As part of this event, each week we'll be showing different craft projects for you to follow. This week we have two projects – a step-by-step Butterfly card project and a follow-along video Spring Garden card project.
Perfect if you love stamping or even if you've never given it a go, get crafty with this intricate card. This is not a quick project – you’ll need to set aside a few hours to really enjoy assembling all the details that go into this project.
What you will need:
- Cut 'n' Dry blending foam
- Brilliance Inks – pearlescent lavender, pearlescent purple, pearlescent sky blue, pearlescent orchid, Red Rocket Gold, coffee bean and Moonlight White
- Scalloped edge square card
- Butterfly stamps
- Shrink plastic - translucent
- Foiling kit
- Heat gun
- Martha Stewart Glitter set - silver, turquoise, purple sapphire and charoite
- Self Adhesive gems
- Mirri card pack
- A4 glittered sheets
- Adhesive runners set
- Silicone glue
Step 1: Start with a square scalloped edge card measuring 15cm x 15cm. Next take a piece of 12cm x 12cm white card and using a piece of Cut 'n' Dry with Brilliance Inks Pearlescent Lavender and Pearlescent Purple, gently work your way all round the edge of the card and into the centre creating a subtle background to work on.
Step 2: Using the butterfly stamps, start stamping each butterfly (colours and positioning as shown on the image). To get this more subtle effect, first stamp on a scrap piece of card and then using the second, less inky image stamped onto the 12cm x 12cm card.
Tip – using the second image when stamping is ideal when using new and very inky ink pads
Step 3: Taking the translucent sheet of shrink plastic, prep the sheet by cross hatching with the sanding tool included in the kit. This provides a base ready for stamping on. Using one of the large butterflies in the kit stamp six times - twice in Pearlescent Lavender, twice in Pearlescent Sky Blue and twice in Pearlescent Orchid. Put this to one side to dry for a few minutes. Next cut out three butterflies, one in each colour and using your heat gun shrink it down.
Step 4: Stamp the two large butterfly designs three times each onto a piece of white paper using the Brilliance Coffee Bean Ink, this will form a sheet of designs from which you will be able to lay acetate over and follow the designs. You are stamping three so you have room for mistakes or to make more if you wish, you will only need two of each design.
Step 5: Take a sheet of A4 acetate and place this over the stamped design on the white card (you can secure this in place with some adhesive at the top corners to stop it moving as you work on it). Follow the design with a glue pen in the foiling kit, leave the glue to turn from blue to clear and then it will be ready to apply the foiling. Apply the silver foiling to two of each of the designs.
Step 6: Outline the foiled butterflies with the glue pen and add some glitter to the wings. Cut the wings out (two sets) and add to the butterfly using silicone glue. Cover the silicone glue in the centre with silver glitter.
Step 7: Add ribbon along the crease fold of the card and tie into a small bow at the top. Add your choice of two butterflies, one to each end of the bow ribbon. Add the third butterfly to the inside of the card.
Step 8: Mat butterfly panel to silver mirri card and then cerise pink glitter paper. Add this to the card front, to finish card off add some gems for the butterfly antenna and to the main body of the small shrink plastic butterflies and add a sentiment of your choice. Finished!
