to the Premiership with the massive payday that brings.
If we are on telly this season check out the other winger, Bolasie and also our Captain Jedinak – we really do have a good team.
Leeds away this weekend – hope our winning streak continues

    Hi Jean
So glad you are pleased with your Kitchen Aid. They are really good machines – very sturdy. Must confess I liked the glass bowl but it is available as a separate purchase for anyone who got this TSV. I’ve never had a food mixer – I do everything by hand, maybe it’s time to treat myself?!?
Oskar is a really cute little fella and seems to have taken a shine to Daniel and Chris when he visits although he will happily sit on any of us when he wants to go to sleep.

    Hi Carole
I think you should have had your Butler & Wilson panda watch by now so hoping you like it. You are right Simon is on with me this Sunday from 6 – 8pm for his Couture show …. his last show this year! How time flies. By all means sit on your hands but do watch as it’s usually fun.
Ali Keenan is a Micheal Buble fan so if your hubbie chickens out you could ask her to go LOL!!!!!

    Hi Magda
I’m not sure when you’re going to Egypt but if I’ve caught you have a great time.
I can’t believe you’ve got all your Christmas shopping done – I haven’t even bought any Christmas cards yet. I’d better step on it this weekend with QVC’s Big Christmas Shopping Weekend – L’Occitane TSV will be a good starting point as it can be split into smaller presents!
    Hope your health is ok?

    Hello Jo
What a lovely post – so pleased that you still wear your first purchase and that you are still shopping with us!
Chris and I will be celebrating 35 years together in January so very similar to you – a lot happens in all those years! We had two cats, Dylan and Charlie, pre-children but we now just have Poppy ……….. at the moment that is! As a cat lover you might enjoy chapter 4 of my book when it comes out in February.

    Hi Marian
Long time no speak. Sorry to hear about Suki but as you say 19 is some age for any cat, but especially pedigree. Poppy is 17 and a half and is still very kittenish in lots of ways but she does seem to be sleeping a lot more of late. Hope Casper continues to improve. I’m pretty sure Dylan’s death traumatized Poppy when she was younger.
Really looking forward to seeing Keeley for the Elemis TSV – there is a body oil ( evening blooms body oil ) which smells of white flowers …… beautiful.
I’ll try and remember to ask Sophie about Breaking Dawn part 2 – is that the vampire movie?? She came with us to see Skyfall – have you seen it?
    speak soon

    Hi Paula
No luck with the house yet but we are still looking! We have been able to extend our tenancy on the house we are in at the moment so at least we know we will have a roof over our heads for Christmas. I’m sure the ‘right’ house will come along in the end.

    Hi Bev
You are so funny but very accurate – Poppy couldn’t care less if I’m wearing make-up or not, although she does like to rub around my legs while I’m taking it off!
Sophie is fairly strict with Oskar, not allowing him on tables and work surfaces but she and Gilly take it in turns to have him sleep on their bed otherwise he mioaws constantly. Apparently he woke Sophie up the other morning because he had actually got under the covers with her, so she put him out of the bed and then he got stuck in her waste paper bin.
I told her it was karma for the sleepless nights she gave me, although in truth there weren’t that many!

    Hi Annette
Thanks for the birthday wishes for Daniel – you’ve got a good memory! Good luck with the hand operation and let’s hope it does the trick. What a few years you’ve had with the various health issues – hope 2013 will be better for you.
I don’t always see I’m a Celebrity because of work but I must admit Helen was starting to irritate me. I can’t decide whether I think she is as dumb as she makes out or if she’s a very clever actress? My friend Denise says Rosemary Shrager is a lovely lady so I’m kind of rooting for her but I also like Ashley ……. good surname!!!!
Put your feet up and relax after Tuesday and tell Chris I expect him to keep me updated

    Hi Julia
What a horrible, horrible day it’s been here, wind and torrential rain, although I was very lucky this morning, I have had my hair cut and highlighted for the first time in 12 months…horray!!
It had grown sooo long, past my shoulders and I’ve had a good ’10 inches’ taken off the back!! Now sporting, what they call an inverted bob, where it’s shorter at the nape and longer at the sides, much easier to care for…could see Ali Y suiting that style also!
Thought Rosemary did very well last night with the pesky crabs and as you say Ashley does have a very good surname, as for Helen…uuumh!
Next time Chris will be on here updating you. Have a good weekend and TSV.
