A great week so far

I have really enjoyed this week so far and we are already at Friday, albeit Friday the thirteenth. Actually I don't have a problem with Friday the thirteenth, probably as my Mum was born on Friday thirteenth August, and if she hadn't been born neither would I! Maybe you have more of an issue with it??

As I mentioned in last week's blog, Sunday was Sophie's birthday. Apparently, although I don't
remember, I had promised a theatre trip as a celebration, so on Sunday we were on the www looking at the various shows and trying to decide what to go and see. I was quite keen on 'The Jersey Boys', as I've heard great reports about it, but Sophie didn't seem too interested. She really wanted to go and see 'The Lion King' but for some reason it wasn't on on Monday, so, as she had enjoyed the films, we settled on 'Shrek the Musical'.

We had dinner first at a well known pizza chain, where Sophie had a code to get a free bottle of Prosecco for her birthday. It would have been nice, but that particular restaurant didn't have any so offered us all our drinks free instead!!! That was a good start to the evening (hic! – you know how low my alcohol tolerance levels are) followed by a really enjoyable show.

Shrek is on at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane which is a really traditional theatre. I hadn't been there to watch a show since I went with my school to watch 'Gone With the Wind' in 1972!!!! I had been on the stage a few times though for auditions when I was a dancer.

The story was well told, the costumes eye-catching, and the performances from most of the cast were 100% considering it was a Monday night. Shrek was excellent and had some good comedic interaction with donkey. For me though, the two outstanding performances were Lord Farquad (I was wondering how they were going to portray a character of such short stature… ingenious, and possibly quite painful!) and the dragon.

Not only was the dragon well worked both on stage and when it 'flew' through the auditorium, but the vocal was outstanding – definitely the best vocal performance of the night. The only thing I was slightly disappointed with was the lack of any memorable songs, but don't let that put you off, it's definitely worth going to see.

We whet your appetite on QVC with lots of show tickets prior to Christmas – have any of you been yet, and what did you go and see? I am looking forward to going to see 'West Side Story' when it comes into London later in the year.

Tuesday night saw my beloved football team Crystal Palace win the first leg of their Carling Cup semi final against Cardiff. It's only a one goal advantage but I am hopeful of making it to the Wembley final as we have been quite good away from home this season… fingers crossed.

Wednesday saw the launch of Dazzling Druzy that so many of you commented on us wearing – if you ordered some I'd love to know what you think when you get it home. And today I'm working with the lovely Lulu celebrating her 4th Anniversary at QVC.

I hope you have had as enjoyable a week as me and have a great weekend. I'm not on air again until next Thursday, but if you want to find out what I am up to you can follow me on twitter @Julia RobertsQVC

Love Julia x

    Hi Julia
How weird is this…my mum was born on the thirteenth too, but it was in September and on a Wednesday, although with having a birthday on the thirteenth you inevitably have to celebrate it on a Friday at some point.
My mum wasn’t superstitious and I didn’t think I was, but we all say things like ‘fingers crossed’ and ‘touch wood’ etc, so I suppose at times we are a little bit superstitious!
How lucky you were to get your drinks for free with your meal. I very rarely drink and it goes straight to my head and because of medication I had a drink free Christmas and New Year. The last time I was quite merry was at a neighbours party and although I kept asking for a glass of water, it turned out to be wine…it was during the world cup and those noisey trumpet things were doing the rounds. Chris handed it to me, so I took a deep breath and gave it a go, much to everyones surprise, because I’m usually very quiet when I’m out…I think we were the talk of the village for some time after LOL!

    Hello Julia,
Sounds like a good time was had. My daughter and I visited London for Christmas shopping at the beginning of December and saw Shrek the Musical too. It was lovely but I have to say was totally blown out of the water by the second show she had booked for us which was Matilda. It was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone. I would watch it again tomorrow if I had the chance!

I am desperate to get fit and toned and have lost 3 stone so far. I am really worried about toning up to avoid saggy skin as I still have several stone to go.
Please can you let me know when the next Pilates TSV will be on? And what machine it is likely to be?
    Thanks v much

    Hi Julia
Shrek sounds a fun show,i’m glad that you and Sophie enjoyed your meal and show(and all the free drinks – i’m jealousxx). I loved loved loved the dazzling druzy collection – it sparkled so much – my favourite was the platinum(like many others!!) but they were all super – i managed to buy the tsv and matching earrings, they arrived yesterday and are even better looking than they looked on telly,i’m thinking of buying a dazzling druzy ring when next on Q. Congratulations to Palace re their win against Cardiff – one step nearer the cup and a visit to Wembley ehxx I managed to get four Elemis tsv’s last weekend – two hydrating which were delivered this week and two balancing on advanced orders to be delivered around the end of January(spreading the cost makes things a little easier) – it was such great value and as i use all the products it was fabulous value for me – big thanks to Keeley and QVCx I dont usually use the lime blossom cleanser/lavender toner as i associate it with younger more oily skin – whenever i have an Elemis facial they always use the lime blossom/lavender but at home i always use the rose petal/ginseng toner as i’m a woman of a “certain” age(21 again!!- although i gladly admit to 29 at a push ha ha).I’m loving the results i’m getting since using my Clarisonic brush – i thought my skin was clean but since using the brush with my cleansers my skin looks so much brighter and some pigmentation on my neck has reduced and dulled. When Keeley explained about menopausal skin needing balance a light bulb went on in my head so i’m now going to switch between my pro-radiance,rose petal and lime blossom – i havent used the melting cleanser.i heard you say it was one of your favourites, whats the difference between the pro-radiance and melting? I’ve just bought the brights LD TSV this morning – i’m a sucker for makeup/skincare bags(i loved the navy and pink Elemis ones recently)and although i already have some of the colours in the brights i really want the bag – silly – but true.I’m a real beauty junkie – i love all things beauty especially nail colour/care – my OPI/Nails inc and LD colour collection is in the hundreds and i have a great “stock” of treatments etc – love itx By the way – Mac and Mabel are named after the show both my grandparents and parents loved the show and as they are now not with us i thought these were two great names. Lovely to speak to you again Julia – if i ever get the hang of Twitter(i’m following you) i’ll message you on there – whats a hash tag? and is this something i use when messaging you? Hopefully speak on your next blogx Love Linda,Mac and Mabelxxx p.s.my EMU slippers are the best i’ve ever worn – so so cosyx

    Hi Julia,
Sounds like you had a good time celebrating Sophie’s birthday. The musical Shrek sounds really good, have not seen it myself. I have seen the film of Lion King but not the musical. We named to of our dogs from the Lion king, Simba and Zazu. Hope your team makes it to the final.Did watch the Dazzling Druzy show, lovely designs, did not purchase any, maybe next time. Have loved the shows on over the weekend, Leighton Denny, Lola Rose, Emu what more can a girl want. May have to go out with the dogs for a long walk today as I might spend too much if I watch QVC. Hope you have a good break.

    Hi Julia,
I wanted to ask you about Diet Chef. I know you have lost a lot of weight through this regime alongside Pilates. I also do Pilates but must admit over the last few months have gone ito a rut of somewhat and fin dit hard to motivate (lots going on with work and missing my mum terribly after she passed away last year). So much so I have eaten emotionally and gained over a stone. I feel more down than ever now!!! I did try the Paul Mckenna regime a couple of years ago and this did work , I know you wont be able to comment on this, but I now need a quick fix. I have looked at qvc website and the diet chef website and feel it could be something right for me, however, I just need a bit of inspiration that it could work for me! I see everyone else losing weight and looking fab as yourself but just wonder could that be me? I would appreciate it if you could advise which pack to go for, I dont particularly like curries and have looked at the 28day regime. Do you still do the Dietchef?
You are looking great, particularly the arms!
    Very Best wishes
    Jane 🙂

    Hi Linda
I’m wearing my Emu jolie slippers right now and I agree with you they are very cosy!
The Elemis melting cleansing gel is a completely different texture to the pro radiance. When I use pro radiance it is usually in the evening to take off my make-up but I use the melting cleansing gel in the morning. Don’t tell Keeley ( or Ali Young ) but I am not that great at exfoliating regularly so the melting cleansing gel is good for me as it has a slight exfoliation action. You put it on as a gel – it turns to an oily consistency, then you add a bit off water and it goes milky before you rinse off. I don’t use it all the time as I also love the Emma Hardie Balm which I leave on my skin for 15 – 20 minutes on the days I have time for a bit of hydration.
Glad that you are following me on twitter – don’t ask me anything about it though I am a complete novice myself!!!

    Hi Carole
Well done you with the no bread regime. I am on day 7 of my ‘week’ today and I must admit I do find it quite difficult as I LOVE bread. For me I have found that it is a good way to kickstart things and so long as I am watching the rest of what I am eating I don’t really have to ‘diet’ as such to drop a few pounds. When I have finished my bread free week I will go back to my maximum of two slices a day for maintenance.
Hope you enjoy a few more theatre trips this year, there are some good shows about

    Hello Jane
Firstly I am so sorry to hear that you lost your Mum – I know exactly how you feel because I felt the same way when I lost my Dad …. you just kind of feel what’s the point and it’s almost like you are punishing your body for your loss.
I eventually came out of it but it took me two years so don’t be hard on yourself.
Diet Chef was a great start for my weightloss. Because it is sticking to something already measured and prepared it just came down to willpower, and the more I stuck to it and saw the weight coming off the better I felt about myself that I could do it. I used it rigidly for the first month and then just the days I was working ( 4 or 5 a week ) for the second month and then just dipped in and out after that when I needed it. Because you only have a stone to lose it will probably only take you a couple of months, particularly if you get back to regular exercise again. I did Pilates or treadmill everyday for the first month but reduced it to 3 times a week when I was at my goal weight.
I can’t really advise you which Diet Chef to go for as I had no option being a vegetarian but do bear in mind some of the recipes are quite spicy so choose carefully.
You can do it Jane and if I can offer any further help please write again ( and keep me up to date with your weightloss )

    Hi Julia
Yet another coincidence…Baileys, although I didn’t drink at Christmas I did have a couple of coffees with Baileys in mid morning. Oh, I nearly forgot, I also had a snowball, it reminded me of Mum, we always got the snowballs in for her and am I right in thinking it’s one of Ali Young’s drinks too?
Well done you, for resisting the bread…I’ve been making my own since Christmas. Rather than buying loads of bread, I got the old bread machine out…we’re on malted bread at the moment and I use rice bran oil (good for reducing cholesterol) instead of butter for the mix.
I’ve found a really nice treat if you’re on a diet and like dark chocolate. They are organic wafer thin rice cakes with a top coating of Belgian dark chocolate by ‘Hallo’, there’s 8 in a pack and they are about 3″ square and 55 cals each. They’re really scrummy and one is more than enough for that chocolate fix, so I’ve limited myself to one a day.
Keep up the good work in loosing those few pounds.

Ooooops! The biscuits are by ‘Kallo’ and not ‘Hallo’ and I got them from a well know supermarket beginning with ‘S’.
Also, I meant to ask you if you saw Darcey Bussell Dances Hollywood…it was fantastic to watch the transition from a ballet dancer, always using her toes, to a tap dancer mainly using toes and heels. She recreated a couple of numbers from Top Hat and Singin in the Rain. Did you know that Fred Astaire was a drummer and there is a clip of him on Youtube dancing and drumming at the same time…maybe you and Chris could do a little routine. Only joking!

As I mentioned previously on your blog, we went to see Jersey Boys as part of Chris’ 40th birthday celebrations last year. I thought it was brilliant though, admittedly, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it beforehand. See, I do indulge “long suffering Chris” every now and again, lol!
Are you gonna tell us which restaurant it was that didn’t have the Prosecco so we can all go and bag some free drinks??!! I need to make up for new years eve, lol again!
‘Gone with the Wind’ is my Mum’s all time favourite film. She’s lost count of the number of times she’s seen it. Of course, it was all because of Rhett Butler who I suppose was the olden day version of Johnny Depp or Dale Franklin!!
You are quite right that the Dazzling Druzy pendant is far more dazzling in the flesh, it’s gorgeous. And, you can never get enough Elemis Julia! Are you at the Beauty bash on 26th?

Checked back but no reply to first question yet. However, there is something else I would like to ask as well.I purchased a bracelet quite a number of years ago from qvc by Butler and Wilson (before my son was born and he’s eleven now). Unfortunately the metal tab adhered to the inside of the bracelet, with the Butler and Wilson logo on, has since fallen off. As you do many shows with Simon Wilson I wondered if it would be possible for you to find out if this can be replaced since, obviously, this sets it apart from just any bracelet, if you know what I mean.

    Hello Julia,
Love watching you on QVC, at the moment we are living in Germany and we can get Sky so I can watch QVC. My mother was also born on Friday 13th (Nov 1942), like you I have no problem with this day especially with my mother having passed away 30 years ago.
    Take care.
