You may have noticed (well, I hope you did!) that I've been off your QVC screen for a while – I have just had the most wonderful THREE WEEK holiday! Olley and I decided that the children are all independent enough for us to head off on an adventure all on own, so we set off in our motorhome across the channel with no specific plans except to head south. We have only managed UK long weekends in the motorhome since we bought it last year, so this would be our first proper holiday in it.
We weren't completely alone – Barney the dog came with us for his first ever trip abroad. He is very proud of his new passport, and was determined to come with us as he was due to celebrate his 14th birthday while we were away! We make a good team – Olley drives while I map read and plan, with the help of a pile of guide and campsite books.
The freedom of being able to go where ever we want is something we both really enjoy – we had nothing booked, although we knew we wanted to explore the centre of France. The ancient volcanoes of the Auvergne, the river gorge of the Ardeche and on to the vineyards of Languedoc, then travelling north again through the Lot and Dordogne valleys.
We did all this and more, spending four nights in Spain and enjoying the stunning scenery of the Pyrenees as well. We shopped for regional produce in local markets so we ate simply, cheaply but deliciously. Occasionally we indulged in long, leisurely meals in village restaurants that don't feature in any good food guide but where the cuisine, in our opinion, was worthy of any number of stars. We walked in the sunshine, swam in the rivers and drank the wine! Most of all, we relaxed.
Away from the pressures of our day to day lives, we enjoyed the most uninterrupted time together since our honeymoon 26 years ago. It took a week for me to lose my early morning awakening habit, but being able to roll over and go back to sleep rather than rise for the QVC Morning Show is one of the pleasures of being on holiday!
We had a moment when things didn't completely go our way – within a few hours of leaving Calais we had a crisis when our brakes failed! Olley managed to drive to a safe place to stay and we had to find a mechanic. With the help of our European breakdown cover, copious and imaginative sign language and a French dictionary we got it sorted and were on our way again. Other than that, we had the most fabulous time. We arrived home after three weeks feeling refreshed and recharged, and still with plenty of the British summer left to enjoy. And, of course, ready to rise bright and early to bring you the Morning Show once again.
And don't forget, Morning Style will be returning on Wednesday mornings at 10am on the first Wednesday in August (the 7th) and we'll be looking at how to create a capsule wardrobe, selecting garments that can work together to bring you lots of different outfits for various moods and occasions.
Hope you can join us!
All the best to you… Kathy xx
