I’m feeling rather embarrassed about what I’m going to tell you, having been off work this year with a heavy dose of ‘flu and more recently after a knee operation. But I’m off again, this time fully planned and looked forward to!
My husband Olley is now retired after over 50 years as a successful – and very busy – press and celebrity photographer (he started young…!) ,and we have decided that it would be good to spend a little more time together. Never a better time than now as, even as a committed traveller, I firmly believe that when summer does finally arrive in the UK, there is nowhere in the world better to enjoy it than home!
We will head off to explore other places as well and I fully intend to relax and enjoy one of longest times I’ve had without working (except when the children were born) since I started my first job in live television, a BBC children’s sports programme called Stopwatch in the summer of 1983. I have a photo of me with Suzanne Dando learning to windsurf for the series. Well… falling off a windsurfer!
As you can see, our youngest – Billy, the last to be living at home with us – is a lot more at home on the water. It will seem very peacefulthis summer as we have just him on a plane to America.
He is heading to a summer camp in Pennsylvania where he will be teaching magic to some of the children and leading and looking after a group of 8-year-olds. We’ll miss him, as will his girlfriend Sherilyn, but I’m sure he will have a fantastic time – he loves to be with people and to amaze them and make them laugh with his card tricks. He’s always been a bit of an action man too, and will enjoy all the sporting opportunities that he’ll have there.
Hopefully he’ll meet up with lots of like-minded young people and create friendships for life. His visa allows him to stay for a month after camp to explore the country and we plan to join him there in September to celebrate his 21st birthday.
I’m really excited for him and proud of him, and I’ve been looking through some of my photos of him as he has grown from a skinny little kid to a young man who towers over me and thought I’d share some with you. The one feature common to almost every photo is his enormous smile – let’s hope he has reason to use it plenty in the coming months.
I hope this finds you smiling too!
I’ll be back at QVC at the beginning of August so until then, do take care.
Best wishes to you
