Marla Wynne GinsbergHow did you get started as a designer?

In 2008, after 20 years as a television producer with shows like The Highlander and La Femme Nikita to my credit, came a six month writers strike. As a single mom with two kids, time on my hands and a mortgage on my back I decided that maybe I should consider what else I could do with my life.

At 52, I felt the prospects of finding a post-strike job were about as likely as finding a natural blonde in Beverly Hills so I decided to reinvent myself by combining my creativity and passion for clothes. The only problem was that I knew nothing about sewing or design.

I bought a sewing machine, lots of sketch paper and turned my garage into a literal sweat shop! Day and night I sketched and I sewed. I threw a lot in the bin, but I kept at it. It's been a bumpy road and the learning curve has been very steep, but in the four years since I launched the brand, it has been growing steadily, the opportunity to be on QVC UK is an exciting one and I can't wait!

Fashion designsWhat is your design philosophy?

The MarlaWynne team believes…

… in healthy living, having fun, frozen yogurt and chardonnay
… you should embrace your shape and follow your curves
… every woman is unique
… comfort should never be at the expense of fabulous
… clothes should enhance our best qualities and cover our 'icky bits'
… there is such a thing as “age appropriate”
… if you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun
… word of mouth is everything
… in the wow factor!

Fashion showWhat kind of women do you design for?

I design for women like myself. Active, busy and engaged women who want to look and feel great but age appropriate. We want clothes that fit our changing bodies and our lifestyles. We want to be fashionable without looking like we are trying to be our daughters.

We come in all shapes and sizes and I try to create pieces with a certain flow and what I hope is a certain elegance that covers the 'icky bits' and flatters a woman’s best qualities. Never frumpy and always elegant but with ease and comfort.

I recently had my first fashion show in New York which included models from age 18-80. It was so exciting to see women of all ages wearing my designs (including my wonderful daughter, Sydney Claire)!

Marla Working In GarageWhat trends do you like at the moment?

I don’t really believe in following trends I believe in personal style. Trends are in this year and out the next, designed to motivate purchasing versus building a wardrobe, which is what MarlaWynne is all about.

I want to be a part of a woman’s life through her wardrobe, making her feel great about herself and her individuality. I want her to lovingly embrace her curves and feel comfortable in the skin she is in. I work with neutral palettes that easily mix and match in silhouettes that are simple, chic and elegant.

I like a bit of flow around the tummy and sleeves to conceal those wobbly bits on the upper arm. I want my collections to serve as a canvas for a woman’s favourite accessories.

If she wants 'this year's colour' an inexpensive scarf or a handbag will do the trick. I try to create fashionable and seasonless solution dressing that fit and flatter the mature woman without making her look pregnant or frumpy. After all, if it fits and flatters it’s always in style!
