A first for me

I’m sure many of you will have tried detoxing before, as a way to cleanse your body after the excesses of Christmas and New Year, but, I must confess, I never have.

As a vegetarian, I have a pretty healthy diet most of the time and have never really felt the need to detox, but I have been persuaded otherwise by one of the guests I am working with on Monday at midday.

Christianne Wolff - 704286Funnily enough, I bought Christianne Wolff‘s first book around this time last year after Catherine Huntley had seen such spectacular results following her weight loss programme.

Although I tried a few of the recipes, I didn’t really feel inspired enough to do the whole program (including the detox) although I did find a lot of useful information about why certain foods are good or bad for your body. Instead, I followed a weight loss program of my own, and lost a stone in the run up to my 60th birthday last year. I was feeling pretty fit and healthy last summer and then ‘toegate’ happened!

You may remember I stubbed my toe really badly on a solid oak coffee table, and wasn’t able to wear shoes for six weeks. I was in quite a lot of pain, so even the thought of working out in the gym made me feel sick. The trouble is, once you get out of the habit of doing something, it’s really hard to get started again.

November morphed into December and, with the run up to Christmas, I never seemed to find time (or the inclination, if I’m honest) to get back on my pilates machine and my other pieces of fitness equipment – they lay dormant in the gym at the bottom of my garden.

With the New Year came a new determination to get back in the gym and try to eat a little more healthily but I knew I would have to try a little harder to shift the weight I have gained. So, as I’m working with Christianne on Monday, I decided to give her latest detox, ‘The Body Rescue Plan‘, a go and try to kickstart my healthy eating again.

I’m not going to lie, in the first few days it is really hard: finding things that don’t involve cooking with small quantities of oil or butter; having rice, bulgar or quinoa with curries; and not being able to start my day with porridge.

I’m not a massive fan of smoothies as a meal replacement either, particularly in the winter! But I will stick to it in the hope that, once I get into week two and will be permitted a few more of the things I’m used to, it will be easier.

Fortunately, ‘him indoors’ is doing it too, so that does make things a little more bearable. His favourite things (as mentioned before) are red wine, coffee, and cheese – none of which are permitted – so I keep reminding myself that he is probably struggling more than me.

It was pretty bad luck, though, to have the Godminster cheeses on the Lunchtime Show today and not be able to taste them… typical! Both Claire Sutton and I bought them for our other halves for Valentine’s Day last year.

Philip Kingsley Coconut Breeze Elasticizer - 229092Speaking of today’s Lunchtime Show, we had the new Beauty Product of the Month, the latest fragrance (Coconut Breeze) of Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer in the one litre size with free P&P.

It only launched three days ago and already 4,000 have sold. If you haven’t seen it yet, do join me for a full hour of PK on Sunday at 3pm.

Well, I’m delighted to report that my football team, Crystal Palace, have finally had their first win under new manager Sam Allardyce, and have signed four new players in the January transfer window!

Hopefully this is a sign of better things to come, as we are currently still in the relegation zone. Thank goodness there are still three months of the season to go!

Just a reminder that, from today, Fashion on Friday will be repeated on the QVC Style Channel at 7pm so,if you always miss the first part of the show due to not being home from work in time, you’ve now got a second opportunity to see it. Today it is Isaac Mizrahi Live with the stylish Glen Campbell with some gorgeous pieces, I love the textures of this denim jumper waistcoat and it’s available in Black, Blue and Green.

Isaac Mizrahi Live - 161397

Hope to see lots of you over the weekend and next week, and then I have a couple of weeks’ holiday from QVC. I need some sunshine, but have nothing booked yet… any last minute holiday ideas would be appreciated.

As always, check my website www.juliarobertsauthor.com for my latest book news – I published a new blog this week and announced you could win luxury chocolates for Valentine’s Day if you signup to my newsletter on there.

Have a great weekend,
Julia x

    Hi Julia
I am not keen on smoothies, they are telling you now too much sugar doing it that way, cannot win, so I just try to eat some more fruit.
That’s great you have Christianne working with you on a Monday, I bought her book last time it was on QVC and at the minute I am just dipping in and out of it trying to get to grips with it, and yes Catherine Huntley is looking amazing as is Kathy Taylor as well, so it definitely works, lovely recipes as well.
    Take care

      Hi Elizabeth
I think it is more juices that we are being advised to avoid. Smoothies have the whole fruit or vegetable just mashed down.
It was a very tough first week, especially as a veggie, but stuck with it, and week 2 is easier and it appears to be working for me too.

Hi Julia I am off to Lanzarote next week, its a lovely island especially if you like walking as its quiet flat along the coast, its a great destination at this time of year very sunny and warm might be worth a visit! I have been trying to lose some weight I started going to a slimming club (one I have been to before very successfully) but only managed to lose half a stone before my holiday, I really wanted to lose a stone! still may try something else when I get back, have a lovely week. love Linda xx

      Hi Linda
I hope you have a fabulous time in Lanzarote. We took the children there when they were little in the February half term and we had lots of warm sunshine, although it was a little windy.
I’m now on week 2 of the detox plan and it is much easier. I’m only wanting to lose a stone in total as I don’t want to look too scraggy at my age, but I think this plan is also about cleansing the body too. It seems to be working thankfully

Hi Julia Good luck with plan. I don’t think I could detox like that. Really have been good over January no biscuit etc healthy smoothes. And walking the dog and Pilates. And when spring and summer comes gardening is good excercise. Think is hard to get weight off as we get older. Some people are lucky not to put weight.

    Take Care X

      Hi Christine
I do think it is much easier to lose weight in the summer when it’s warmer and we’re all more active. Well done on ditching the biscuits – it’s so easy for one to turn into three or four!
I agree it’s harder to get the pounds off as we get older but we’ll do it! And Pilates is great for keeping us supple.

I am also trying the body resue plan from next week.I hope you have good sucess with it and acheive your desired goal.I think my main struggle is to go without tea.Is it possible to ask Christianne a few queries regarding the diet
1 Could we have pulses and white meat as well.Or is it one of the two.?
2 I know of a indIan receipe that involves soaking green gram ( moong) and grinding it to a paste with ginger anf garlic and chillies and using the batter to make savory pancakes.Would that be permissible in this diet plan.
3 Is decaf tea or coffee okay on this diet?
    4 Do we count calories?
5 Does white meat include chicken.?
JULIA it would be great if you are able to help by clariifying my queries during your show with Christianne.I am inspired to try this programme based on reviews and hope to get similar results.

      Hi Marina
Unfortunately I saw this after I worked with Christianne.
I don’t think you can have pulses & white meat in week 1 – either or.
      White meat includes chicken
      You don’t count calories
I can’t help with the other two queries I’m afraid.
If you do try it, I hope it works for you

Good luck with the Body Rescue Plan. I have just started and I am on day 6 and feeling really well with bags of energy as well as losing 5lbs already

    • Julia Roberts February 10, 2017 at 11:13 am -  Reply

      Hi Stephanie
I certainly felt a lot better after the first three days when I was totally lethargic – unusual for me as I normally have bags of energy. I’ve lost three pounds in the first week but I’m happy with that.
      Keep up the good work

Good luck with Body Rescue Plan . I am starting week 5 and have lost a stone, feel amazing and the main thing I do not want to eat all the bad stuff anymore and believe me I used to eat lots of it before.

    • Julia Roberts February 10, 2017 at 11:16 am -  Reply

Thanks Jenny. It sounds like you are getting on really well with the plan and it’s great that you don’t want to go back to your old ways – mindset and all that!
I know I will take some of the good habits on board although I can’t promise I’ll never cook another chocolate birthday cake or go out for pizza.
      Stick with it

      Hi Beverley,
I don’t expect you to keep tabs on Crystal Palace and I’ll accept the congratulations for the Bournemouth game.
I hope you’re right about Big Sam. Apparently they’ve had their 4 day training camp in Dubai cancelled – quite right too!
I’m looking forward to my time off – lots of writing and a bit if R&R

    Hi Julia
Well done you for taking the bull by the horns and starting your detox and exercise again, but how spooky is that, you with your toe injury and me with my hand surgery, both on the run up to Christmas and unable to exercise.

I have just finished my Pilates, so cooling down at the moment, then off to have my homemade muesli with almond milk and glass of water. You are so lucky having Chris doing the detox with you, making it much easier together. Although I’m not going down ‘The Body Rescue Route’, just being sensible, my Chris is a very picky eater, he loves his desserts, cakes and biscuits, anything sweet really, so it can be very hard at times, especially when he walks in with a pack of egg custards, a great deal of willpower on my part. My favourite drink at the moment is Decaff Green Tea with Jasmine, I really look forward to a cup at lunch time, is that sad or what?!
Keep up the good work, both of you!

      Hi Annette
I must admit I didn’t feel much like exercising on the first week of the detox, particularly the first few days but my energy levels have picked up again now. My problem is time – I’m heads down working on the next book – 8000 words this past weekend – so breaking off when in full flow for 45 minutes of Pilates is not ideal!
Chris has been supportive although a bit grumpy – his coffee ‘cheat’ helps.
      Speak soon

Hi Julia, i did post on Baby it’s cold blog.. you must have missed it.!
Good luck with your Detox plan , i have done the 7 day detox, my hairdresser has a book and she printed off the items i wanted.. works well. Of course smoothies twice a day instead of meals you will lose weight as i have and even after the 7 day one feel loads better. We have booked 2 weeks in Barbados March/ April before it gets to humid.. Have you decided yet on a destination. Enjoy any way.

      Hi Kathy
Sorry I missed your post on Baby It’s Cold Outside – I must admit I don’t often look back on blogs looking for replies unless my copy editor alerts me to them.
Christianne’s detox is a little different from most with more ‘solid’ food but it is working. I think weight loss is slower if you don’t have so much to lose but I’m happy with my progress.
Hope you have a lovely holiday in March – all I can say is snap
