A heads up

So (technically) I’m on annual leave, although we haven’t gone away anywhere. We did think about it, but decided instead to have a go at sorting through the vast amount of ‘stuff’ we have accumulated over the years. I wouldn’t say I’m a ‘hoarder’ exactly, but I do keep things that have memories attached for far longer than I should.

Such is the case with my ‘Jolly Green Giant’, Ralph Lauren Polo, puffa jacket.

I originally bought it circa 2000 (no idea of the actual date) to wear to football matches, both Crystal Palace and my son’s various teams. I ended up wearing it season after season as my main coat, because the down filling made it so warm.

Despite being somewhat the worse for wear, I’ve kept it ‘just in case’!

‘Just in case’ what? I hear you ask. Precisely!

So last week, I made the momentous decision to give it to the charity shop, discarding it on the bedroom floor along with other no longer required fashion items. When I had finished sorting through my wardrobe, guess who had decided that it made a very comfy bed?… Wilfie!

It wasn’t until much later in the day, when Wilfie finally moved from his ‘nest’, that I was able to sneak it into the top of the charity bag. So it is now gone, along with trinkets and ornaments collected on holidays down the years, excess mugs, and an ice-cream maker I have never actually used.

The tidying up hasn’t stopped there, I’ve also been sorting through old photos with a view to finally compile albums that can be enjoyed. I have turned up some absolute gems that I will share with you on future blogs.

I’ve also been shredding accounts dating from the late 1990s. It’s actually been quite liberating, but there is still so much more to do – time permitting.

I’ve also needed to find time for a bit of baking. Last year, I reported that my apple tree had produced 22 apples. This year, you can double that, and some!

I’ve already made two apple crumbles (enjoyed with custard) and I’m planning a Dorset Apple Cake next – drooling at the thought!

Apparently Ali Young has also had a bumper crop, which she shared a photo of on Instagram. My Insta is @juliagroberts if you’d like to follow my day to day in pictures. My Twitter and Facebook page are both JuliaRobertsTV.

So, we get to the reason for this impromptu blog. I wanted to give you a ‘heads up’ for the competition I am planning for this Friday’s blog.

QVC will be 24 on Sunday and, whilst sorting out my ‘stuff’, I came across my first ever purchase: a watch (I’ll put a picture of it up on Friday). With that in mind, my competition prize will be a rather gorgeous watch worth almost £200. Check back here on Friday for the full details on how to enter.

So, back to the sorting out (and hopefully a bit of writing).

Much love,
Julia xx

      Hi Mary
There must be something in the air!! Still so much sorting and shredding to do but we are gradually getting there. I’m off now for a week or so but this time I will be relaxing in some Spanish sunshine (hoping for sunshine, never a guarantee in October).

Good luck with the clear out Julia, we have trying for weeks. My husband keeps taking things out of the charity bags. Aah.

      Hi Josephine
The clear out is going well but I must confess I occasionally change my mind about things that I’ve put in bags & boxes for the charity shop. I was quite lucky that my neighbour was looking for stuff for a jumble sale in aid of the scouts so she took stuff away before I could have a second sort through!

      Hi Christine
I think the recipe is on an old blog but if you can’t find it let me know on here and I’ll post it again.
Just part cooked the rest of the apples before freezing so we will be enjoying apple pies well into next month
