What a Cracker!

35

We are fast approaching twelfth night and all my decorations will come down then (if they last that long) so this is definitely my last mention of Christmas. We had crackers at Christmas lunch and used the remainder for our family dinner on New Year's Day.

We had bought nice crackers so the little gifts inside were quite useful – well most of them that is. I've been using the pen, there was a mirror compact, a miniature chess set and a pretty bag charm, but none of us could work out what this is?? We thought it might be a bottle opener but it didn't fit any of the standard size bottles.

I wonder if any of you have any idea what it might be? I've photographed it from both sides to try and help with your guesses… any suggestions??

The Thing Thing

Palace GroundTalking of 'What a Cracker', that could also be applied to the football match I went to see on New Year's Day. My team Crystal Palace were playing Wolves and we were hoping for three points as we had only managed to accrue two points out of a possible nine over the Christmas period. I took my new camera along to take a few shots!

The first is of the Holmesdale Stand to show that my team is well supported – it was quite amusing as a friend of Sophie's was watching the game from there and they were waving to each other from either end of the pitch!

The second photo was of the free kick being taken that scored our third goal and the last picture is of our goalie Julian Speroni about to kick out. He was playing his four hundredth match for us and many people believe him to be the best in the Championship, me included! We won the game 3 – 1 so I was a very happy bunny.

Goal! Julian

I hope 2013 will be a good year for you all and that you will continue to watch and shop with us here at QVC.

Much love, Julia xx

Does this not have something to do with cutting through the plastic around the top of a wine bottle before taking the cork out??

Could it be a nutcracker or a screw-cap bottle opener for hard to loosen bottle tops?

Julia the only thing which comes to mind is nutcrackers? Could bw wrong, though. Hope you and yours had a wonderful festive season and wishing you health and happiness for 2013 x love Morag

The cracker item is a foil cutter. You place it round the neck of the wine bottle and the little wheels cut through the foil

It’s to cut the top foil of a wine bottle before using a corkscrew

Hi Julia I think it is the thing to cut the foil top on a wine bottle then you will be able to get to the cork to take that out sorry I don’t think I am explaining it very well.Happy New Year

Hi Julia, it’s a foil cutter for the foil on top of a wine bottle. We had one in our corkscrew set. You put it round the neck of the wine bottle, twist it, and it cuts the foil.

Happy new year to you Julia and all the team! Did my ears deceive me the other night? or did i catch the tail end of a conversation about you deciding to tie the knot?!!! jan x

I know what it is!!!! it is used to cut the foil from the top of a wine bottle. You gently squeeze it around the bottle top and then move it in a circle which cuts the foil neatly to reveal the cork.
    Hope this stops you pondering.

Hello Julia, Could this item be a trivet stand for a saucepan, little hard to gauge from the photo how big it is, but it looks like a very nice silver thing anyway, and sounds like the presents inside the crackers were well received, we have had a good Christmas but now must get shot of the chocolates, and get back to normal eating, Janicexxx

Hello Julie, The picture you shown from your christmas cracker, I think this is a foil wine cutter, you put it on top of the wine and turn it around and hopefully cut the top of foil off. hope this works.

HAPPY NEW YEAR JULIA. IT IS A METAL FOIL CUTTER APPARENTLY . I GOOGLED WINE ACCESSORIES AND IT POPPED UP THERE. I DON’T DRINK WINE AS IT MAKES ME GO RED SO I WILL NEVER NEED ONE FOR MYSELF!
HOPE 2013 IS A MUCH BETTER YEAR THAN LAST FOR YOU AND MYSELF. IT HASN’T STARTED TOO WELL YET UNFORTUNATELY BUT ONWARDS AND UPWARDS I KEEP SAYING. SO CHEERS FOR NOW – SHIRLEYx

    Hi Julia,
The cracker gift is for taking off the foil on the top of a wine bottle. It’s a very useful little gadget and beats prizing it off with a knife!
    Best Wishes for 2013

Could it be another cracker – a nut cracker? Happy New Year!

Hi Julia, I think your cracker gift is a foil cutter. You place it around the top of a bottle of wine, needed when it has a cork stopper, hold the ends together and turn around the neck of the bottle. This should have cut around the foil, enabling you to insert a corkscrew and remove the cork.
I wish you and your family a happy 2013.
    Best wishes,
    Anne Jones

It looks like a foil cutter for a bottle of wine. If you squeeze the open ends together around the top of the bottle and spin the bottle the foil will be cut free. Hope this helps

    Hi Julia,
We had one of these in our crackers too! and spent ages trying to work out what it was, we thought it was part of something else that was missing, ours went in the bin though. I’ve just read the comments and realise what “its” use is,oh well we’ve survived this long opening a bottle of wine without one!

    Hi Janice
I guess the photo made it look larger than it is but it is not a saucepan trivet, it is a foil cutter for a wine bottle.
I know what you mean about the chocolates – we still have two boxes unopened (maybe they should stay that way?)

    Hi Shirley
Sorry to hear your year has not started off too well – hope it will improve from here on in. It made me laugh when you mentioned that wine turns your face red – that happened to me once with a glass of red wine. As the wine was emptying out of the glass it looked like it was filling my face – the children were in hysterics!!

Thanks for the good wishes for the new year, and the same to you.
Yes good result against Wolves but they weren’t great if I’m honest. Only managed a draw in the cup against Stoke which was a tad disappointing and now we have a replay which we could do without!
We have Burnley away tomorrow so would be nice to get back to winning ways
