A night at the Opera – a first for me! Plus two fab films, a Bibi Blooper, and the long-awaited Red Carpet Nails competition!

Red Carpet TSVThis week –

– Meet Eugene Onegin

– a TiFFT at the opera!

– Red Carpet Manicure competition! Win a bumper bundle.

– Wide feet focus? Check out three ranges online!

– Two fab films – ‘Hitchcock’ and ‘This Is 40’

– Plus – blooper – Maxine from Bibi goes red!

How do you enter the comp to win over £170 worth of Red Carpet long-lasting Gel Manicure goodies? And what was my very first opera like? Read on…

OK, so the first little section this week is kind of a tale of two halves – quite literally, in the case of my trip to the Royal Opera House on Monday. It was my first ever experience of live opera – so a worthy TiFFT – a ‘Try it For The First Time’ club event for February.

Quite a cultured experience it was, with all the wonderful pomp and ceremony that’s inevitably involved in any event at the grand old Royal Opera House near Covent Garden. Everyone in their Sunday Best – a ‘refined’ experience indeed, eg.. ahem .. £12 per glass for champagne!

Royal Opera HouseLet alone dining in the amazing Paul Hamlyn Hall Balconies Restaurant. Well turns out these operas – often all in Italian or German or in this case, Russian – are nowadays made more accessible because amazingly, did you know they actually show subtitles – a bit like they are on the telly?

Only in this case, they’re displayed ABOVE the action – on a screen at the top of the stage – hence they’re called ‘sur-titles’. So, I was reassured that I didn’t need a crash course in Russian to enjoy it.

I duly sat in anticipation, fascination and expectation. Then all at once the band finished tuning, struck up, and the curtains drew back. There we were back in 19th century Russia listening to Tchaikovsky’s tale of a letter to a lost love, and a life you can’t relive. See here for more info about the story (Click here) Thing was – the vital surtitles didn’t work!

So the whole of the first half was spent in total frustration! You ever felt that feeling where you didn’t get picked for the team? Or everyone around you has done the homework, but you were away the day they did the lesson and didn’t know any of it? Well at that point, I felt just like I was back in Mr Saunders’ maths class, aged 11, doing quadratic equations. Initially, I just didn’t get it. Despite the précis in the programme. (Thank god for it, actually, so at least I knew roughly what the plot was.)

But as each scene was endlessly sung and tirelessly emoted by the marvellous performers – I just couldn’t understand a blimmin word! I guess that’s the way it used to be all the time – no translation or nuffink . But not nowadays – normally. I could have cried!

Deb at Royal Opera HouseSo off we go for the break – er, interval – and when the second half – er, act – began, up came the apology for missing surtitles… and there they were!

The sudden appearance of the English phrases above the action, keeping yours truly informed of every betrayal, duel, confession and refusal meant that all became clear! Hooray!!! It was night and day compared to the first half. So yes, I enjoyed it, and yes I would go again.

BUT soooo expensive for tickets – do they say opera is only for the few? That may be why. Do you go? Have you ever been? If you are curious, guess what – you might be able to find the special showings of the ‘live cinema relay’ of ROH’s Eugene Onegin in an Odeon near you! Epsom have it on 20th Feb, for example. Check it out!

Meanwhile here’s a little taster of what it was all about for me – literally – (when you watch it you’ll know why!) hehe!

So if I go again, to another show, what would you recommend? Those of you that know opera? Leave me a comment below and tell me – add ‘red carpet’ to the comment and you’ll also be entered in this week’s competition!

Yes my lovely sister Linda is finally back on air with a new Red Carpet Manicure TSV – the long lasting gel manicure you’ve taken to heart over the last nine months or so! Just check out the reviews here (click here) – 4.7 out of 5 across 233 reviews – wow! Read some and you’ll see why it’s so eagerly anticipated.

This new set includes a choice of berry colours or the French/champagne set, each with two lots of removal packs, pink and blue liquids. And a lamp – watch out for the demo of the two-lamp speed technique – for those who have a lamp already – or a gifting idea.

Red CarpetJoin us for the midnight launch – over £131 of value, for about £75 &p.p. BUT in the meantime, why not enter my new comp! One lucky person will win a superb bumper bundle of Red Carpet Goodies – a TSV set, in the berry colours, plus the other option’s extra colours – French and champagne – thrown in as a treat for my blog readers and tweeps! Worth around £170! For full T & C’s go here (Click here)

HOW TO ENTER – Just leave me a comment below, saying you’d like to be in the draw, eg stating this hashtag phrase – ‘#RedCarpetManicureCompetition’ – in your comment.

Tweeters can also re-tweet and follow, and should include this hashtag phrase (# phrase) as above, in order to be entered into the random draw. The closing date for entries to be posted or tweeted by you is 3rd March.

The winner will be announced by email on 4th March. Good luck! And see you on air Monday at midnight for the new Today’s Special Value set! Do call in on the night if you love it! Or leave me a comment below before Sunday night ends!

Wide shoes WIDE FEET WIN!

Also, don’t know if you noticed, but the Skechers show on Sunday night was full of wider styles!

Yes, Lisa Hickerton our lovely buyer tells me there are wider shoes and boots also available now in Clarks and in Hotters – search these three brands online.

This week’s Wide Feet Focus is the pair of Skechers I fell in love with that night and bought two colours – sooo comfy! 106248 (click here)

Do give them a go – many are wider.

Wide shoes 2And let me know if you’ve found any little gems on our website you’re thrilled with, if you’re similarly ‘hobbit foot’ed like me! And note there are loads of Skechers on ‘last clicks’ pricing on our website!

Thanks to everyone who lobbied, along with me, to bring in wider styles for wider feet.

Now we need to make sure we buy them regularly so they know there’s a demand, and Lisa says we may be able to gain a whole hour specifically for wider feet, on the scheduling!

Otherwise how about these mary jane style ones 102458 – (Click here) – my wide size 7 and half (normally need 8) fit into a size 7 in these ! Yay!

Now time for another little blooper from the last week or so and it’s the turn of Bibi Bijoux’s Maxine, who embarrasses herself with a little too much information about her personal life, on her jewellery show last week!

– Behind the scenes – FM initiation number 2! Another little highlight from last week, and this time it’s FM Laura who was enlisted to appear on air, and help me show the nifty Slim-Be weight loss drink! How game she was, bless her! (I won’t tell you what they were saying in her ear to put her off but I’m sure you can imagine!)

– Will and Charlie’s first date secrets! Loved the little bit of sharing Will did, during the Charlie Bears TSV bargain on Tuesday night! Here it is again if you missed it – who says romance is dead?! Lol. What would your own reaction have been to that suggestion for a first date? Leave me a comment below!

Charlie bears– And courtesy of my mate Kirsteen, who’s an avid Bear Collector, just look at this pic!

It’s another one that sooo needs a caption!

Any ideas?!

Kim & Co Skirt– I was chuffed this week that the Kim n co pencil skirt went down a bundle!

Had so many compliments when wearing this lovely stretch lacy pencil skirt at the weekend

– if you’d like one, it’s 105558 (click here) or 105559 for petite (click here).

Ammolite– I was glad to help out in a last minute stand-in ‘cos of sickness this week. An old buddy, Korite Ken returned to our screens, with his amazing Ammolite range of jewellery. I love it!

As an archaeology geek, I find this colourful gemstone made of ancient fossilized ammonites fascinating!

He’s back May 4th, I believe – can’t wait!

Game show-Game show needs you! Earmarked this ad in the week, to post it here for those of you who are up for a go at something different . Very different!

But – Closing date is this weekend – 15/16 Feb. Take a closer look at it by clicking on it to expand, then respond sharpish, if you’ve ever fancied being on the telly!

It’s with Objective Productions – the same company that created my game show, Meet The Challenge, which I hosted in 1998. Good luck!

-Facebook funny-

This cute pic is for those that wonder about my four errant hounds and their antics. This week, Daisy and Gracie the choccie labs decided to ‘make like Steve McQueen and James Garner’ once more – with another Great Escape!

Yes, the Labrador sisters were off taking themselves for a walk again around the nearby woods. Hence the newly acquired scratches on my poor hands after wiring up the holes in the fence – Grrrr!

They’d never get up to such mischief if they were still little, like these cuddly pups! If only, eh!

WATCH – ooo some lovely films this week! Had a double whammy – Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins in the superbly acted ‘Hitchcock’ – the biopic covering the filming of his most successful movie, ‘Psycho’, and Hitch’s obsession with his leading lady (Scarlett Johanssen). So touching, the relationship between the two leads, plus the period details were gobsmacking. Well worthy of an impressive 8.25 out of ten.

Remember I asked you last week what should I see out of that and ‘This Is 40’? Well I couldn’t choose so I saw the latter as well – same night! Lol! Anything with Paul Rudd in is all right by me, and Leslie Mann – wife of the successful director of the movie, Judd Apatow – was superb. Special mention to the two kids too – Apatow and Mann’s offspring! Ones to watch for the future for sure. And some other of my faves – Jason Segal and Chris O Dowd to name but two – were also stellar.

Do go if you love quirky, coarse, true to life comedies. Don’t go if you are about 40 and have real relationship doldrums – unless you’re prepared to stay till the ending with its predictably happy but welcome outcome.

I give it 8.5, a little higher than Hitch ‘cos of the funny, funny script. Well done Judd – now officially my favourite director! You’ll maybe recall I featured Knocked Up on DVD a few weeks back? Well this is his ‘kind of sequel’ about mid-life crisis in suburbia. Do catch both if you can!

Richard JacksonSNEAKY PEEK

– You’re getting adventurous now, and requesting your own sneaky peeks from me!

For instance, this week I was facebooked about the upcoming Ronnie Nicole TSV and posted a pic to all my facebook pals (see below to join me or follow me on twitter)!

Well this week’s SNEAKY PEEK is a heads-up about the new Richard Jackson book all about containers and hanging baskets. All you need to know about getting the best out of planters, tubs etc. On 2nd March- enjoy!

Ronni Nicole TSVQVC – this weekend it’s our Fashion 3-pay extravaganza! (fri/sat).

Can’t wait to be on with Antthony both Friday (15th) at 8pm and Saturday night too!

And here’s that pretty Ronnie Nicole TSV dress for Saturday.

Monday's TSVThen Sunday midnight, I launch a new super-value set of READING spectacles – here’s my set! Don’t miss it!

And of course the exciting Red Carpet Manicure TSV on Monday night at midnight/ throughTuesday!

Hi Debbie. It was a lot of fun reading your blog again. I must admit I haven’t tried this Nail Polish yet, but I like the idea of it being long lasting and you don’t have to re-do it again every 2 or 3 days. ‘#RedCarpetManicureCompetition’ would be fabulous trial for me as I am a busy single mum and just don’t have the time to sit and do my nails all the time.

See you’ve had another busy week. I’ve got Boogie Nights to look forward to next month with VIP back stage passes –I hope this means I get to meet Merrill, Jay and Jimmy!!
You looked fabulous in the Kim and Co skirt
    Have a great week

I’m not a culture vulture by birth (!!!)) but saw my first opera aged 12 and I can highly recommend ‘Madame Butterfly’ by Puccini. Story is easy to follow (unrequited love) and setting spectacular. I literally wept buckets through some of the arias and it will stay with you forever.
By the way, you looked stunning in the pencil skirt on air recently.

    Hi Debbie
Interested to hear about your night at the opera, Eugene Onegin is one of my favourites and it must have been great to hear Rene Fleming as Tatyana.
I would recommend Carmen to someone new to opera. Wonderful, famous melodies like the Toreador aria, a feisty heroine, lots of passion and tragedy!
Have just enjoyed the Yong Kim show. Keep up the good work!
    All the best

Hi Debbie, An opera! ooo… I’d get lost too. ‘Hitchcock’ does look very good and ‘This Is 40’! ha ha, I couldn’t stop sniggering through that trailer! Me thinks two cinema trips are required (both with munch-ables of course). Speaking of interesting looking films ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ due out early March looks awesome, same producer as ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Both are probably very different to ‘Hitchcock’ and ‘This Is 40’, but I admit I am a bit of a graphics/CVG junkie!
Caption: “Mum!! we want a better jungle gym!”.
I would love to be in the #RedCarpetManicureCompetition

Glad to know that I am not the only one with a wandering Lab this week! Mine was let off for a free run and took that as her signal to go walkabout and swim-about for an hour! Would NOT be called back! Eventually did ‘come’, smiling, breathless, unrepentant and muddy! Been doing a LOT more obedience work since then!
Love the movie reviews and hoping to see Hitchcock soon.
I would not be without my lovely set of reading glasses – one for every event and outfit!

Congratulations on finally stocking wide size shoes. Very dissapointed to find no larger sizes than 8. QVC caters for XXXL ladies clothes, then why not shoes? Surely with QVCs buying power, manufacturers could be encouraged to make larger sizes? Please please help, desperate!!!
I love Yong Kim clothes, but unfortunately I’m a size 2XL. Please bear us larger ladies in mind, who are very fashion concious.
Love, love QVC and I spend all money every month on QVC! Debbie you cheer me up everytime I see you on air. Suexx

Hi Debbie Would love to enter the Red Carpet Manicure Competition. It is my daughter’s 40th birthday on the 17th February and she is somewhat down, going through a divorce at the moment. Hey ho, they say life begins at 40 and I hope it does. She works so hard as a Teaching Assistant and is bringing up two young boys so life is tough. Thanks to my buying her OPI Nail Envy she now has beautiful nails and it would be wonderful for her to have gel nails and we could have a girly daughter and Mum night doing our nails with a glass of wine. Anyway just to tell you you looked fab in that black skirt and love your hair up all curly. Go girl! Sorry I can’t tweet and am not on facebook so have to do all of this in the “old fashioned way”.
    Lots of love

Hi Debbie. I am so pleased you enjoyed your night out at the opera. I have not been and I am scared of how much the tickets would be especially after what you said.
I love doing my nails and experimenting using different techniques but one that I have yet to try is the gel manicure. The new tsv looks amazing and I woild really love to win ‘#red carpet manicure collection’. I am out of work at the moment and money is very tight I am all self taught when it comes to nails but I would love to do it for a job if I coild get fhe fund’s together for a course to get a certificate so I would be able to get insurance. So If I won ‘the red carpet manicure collection’ that would be something else up my sleeve. Or rather on the end of my hands lol. Take care. I hope I win. X

    Hi Debbie,
I’ve entered the competition on Twitter – I’m on there as Cath Purple and learning! I’ll let you know why at a later date hopefully! I was going to get involved with Facebook and Twitter, but was diagnosed with breast cancer, so everything was put on hold!! Most treatment is finished now, but waiting to get my energy back – I just want to sleep all the time at the moment! Old age plays a part as well probably!!
It’s my birthday today and I have been treated by my lovely family this weekend. Just sitting on my own at home now feeling quite sad it’s over!
I have followed you from almost the beginning of QVC and love watching you – so glad you came back- although I used to watch you on the other channel too! You really cheer me up and I love reading your blogs! You have all the energy I wish I had!
Thanks for all your fun and tips. Any more on Twitter would be appreciated!
    Best wishes

And if I won the competition…. So, yes please I would like to enter 😉

#RedCarpetManicureCompetition is a definite one for me to enter as my nails have always been an area I take pride in – making sure that I keep them well groomed. However, since I retired from work just before Christmas I don’t have the money to spend on salon manicures and although I can rely on other products from QVC to help (Nail Envy and other OPI products to name a few) I am sure that a Red Carpet Manicure would help me be a stylish senior! I know that QVC can always keep me up to date and feeling young at heart with new and interesting products and presenters that can help me learn how to get the best from them! I would love to win this competition!

Hey Debbie, really enjoyed the Skechers show you did but do think i should speak out on behalf of your poor maligned feet (hobbit or otherwise) you shouldn’t be so mean about them & call them names coz they are in charge of carrying you around & they might decide to reap revenge on you & decide to slip or trip you up (queue twilight zone tune):-D
Can’t wait for you & Lin running the TSV tonight, there last ew weeks have taken ages to be used up. Expecting the usual hillarity & entertainment (& of course useful information -debbie’s bosses!) In the meantime Debs can you enter me in #RedCarpetManicurecompetition

I absolutely adore “#RedCarpetManicures’ and would love to go into the draw please, it’s brilliant colours last for weeks, and it’s great that you have now brought us French Manicure! I find it easily adaptable, because you can paint over the top of colours with ordinary polish if you want a quick change without taking off the polish below! It’s so good you don’t get the chance to use all the lovely colours they now do, thank’s to your lovely sister for bringing them to QVC, and a good tip for removing the polish when you have used the supply in the box, is to cut some tinfoil into squares and put a small piece of cotton wool onto the foil and it works just as good, so thank’s for bringing us another great product, looking forward to seeing the new set,!!! Lot’s of love to you all, Lynda R xxxx

‘#RedCarpetManicureCompetition I love the red carpet stuff, can’t enough of it, it strengths my nails, a colour what lasts forever, It’s good because you can paint your nails in a gel polish, you can do it at a convient time for you. No more wasting your time waiting in a nail bar. You know this product is not going to ruin your nails if you apply it right and remove it correctly. I love the fact you can bring the beauty salon to the comfort of your own home. The product is so easy to apply. In fact I love this product lots and comes highly recommend by myself. Also it’s so cheap. This product is so easy even for those like myself haven’t got no beauty experience. Thanks qvc for bringing this product, I’d love to win a second one so I can take it to Mencap so I can paint my friends nails. And show them they don’t have to go to a beauty salon for them doing.

Have looked at this with interest for a while. Don’t usually bother with nail polish, seems like alot of effort for a couple of days of nice nails, especially with my 2 gorgeous children (4 & 6 yrs) & all the fun that involves (but not really conducive to nice nails). I wonder, could this be the answer?

LaBoeheme (extract was in Julia Roberts with Richard Gere at the San francisco opera in the movie Pretty Woman. The music is wonderful. Oh, I am no opera expert just like any art form there will is some operas I like and others I don’t La Boheme music is so moving. Happy exploring.

Dear Debbie What a lot of hopeful [& potential] winners you have here! I’m hoping to win the #RedCarpetManicureCompetition too. Ooooooooooh its just starting & there you are.Hooray!Enjoyed it last time.Your sister is so like you & the voice,[understudy?] & I’m so glad she’s not going to bore us with the science!Tanyia knows what she’s doing does’nt she, look at her go.We like easi-pay too.Saw Maxime telling us to “go for the money” to cover up her embarrassment with her bloop[not].You & Antthony together was so funny ,could see you both were really enjoying yourselves, which made it even more amusing.Have entered 1 previous QVC competition which decided not to send ,this didn’t really surprise me as I am a Learner Laptopper, but I was disappointed esp. as I am so slow on the keyboard, time now being 12.26am Bye now, before you’re bored stiff & I’ve missed most of the show.Just heard you say if you’re 1/2 listening which I am,hope you aren’t talking about me,all Ive heard is peals of laughter as usualLinda’s back in 1/2 an hour Goodbye, nail clippers for me not now thanks Lizzy @12.44am X

    Hello Debbie,
my youngest daughter Sally is studying at the guildhall school of music and drama to become an opera singer…. She recommends for new comers to opera to see something by Puccini, either La Boheme or Madame Butterfly. If you want something with a bit more action though she recommends Faust by Gounod.
    Love QVC!!!

Never mind, I love watching QVC, in fact I watch it TOO much, ever since day ONE, when Julia walked out with Jon. Even my Husband will watch some of the programmes, especially the gardening and the cooking. You make me laugh so much – I love being part of it all. I would absolutely love to win the #RedCarpetManicureCompetition so that I could take it with me and treat my daughter, grand-daughter and daughter-in=law to a manicure. My daughter has three children and works part time as a midwife, so doesn’t have much time to do her nails, and my daughter-in law has just given me my fourth grandchild, a baby girl called Samara, so she needs some tlc for all the sleepless nights, and my grand-daughter………..well she’s 21 and I just love her to bits lol. I am a pensioner and my money just doesn’t stretch to buying the RCM, so to win it would really make my day.
Love this latest blog……….you make them so readable.
