A cap and a gown… and a ring!

It’s been a big few weeks for my daughter Bex. She has completed her medical degree and is now officially Dr Rebecca Olley IBSc (Hons) MBBS!

photo 3 cropWe had the excitement of attending her Graduation Ceremony this week, which was held at the Royal Festival Hall on Southbank in London. It was an inspiring and moving occasion with almost 350 young doctors acknowledged as being part of the future of medicine in this country and abroad, having studied at University College London and in several London hospitals for the last six years. They each had a few seconds of their own as they crossed the stage to the applause of the audience – I managed to catch the moment on my phone!

It’s hard to believe that student life is now over for Bex – it seems to have been almost endless! But come the end of July she will be on the hospital wards as a junior doctor. She’s very excited and totally ready for the next stage of her life as a professional medic, but there’s great news in her personal life too.

the happy couple

Her lovely boyfriend Dan proposed to her a couple of weeks ago (after a phone call to Olley to ask for her hand in marriage) and they’ve already set the date for the weekend before Christmas. “Why hang around when you know it’s what you want to do?” says the ever-practical bride-to-be. So there’ll be lots of planning, decision making and list writing in the coming weeks!

photo 2 cropThey are so happy together and haven’t stopped grinning since Dan put a beautiful solitaire diamond ring in romantic rose gold on Rebecca’s finger. All you really want for your children is for them to find happiness. For Bex, at the moment, I couldn’t hope for more.

I hope the sun is shining on you, too.

Take care

Kathy x

Hi Kathy. Congratulations to your daughter on her graduation and engagement, exciting times ahead. My godson graduated as a doctor 2 years ago and is now deciding his specialism having completed some surgical exams. I admire the way he has embrassed the continual training and learning and I fully appreciate the commitment all our doctors, young and old, give us. He is going to work in plastic surgery for a year then move on to radiology; his fiancée is in her final months of qualifying as a GP. Happy times for all. By the way you looked stunning at both the graduation and Ali K’s wedding. Much love Mary x

Hello Kathy, Many congratulations to you all; the obvious and justified pride you have for all your children shines from you. There are lots of occasions in life that have that golden glow to them and graduations are definitely on that list for me and now you have a wedding to be part of and being mother of the bride is wonderful. Four years our beautiful older daughter, also Bex, got married – it was a small and stylish affair and she was a splendiferous bride. We will be doing it all again just before Christmas when our younger and equally beautiful daughter has her wedding. This time it will be a larger event and Ellie, who is a very creative girl, has planned a fairytale day. As you said all you want is for your children to find happiness – exciting times and a lovely blog. Love from Jo x
