Wholly Unacceptable!!!

Holes in Julia's top Or maybe that should be 'holey' unacceptable!! The weirdest thing keeps happening to my T-shirts. After just one wash, a series of holes appear near the lower edge at the front and I have no idea why?

It wouldn't be so strange if they were all bought from the same manufacturer but they aren't. I don't wear belts so nothing has rubbed against the fabric to cause the holes… it's truly really weird.

Has this happened to any of you, or do you have any ideas what could be causing it? I did wonder if it was the washing machine, but the holes are always in the same position on each T-shirt and it hasn't happened to anyone else in the family. Any suggestions please?

I hope you all enjoyed the Annalee + Hope range that I highlighted in my blog last week? I've got a few pieces now and am really looking forward to Kimberley's next visit in July. More fashion on QVC today with Michele Hope – really pretty Today's Special Value.

Speaking of TSVs, as I am sitting writing this I can hear Sophie upstairs on the Aeropilates machine which is our TSV this Sunday. When she vacates it, I'll be getting on and then possibly Daniel later. I have been asked a lot about my weightloss and the tone of my arms and I truly attribute most of it to the Aeropilates (along with a sensible eating plan, of course). If you are wondering if it would be the right machine for you, then ring in with your questions at midnight on Saturday – still plenty of time to shape up for the summer holidays.

We've also got a gorgeous Tanzanite TSV on Monday, which I was flashing around on air last night and will continue to wear over the weekend and then on Tuesday it's Smashbox – sometimes I REALLY look forward to going into work!

Have a great weekend,
Love Julia xx

    Hi Julia
I have had the same problem regarding the holes in my washing! Its soooo frustrating!
I contacted the washing machine manufacturer who sent out an engineer and he advised that sometimes clothes that are fragile and lightweight can get pushed and trapped through the holes in the drum during a high spin cycle and this can cause holes in he fabric. He advised low spin cycles for these items.
He also changed 3 plastic things that are attached to the inside of the drum in my machine (sorry I don’t know the correct name!) as he said when they become loose, sometimes clothes can get caught on them and cause damage to clothes.
I havent had any problems since and make sure as an extra precauction that all my lightweight clothes go into a zip up laundry bag just in case! I have quite a collection of these bags now!!
Hope that helps and good luck.
    Best wishes
    Yasmin x

    Hi Julia
The same thing happens to me and it’s the zip on your jeans. Never trousers as these are not metal.
I really wish I could have a Pilates machine but living in a flat I do not have the room. However I do mat pilates and find it makes you feel so much better. What Marjolien needs to devise is a fold up machine then maybe I could use it.
Look forward to seeing the shows.
    Love from Joy xx

    Hi Julia
I have exactly the same problem with light weight fabrics, it also happened a few years ago with my last washing machine, I complained to the manufacturer and they told me that I shouldn’t put light weight fabrics on a fast spin (why build machines that have a fast spin then!) it got to be a really heated debate with them, they then tried to tell me it had nothing to do with the machine but something i was doing (obviously getting up in the night and putting holes in clothes!). So I said fine, bring your washing round to my house and prove it……they replaced the machine.

    Hi Julia
I get the same problem, and I found that it only happens with one pair of jeans I have which has 2 metal buttons. The buttons are not flat, so I think it happens when I am washing up and standing near the sink !!
The fabric must wear on the buttons and make these tiny holes. I have found the answer tho – try to avoid washing up as much as possible or stand 2 inches away from the work top !!
Let us know how you get on…

Could be from your car seat belt causing friction on the fabric. I have absolutely no idea where that came from, as im no expert on fabric, and I dont even drive, but it just flashed in front of my eyes, spooky!!!!!!!

    Hi Julia,
Do you have a granite worktop in your kitchen. I also had similar holes and realized when I stand at the sink my t-shirts rubbed against the metal button on my jeans, causing holes in the t-shirt.
I thought I had a really bad case of moths at first!
Best of luck with your problem

  10. Anna May 14, 2011 at 11:06 am -  Reply

I have found holes in my clothes which, rather disgustingly, were caused by moths and carpet beetles; but seeing as your holes are always in the same place on your tops, might I suggest that they could be caused by your car seatbelt rubbing against them whilst you are driving? I know mine has an annoying little plastic button on it to stop it from going too far through the buckle – this always catches on my clothes and I became so worried about it damaging them that I now pull my tops out over the top of the seatbelt!!
I hope you find an answer to you holey mystery!

That is so strange. I have had the same thing happen to me. Only on things made from the same fabric. It happened on some leggings and a nightie. They were all made from Modal or viscose/cotton. Usually t-shirt like material. I have no idea what causes it but it is so annoying. Maybe it’s something in the washing liquid or powder that attacks the fibres. Very mysterious.
Will be watching some of the Pilates shows. Still using my Spacemate and loving it. Hopefully one day i will have the space for a machine but untill then, it’s Spacemate and cycling for me.
I thought the Analee and Hope range was great, especially the tops. I ordered the animal print one that had the “V” front and back.
    Looking forward to Smashbox too.
PS. Loved the shows with Simon Wilson the other week. You two are so funny together.

    Hi Julia
I’ve experienced this problem to? I put it down to the strength of my washing tabs/Oxi clean or fabric softener but i have not been able to prove this theory because,as you say, there is no rhyme nor reason, for the damage(different materials and manufacturers)as well as it happening to some clothing and not others – i know you have said in the past about you having sensitive skin and so i would imagine you would be using a gentle product(s) or maybe the wash balls? which would make the damage even more of a mystery eh!!If you find an answer please tell us in your next blog – i thought i was the only one this happened too but from the other comments and your blog i’m clearly not. I’m keeping up with my Sumba/Aeropilates routine as well as a “reasonably” healthy eating plan – i say reasonably because a couple of Thorntons Viennese truffles had the cheek to pop themselves into my mouth and i felt obliged to eat them the other night – i know – Thorntons choccies will not allow me to lose the middle age spread but everything in moderation, its just that its hard to be moderate with Thorntons choccies!! I’m loving the Sumba workout – the music is so uplifting and i really feel it working the problem areas – my mood is uplifted even if my hips/waist are not reduced. I’m really looking forward to watching Marjolein(weekend) and the Smashbox(Tues) team again.I’m loving your straight hair look again – it really suits you. Look after yourself. Love LindaX

I used to get this problem all the time, it drove me mad as I ruined so many tops and however you stitch it you can always see it but since doing the following it seems to have stopped
    * I place a strip of tissue over my trouser zip, under the flap.
    * Always pull my tops up over my seatbelt when driving.
    * Never put things with zips etc in the wash with my tops.
Seem a bit over the top I know but it works, no more ruined tops are worth it xxx

I tried to contact Marjolin via her website but can’t find a direct link to her only customer services. Hope you can help me!

I also get holes – but not anymore – have worked it out – its from 2 certain pairs of jeans – the metal button causes the holes when I have my seat belt on and it rubs the button on the fabric.
If I wear the jeans but don’t drive it never happens.

    Hi Julia,
This has nothing to do with wholly tee-shirts. I just wanted to mention about the pill-ates machine that I have been using. Last year i hurt my back and have two slipped discs but when I went for an MRI scan they found that I had an osteophyte which is a tiny bone growth that forms along the joints. I had been in agony and it was because of this growth trapping my sciatic nerve. Even up until six months ago I was using two walking sticks to get around and couldn’t even get to bed upstairs. My surgeon wants to operate to remove this growth. I can’t tell you how much this frightened me,I mean back surgery is a pretty major thing !! So I decided I would be more intense with my Pill ates machine and in fact emailed Marjolen for some advice which she wrote back to me and gave me some stretches to do. I also devised my own routine and every single day for one hour plus I do my pill-ates. I am now six months down the line,I no longer use walking sticks,I CAN climb the stairs to bed and am also back on the treadmill. I know for a fact that if it hadn’t been for my pill-ates machine I would most definitely 100% been in a wheel chair by now. And although I might still have to go for surgery(I am trying desperately not to have it) my quality of life is without doubt better than I ever expected
After watching the launch of the machine last night I just felt I had to share my story ,and anyone who is dithering about this machine can take it from someone who knows it is a life changing routine and works 100% guaranteed!!!
Many thanks and I am sorry if I have gone on,and on,and on…lol I am very passionate about pill-ates.

Loved the Pilates TSV and the shows with you and Marjolein. After watching these shows, I decided to buy the TSV yesterday, but hope I have done the right thing as began to have doubts when the TSV sold out and I saw the more deluxe machine with the bigger seat and wondered if I should have bought that one with 4 cords and bigger all round. Hope I did not buy too soon, but will give the TSV a try and see if it is ok for me. I am 60 and not very fit and have a very dodgy right knee as a result of a nasty fall 3 years ago so unable to do impact exercises, hence my purchase of the Pilates machine which I thought would be ideal to help me. Grateful for your advice re the two machines. Very impressed with your body changes and weight loss so well done and many congratulations. Many thanks, Sue

Still there’s always next year to look forward to. I see you have received many replies about the holes in your t-shirts but i also think it could be the zips on your jeans which could be the culprits as this happened to my daughter too. By the way i am not the Susan Wright you went to school with although we are just about the same age. I will now lock my computer away for the rest of my holiday and will not listen or watch any more football! Hi Julia
I have the same problem with my t-shirts, which I hang up in the wardrobe and have put it down to maybe a little moth getting inside, or wondering if it could be sequins catching from other t-shirts?
Talking of sequins, I have just received my very first B&W purchase, the square sequined top (148445). I opted for the peacock version, because of the colours and the ‘eyed feathers’. The one received is totally different, not a full picture of a peacock, but just a very large head of a peacock and the background is mainly bright green with a couple of eyed feathers…can’t quite make my mind up at the moment, not the colours I would have gone for…you’d certainly see me coming LOL!
Other than that it is very well made and to get the sequins printed in such a way…I should imagine they are printed in one large sheet and then punched out…maybe a question to ask Simon, would be interested to know?

may be different for others, but i found the holes stopped appearing in my washing, when i turned the spin speed down

was catching the clothes and making these holes.

    Hi Julia,
I, like Maria and other girls have found that it happens when standing at the sink or preparing food , the fabric is between the work surface and a button or belt, I have cursed when this happens with a brand new top and I have not been careful enough to lift the top above the top of my trousers.
When it first happened I thought it was my neighbours cigarette ash blowing on my washing, but like you I had to investigate further.
    Hope this helps.
    Love Sue.

Just to let you know that I have asked Marjolein a question and thanked her for speaking to me and she very kindly emailed back within minutes.
Some of the exercises involve sitting sideways with legs crossed or kneeling, neither of which I can do because of the steelwork and I can’t stick my legs straight out because of space. She suggested feet on floor and knees bent for the side abs, which seems to work. Funny how I couldn’t think of a question when you asked!

We do have granite worktops but as I explained in a previous reply I don’t do much cooking or cleaning wearing trousers that would cause friction when leaning against the work surface. It didn’t happen with longer T shirts worn with leggings so jeans and car seatbelts may be the culprits ….. don’t think it’s moths!

EEK – what are carpet beetles?? They sound horrible. I don’t think it’s critters, I am starting to think that my car seat belt against thin fabric is the answer. I’ll try putting my T shirts over the top of the seat belt for a while and see if that makes a difference.

What is weird with my ‘holes’ is that they are all in lightweight cotton T’s and all in the same area, which would suggest friction of some kind.

    Hi Ali
Thanks for all the tips, certainly worth a try. You reminded me of a T shirt of Daniels that was nearly a write off! It was a 21st birthday present of an AJ T shirt that I had bought him in Harrods. It was kind of special as my Dad had died 6 days earlier and I was trying so hard not to let it spoil Daniel’s big day. A couple of weeks later it somehow got caught up in the washing machine and had a big tear and lots of little holes on the hem. I was inordinately upset by it – it was somehow symbolic! Thankfully my local cleaners had a wizard tailor and he was able to make a virtually invisible ‘mend’. Daniel still wears the T shirt over 3 years later!

    Hello Di
Sorry to hear about the broken ribs – I hope you are on the road to recovery now?? I don’t think you necessarily ‘need’ a red power cord ….. I don’t have one. I just adjust the black cords depending on the exercise – works OK for me! Hope it won’t be too long before you are back on your machine.
Ali is doing well in the circumstances – she writes her blog every week so you can keep up to date with her there.

    Hi Audrey
OK I had started to think it was my jeans buttons rubbing on the fabric but if you don’t wear trousers with buttons, are we back to square one? Do you drive? Could it be your seat belt rubbing?

    Hi again Audrey
I can’t really advise on particular exercises to help ease pain – maybe ask the doctor next time he goes for his medication.
I really like hug a tree, serve the brownies and arm circles, but I am not sure if they would be the best exercises for your hubby.
Sorry I can’t be more help

I think you ( along with a couple of others ) are probably right on this question. It is only with certain T shirts but it does seem to be the ones made in thinner cotton. Glad you got sorted

There does seem to be a bit of a concensus of opinion emerging now – those pesky jeans buttons. I hope it is the answer cos at least there are a couple of things we can do to minimise the problem.

    Hello Dylis
Thanks for posting your story on my blog – you know how passionate I am about this machine and clearly you are too. I know that you are not out of the woods yet and may still have to have the op on your back, but how fantastic that Pilates has given you such a renewed lease of life.
I wish you all the best for the future and so pleased that we introduced you to this great machine – I am eternally thankful for the day I met Marjolein and not just for the machine, but as a friend also.

Glad you enjoyed the Pilates shows and that you enjoy your Pilates machine. I haven’t tried your tip yet but I certainly will. I used a load of different muscles using the pull up bar on air and admit to being a bit achy for a couple of days.

    Hello Sue
Both machines are really good – the benefit of the TSV was the addition of the pull up bar – it really depends how much upper body you want to do. I have just upgraded to the 4 cord machine from my old 4 cord which didn’t have the straps on risers. The main reason for the upgrade though was the wider footbar – I’m very flexible from years of dancing and it gives me a better range of motion. I think you’ll be fine with the TSV particularly to start with, but if you think you’ve made the wrong choice use your 30 day moneyback guarantee as the 4 cord machine didn’t sell out.
Good luck with it and take it easy to start with until you get used to the movements

Sorry you were a bit disappointed with your B & W World sequin T shirt – I’m glad you pointed out that they are not always exactly what you see on screen as I had no idea. We sometimes only have one sample at QVC so have nothing to compare them with. Don’t keep it if it’s just going to sit in your wardrobe, there might be one you like better next time!
Not moths or sequins I’ve decided the girls are right and it’s jeans buttons rubbing against the seatbelt in the car + thin cotton!

I haven’t had acupuncture since we moved in October as my acupuncturist was close to where we lived before. He was very reasonable actually, only £35 a session, and he was very good. Chris started going initially for his back and had very good results. I have been for several different things over the years including stress and found it very helpful………….. as you would say we have to ‘just keep swimming’!

    Hi Belinda
I think maybe the culprit is trouser buttons rubbing against the fabric but maybe reducing the spin speed would cause less stress on the fabric particularly if it’s already been rubbed up by the buttons.
No harm in trying – thanks for the tip

  82. Margaret MacDonald May 26, 2011 at 4:16 pm -  Reply

I had the same problem, but seem to have it solved by making sure zips are closed completely before going in the machine. The idea of putting delicate tops in a laundry bag is a good idea also.
The other one is to make sure the hooks on your bra are closed as they can hook in the cloths when spinning.

  83. julia roberts May 26, 2011 at 11:04 pm -  Reply

    Hi Margaret
Thanks for your suggestions – actually I always used to close all the zips before going in the washing machine ( as my Mum taught me to do ) but I must admit I haven’t been so meticulous lately, so I must get back in the habit. Bras always go in a smalls bag, so I don’t think it can be that. I wouldn’t class the affected T shirts as delicates just not very good quality but I could try them in a smalls bag.
It’s all worth a try to stop it happening

I think overall I came to the same conclusion that the jeans certainly are the major contributor to the problem although I think the quality of the fabrics used in some modern T shirts are pretty culpable too.

I had this problem a couple of years ago, several hundred pounds later i have solved it, after buying £100 of moth killing stuff for all our wardrobes and a new Miele washing machine – its nothing to do with either in fact – Its granite worktops! If you feel under the edge of your worktops you may notice its rough in places, as your standing working in the kitchen this rubs your clothing and its worse if your wearing a belt, or jeans with a metal button – thats why the holes are always in the same place – you can get the surface re-polished ( another couple of hundred quid and loads of dust ) or you can start wearing aprons all the time – my option was to get changed the minute i come in from work into some top that already has holes or wont matter if gets them – hope this puts your mind at rest, i found it SO FRUSTRATING as I am pretty careful (in fact obsessive ) about caring for my clothes – regards, Vanessa
