Music to get Married to…

Ok, so 16 years ago, on September 25th Dan and I were married! The best ever day and 16 years on I am still so grateful we share our life together. The vicar asked me what it was that I loved about Dan and well, aside from his obviously rather delicious exterior, (not the vicars words I hasten to add) I remember saying

“He is just everything I am not. He is kind, caring, strong, gentle and the perfect calming balance to my slightly mad side.” Not that I’m not kind etc., but it just felt that he was the perfect fit , it’s hard to put it into words.

Anyway the reason for this blog is that whilst a lovely camera man from QVC filmed our wedding it has languished for 16 years in the bottom drawer unedited and is still in the original Betacam form, unwatched and unshared. I have thought each year that I must do it as a surprise for Dan, and our families, but each year has come and gone until now.

So my question to you all is what music shall I choose to have as the background? Do I go traditional or do I look at 1999, the year of our wedding, and see what ballads and romantic tracks were part of our lives then? Or do I  use our first dance music which was Paul Weller’s ‘You Do Something To Me’  (bearing in mind the actual first dance was ‘Love Shack’ by the B52’s – which I don’t think will be very appropriate!). Dan loves Stevie Wonder, I’m partial to an Anita Baker song or two and I know the track ‘Wings’ by Birdie, currently used for the Lloyds Bank advert, makes us both pause and look.

I’m really unsure and I could do with your input as I can’t ask the person who usually helps me when I’m in a quandary, as it’s meant to be a surprise for him!

He will be away this weekend so my plan is to get a wriggle on and try my best to put the prep in so I can give him the finished DVD on our actual anniversary.  I don’t half leave things till the last minute – please help!

Much Love Claire x

Oh Claire, what an enjoyable task for you. Well, my thoughts on this would be to have – firstly, both your favourite songs – then it has to be something from the year you were married don’t you think?

Actually my husband and I are in the process of putting together some music for our 25th Wedding celebration with the family, so I know where you are coming from. Good luck with it all and have fun choosing.

Oh Claire what a lovely idea and I know exactly where you are coming from. By putting it on a DVD you will probably watch more often and especially with your children. I think you should stick to songs from 1999 and of course add a song that each of you like. I also think music on its own is lovely on videos especially through the start of the ceremony itself while you see the bride getting ready and the groom and the guests arriving at the church something like panpipes or like you said the Lloyds tune. I myself like Scottish pipe and accordion music. Good luck and I think Dan will love his thoughtful anniversary gift. Oh and Happy Anniversary on the 25th. x

    Hi Claire,

Music eh?? Traditional you could perhaps have ‘Morning’ by Greig playing in the background or something a little more modern, say ‘Perfect day’ by Lou reed or even have this piece played by Andre Rieu ‘You Raise Me Up’

Either way, i’m sure you’ll sort it out. May you have many more happy years together.

Lots of love & best wishes to you & Dan (not forgetting the children) of course.

    Davina xxx

Claire I think your first dance music would be very apt. What a lovely thing to do,
my husband and I have been married 36 years this year and we only had still photos
of our wedding so the video is a lovely idea, also your children will enjoy seeing
both of you getting married, a lovely thing to hold onto.

    Kind regards

    Hi Claire
It just doesn’t seem like 16 years ago… We can’t really be that old can we 😉
I think you really have to have your first dance, but why not have a montage of different songs that hold meaning… Or At Last by ETA James, dual meaning at last you had your man, and at last the video is done.

    Hi Claire, what a lovely idea. My choice of music would be as follows;

    1) AS: By Stevie Wonder
    2) Love No limit: By Mary J Blige
    3) I Swear: By Babyface
    4) Change the world: By Erick Clapton and Babyface

    Good Luck
    Jennifer X

    PS Love your wedding dress.

Dear Clare, I think the most appropriate music would be, the music from your your first dance, and also any other special song or music that was special to you both from that era, any modern day music just wouldn’t really be fitting, it must be something that made you both look at each other and smile every time you heard it, and probably gave you goosepimples when you heard it, good luck and please can we watch the video when it’s finished too, that would be great. xxxxx

Hi Claire. What a really lovely idea. My husband and I were also married on September 25th but 39 years ago. Goodness that sounds ancient. I would start the dvd with a hymn from your service. Then perhaps your wedding dance and to finish The twelfth of never by Johnny Mathis. A large box of tissues might be handy too. I’m sure whatever you choose your hubby will love it. Take care and happy anniversary to you both.

Hi Claire, have a listen to Diana Ross’ ‘All of My Life’ on YouTube if you get time. For me the lyrics would have to say just as much as the music. Volume of this song turned down low in the background would be perfect (well, for me anyway).

You looked absolutely stunning by the way – GORGEOUS.

I’m sure Dan will love whatever you choose, but get them tissues ready xxxxx

Hi Claire. I celebrated my 19th Wedding anniversary on 24th August; we had our wedding video put on CD last year but kept all the original speaking and conversation.. Our usher did the video; hubby and gang on the golf course in the morning then popping up at my mum’s filming me practically getting dressed.. Ha ha..the conversations and memories especially of my dad who died two years ago..its a great memory but played to the kids St quick speed in parts cos they were getting bored. We had Love Shack to…the men were on the tables dancing!!II I think you need to pick your favourite songs that mean something to each of or slow..Have fun deciding!! The kids could each choose a track to make it a real family affair! Love Mary x

Hi Claire, what a lovely way to spend the day. As everyone else has said. Music should evoke memories of both the special day but also where appropriate, songs from the last 16 years. You have both been through so much with a growing family and different challenges. Go with your “gut feeling”. Songs that “say” something to you both. At the end of the day this is going to be a soundtrack to not only your wedding day but the time since. Beautiful day is a the fantastic start . Good luck and let us know what you choose. Listen to the words. Stevie Wonder ”
I just called to say I love you must be in there somewhere.
    Much love

Most defnitely Paul Weller’s ” You do something to me” and another song which many forget they did but the words are beautiful… Genesis “Follow you, Follow me” first line..Take my hand…… and anything by Stevie Wonder….. and include a song from your actual day to link everything together…. Enjoy xx

Hello Claire. if I’m not too late with my suggestion, how about ‘Amazed’ by Lonestar?
As a DJ, I always play it for the first dance at weddings if the couple don’t have anything in mind and it always make me feel very emotional. Listen to the words, it’s on Utube.
    Good Luck

Hi lovely Claire I too love your wedding dress and you looked stunning. I lost my partner five years ago at the age of 52, we had been together 17 years and I loved him deeply. He too is my soul mate and he is also the love of my life. If I had the chance to be making a video like you are doing for me it would have to be Meghan Trainor’s ” Like I’m Gonna Loose You”. I know the title sounds a little depressing but it’s not and If you haven’t heard it then please give it a try I think it has beautiful lyrics . Good Luck with your video I’m sure whatever you choose it will be wonderful. My only other suggestions are “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You by Rod Stewart or ” Better” which is by Boyzone I think.. CONGRATULATIONS! and big hugs XX

Hi Claire, I love your blogs. I’m pleased you chose the picture of the pebbles with the heart, it’s a special pic. Anyway , I think you should have a medley of songs which are special to you , the ones you mentioned. in my wedding video, 31 years ago , I had one song playing all the way through ! After an hours viewing got quite annoying and felt like I wanted to strangle the guitarist ! Lol. ! Keep it interesting with a variety of tunes you both can relate to !
Take care , look forward to your next blog 16 years! Can’t believe it , I’ve been shopping that long on QVC lol XXX
