What cake shall I bake?

L'Occitane at largeIt's my mum's 87th birthday on Tuesday so we will be going up to Nottingham to see her. I don't like putting her to any trouble preparing food for us so I usually make a quiche and take it with us…kind of 'meals on wheels' style.

As it's her birthday I'll also take a cake but I haven't decided whether to do the traditional chocolate cake, coffee and walnut or maybe something different – any ideas?

We will be taking an extra guest with us too. Chris has gone to Lincolnshire to bring his mum down to stay with us for a few days so we thought we could take her home via Cotgrave. Our mums get on really well and have been known to have hour-long phone conversations…I wonder what they are saying about us?!?!? It's a shame they don't live closer to each other as I think they would become good friends.

L'Occitane at large2It's been a busy week with lots of sessions at QVC, lots of writing of my new book, and a meeting with the British Polio Fellowship yesterday to discuss future events and fundraising activities. We met at a French restaurant in Covent Garden, Balthazar, and not only was I impressed with the food - I had a pea and spring onion risotto with almonds - I was also impressed with their choice of toiletries in the ladies room…L'Occitane!

It set me wondering where the furthest place, or the most unlikely place, in the world is that you have come across QVC beauty products? There will be a prize of some beauty goodies for the best answer.

50 Hours of Fashion kicked off last night at 10pm with a fab two hour show before the launch of the Trinny & Susannah TSV. Everything on air until Saturday midnight is on 3 Easy Pay so it's the perfect opportunity to start putting together your Autumn/Winter wardrobe. I'll see you later for Dreamkeeper at 4pm and Fenn Wright Manson at 5pm.

Have a lovely weekend.

    Hi Julia,
A very Happy birthday to your Mum, I hope she has a lovely day. I am sure she will with you all there. It is nice that Chris’s Mum is joining you.
As regards the cake, they are both cakes I think everyone loves, maybe you should make one of each. Chocolate cake is my favourite but it has to be nice and moist, I cannot stand a dry cake, that is when you need your dog sat under the table, that’s mean he or she may not like it either.
You mention the L’Occitane, the other day I went to put some Arnia on my knee, I started to rub it in and thought why is that looking all creamy, I had only put the Almond hand wash on, it is the same colour as the Arnica, and I just reached for it and that is what happened. Maybe the glasses are needed more.
Sophie’s job sounds really interesting, and she has done well with her promotion.
Enjoying the shows this weekend, did manage to get something from Yong Kim. Got the Lulu Guinness hand bag for my daughter for Christmas. Beautiful bags.
Anyway Julia have a great weekend with your Mum and family. Oh I did like your hair when you had it up the other night, it really suited you.
Take care, don’t eat too much cake.
    Love Jean XX

    Dear Julia,
I am always drawn to a slice of Lemon Drizzle cake… oh my mouth is watering already.
Lots seems to be happening at QVC the past week or two, the sad departure of Pipa (who I adore) and Carmel…. and where is Debs Greenwood?
I finally took the plunge and bought an iPad when it was the TSV.. its taking me a while to get used to it, but I think I am getting the gang of it now… next step Twitter. Can’t wait to read your next book either… hope you and your family are well.

Hello Julia Happy Birthday Julia’s mum and hello to Chris’s mum. I am sure you all will have a lovely day as from your personality on QVC I get the impression you are a lovely caring person and makes people happy. I think a chocolate cake would be lovely covered in chocolate and chocolate buttons, yummy yummy, that’s got my taste buds going. No one would know you aren’t 100% well as you always look well and so jolly, you are a pleasure to watch, it’s like i’m on set with you ,i’ve watched you from nearly the start, about 3 months after Qvc came to air. Bye for now, Babsq xx

    Hi Julia
I’ve just heard about Amica – i’m so sad. My daughter and i had the pleasure of meeting her a couple of years ago at a jewellery show at QVC and thought how lovely she was.
Hope you had a lovely weekend with your family and bet you can’t wait for the new footie season to start! 6 points in the bag already for us – hope you have the same success in your first matches.
Off to help my daughter (the dance teacher) now – her students are practicing hard for their next dance festival – i know you remember those!

    Hi Julia
How great is that, Mum and her 87th birthday, it’s mine on the 15th and I’m thirteen years behind her it’s my 74th. Smashing idea to take the cake I can reccommend Mary Berry’s Lemon Meringue Cake, I’m sure both yours and Chris’s mum would enjoy it. Thought the 50 hours of fashion was great, some really good idea’s for topping up the wardrobe. Having the grandchildren Tuesday and Thursday this week so planning to go to the York Maize on Tuesday and staying at home for my birthday and then going out for a early supper with the family. Have a lovely day with the family Julia

Julia. If I could have had a sister you would have been it!! LUV your good cheer and I am SOO trying!! I try to feel good and eat but it is SOO hard. This past weekend Jeff’s sister and husband plus one of her daughters came to see him FRM Pennsylvania!! The last time I saw her I was off to College ! We had a nice visit and Jeff had a few good moments with her. He sleeps a lot so we managed in between times. Never mind we made it. My heart is broken after reading on Keeley’s Facebook news about Amica. God be with her in heaven. She was such a lovely person and I just felt so sorry. RIP dear Amica. BLESS her family. Anymore sad news none of us need anymore. Hope you and your Mom have a great Birthday party together and whatever cake you make it will be yummy!! I kept care of my Mom till she was 97 and that was hard work!! She was something else!!
    Thinking of you everyday!! XXX

    Hi Julia
Many Happy Returns to you lovely Mum, hope she has a brilliant day with you all there and enjoys whichever cake you decide, both sound scrummy.
So, so sad to hear the news about beautiful Amica, I didn’t realise she was the model for a manakin and having looked at some photos online, you can see it is Amica. My thoughts go out to her husband, children, family and friends and as said of Beulah ‘Another bright, beautiful, twinkling STAR in our night skies’. At least she is at peace and not alone with Beulah by her side. Nice tribute and picture of them both on Twitter by QVC.
My ankle is coming along slowly and I’m currently bathing it with Arnica Bath Soak, Collagen Bath Cream, followed by a mix together of Arnica Gel and Prolagene. Still got one bruise on top of my foot and my outside ankle bone is still purple, but I went on my Aeropilates machine yesterday and did a couple of heels which has help…it certainly feels better without the metal inside.
The X-Ray showed 5 horizontal holes through the outside bone and 1 hole up the middle of the inside, which has already started to fill in. The Consultant was over booked and the one we saw was the guy who operated on my hand and guess what, once he’d checked out my leg, he wanted to know about having my right hand done. I think my eyeballs nearly popped out of my head. I said I’d leave it a while until my leg is better, as if that wasn’t enough for now, ouch!
BTW the pull-up bar arrived, which I put together and attached, but haven’t had chance to use it yet because at 5’2″ I’ll have to push myself back to reach it and don’t want to upset my leg if I miss!
Hope everything is ok with you.

You did make me laugh with your Arnica / Almomd Oil story! I guess they are a similar colour but I bet you noticed the smell quite quickly.
Glad to hear you enjoyed 50 hours of fashion – there was a beautiful Yong Kim shirt that I had my eye on but I think it sold out before the actual Yong Kim shows.
Your daughter is a lucky girl having a Lulu Guiness bag for Christmas.
I had to make my mum’s cake yesterday as I am doing some off air filming for QVC today and when I get home I will have to ice the cake and make a quiche. I went for the chocolate cake and it’s looking good.

I haven’t been able to get any writing done this weekend but will devote a few hours of Wednesday to the new book. I’m loving writing fiction – in some ways it’s easier than the autobiography … a few months away from finishing it though.

We all immediately felt at home as they had all L’ Occitane products in the bathroom. What’s more when I mentioned to the Chamber Maid that this was my family’s favourite brand of toiletries etc, she packed me a huge bag of soaps and lotions , compliments of the hotel. What a fantastic gesture that was!

    Hi Julia,
Hope you are keeping well and have a lovely time with your mum. Your book has inspired me to start one of my own :-)
I’m not sure If it counts as unusual but when I was getting married we found the perfect venue for the reception, a real luxury country house hotel but shock horror the toiletries in the bathrooms were not up to our QVC standards. On the wedding day we replaced all the soap and hand lotions in the public bathrooms with L’Occitane. My mum collected them all up at then end of the day but noticed one set was missing and was outraged that someone had stolen them and thought it was probably another hotel guest. Imagine my shock when a few weeks later I was visiting a dear and trusted friend only to use her bathroom and find the stolen luxury toiletries on her bathroom sink! We laughed about it and she was horrified to hear they weren’t the property of the hotel (obviously comfortable with pilfering from them – honour among thieves maybe?)
Sadly my love for QVC tolietries outlasted the love in my marriage but at least my hands always smell nice :-) Surely that can count as a competition entry?
    All the best

No I didn’t go to Wembley just watched it on TV! It was a very entertaining game and maybe a draw would have been a fairer result. I am with you on boo’ing national anthems. We all have our own roots of which we are rightly proud and we should respect the right of others to have theirs! ….. off my soapbox now.
A friend of mine, goalkeeper Steve Simonsen, is training with Rangers at the moment I think?
Very excited for Sunday. No Bale but still lots of attacking threat. Thanks for your optimism for a 0 – 0 but even losing on the first game of the season would’ve be disastrous ….. it’s a marathon not a sprint ad we need to find our feet. Relieved that Jedinak will be ok to play after his black eye suffered against Lazio.

    Hi Steven
Well we didn’t get any points on Sunday but neither were we thrashed – losing to a penalty against Spurs is not a bad result particularly as I think they are in with a good chance of doing very well this season with AVB at the helm.
Looking forward to seeing more of Chamakh and also the Spaniard Campana, who didn’t feature at all on Sunday, and maybe less of a couple of others who look decidedly ‘Championship’.
Hope Simmo gets the gig at Rangers, not only is he a good keeper he’s a really nice bloke.
Stoke next for us … we could win that one!

She said she had a factor 50 I could have as she was going home tomorrow. I thought to myself… It won’t be as good as my Ultra sun! What did she pull out of her bag?? Ultrasun!! I said that’s what I use! She said she buys it from QVC as do I! Xxx Caroline x

    Hi Julia,
I caught some Decleor product in Tenerife this week and also in Florida last summer. I live Decleor and L’occitane, and am pampering my slightly tanned skin with both to get the moisture back in to it now (used Ultrasun cream when away, factor 50 so Ali Young will approve) xx

    Dear Julia,
The furthest place I have visited is Fiji, I spent a wonderful week there when my son was six months old on a round the world trip with my husband. We were lucky enough to return there five years later with my daughter as well this time, never forgotten beautiful place or people.

    Hi Caroline
How lucky were you! Glad to hear you are using factor 50 on your face, as do I – got to keep on the good side of Ali Young!
Definitely in with a chance of winning the goodies!

    Hi Christine
Glad to hear you are a Decleor and L’Occitane fan ….. Decleor have a TSV coming up soon and L’Occitane have September Beauty Product of the Month and a September TSV! ( Alexis tells me it is based on the Almond Oil … yay!)
Hope your skin has re moisturised after the sunbathing but at least you were using high SPF and there is now proof that some sun exposure does us good.

    Hi Amanda
Fiji sounds great and definitely a place I would like to visit one day. You didn’t mention if there were any QVC beauty products there though ….. apart from any you may have taken with you!
