Crazy weather and hair horrors…

Alison with Paul Young This time last week I was hanging my washing on the line, and applying factor 30 to the parts of me exposed to the sun, for fear of burning in the balmy weather!  In the space of three days, I have lost tiles off my roof, had rain water pouring into my loft and lost a pair of smalls off the washing line!  Just loving the spring weather!

So along with claiming on the house insurance – for the roof repairs, not the underwear – I have to work out a way of writing to Mr Gordon Ramsey and explaining to him that he can no longer call his cottage pie shepherd's pie, because it's made with beef not lamb!  Thanks so much to all of you who joined in the debate last week, and gave me your own version of the recipe.

Not sure if you watched QVC over the weekend, but we had a great TSV from Veho – the Filmscan 35 that enables you to transfer all those old transparencies, negatives and slides into pictures that you could either print from a memory card or download onto your computer.

I have literally bags full of old negatives that go back years, so I can't wait to receive mine. I got the guest Ben to go through a strip of negatives from the 90s when I worked at Beacon Radio in the West Midlands, and he found this picture of me with the singer Paul Young (above)!  That was back in the day when 'Wherever I lay my hat' was a huge hit for him – me thinks I should have borrowed his hat and worn it for the photo… what was that hair all about?!

It reminds me of some dreadful hair disasters I've had over the years, with possibly the worst when I was 16 and went to have my hair highlighted at the local salon.  In those days you had to wear a rubber skull cap that had holes in it, and they'd pull your hair through with a thing that looked like a crochet hook… agony!

Well, the hairdresser left the bleach on too long, and when she took the cap off, the hair that was pulled through the holes stretched to almost double the length.  It was the consistency of an elastic band, and snapped when brushed.  I was a platinum blonde with hair of an indeterminate length – depending on whether I brushed it that day or not.

Another delight was the pistachio green shade my bleached hair took on after two weeks of sun and chlorine… I had to have it all cut off when I got home, so with brown roots and green tips I looked like a mint chocolate!

Have you ever had a horrible hair day/week/month or year? I look forward to hearing your horror stories!

Have to go now and take Dodge to the vet, he's not been too well over the last 24 hours, so I want to get him checked out.  I'll let you know how he does.

Have a good week,

Love Ali xx

Belated Happy birthday for last week…I have only just discovered that it was so while browsing your weblog. I have to say that you are charmingly funny and uplifting on TV and you always make me laugh through your sheer irrepressible spirit and ‘joie de vivre’…seriously trying to avoid overdosing on your good humour,( ie staying up Wednesdays till 2am just to hear sparkling laughter not so clever if I have an appointment next day This aspect is especially valuable at the mo since am currently going thru the pain of a decree nisi…so keep chirpy and keep the customers happy…good luck!
    Thank you

I am so jealous of you having a picture of Paul Young, WITH HIS ARM AROUND YOU. I met him once at Stringfellows in the Eighties and he was totally underwhelmed. Mind you I was with Linda Lusardi so there was an awful lot of competition!

    Hi Ali
It is Magda from Mallorca again, just to tell you that we are also having crazy weather here. The last 2 weeks have been great, sunny and warm, I even put on my Butler and Wilson T Shirts. But in the last few days, it all changed.
Heavy rain, wild wind, and no sun. Central heating back onall day, no good.
When it comes to horrible hair days, I have a few. When we moved to Spain, my Spanish was not very good, and I went to have my hair cut, I did not want it too short, but some how I ended up with a very short hair ( I laways have long hair), I cried for days.
Then I asked an English friend to cut my hair another time, but she had a few drinks for lunch, and we chated while she cut my hair, again I ended up with short hair, and more tears. Now my Spanish is good I go to a good hairdresser and no more tears, thank God.
P.S. Is that Paul Young with you in the photo?
    All the best.

    Hi Lewis,
Well thank you so much!! I feel the need to print your comments out and paste them to the dressing room wall to cheer me when I am faced with the velcro rollers and foundation!! I so appreciate you staying up until the wee small hours and at the risk of sounding sexist, you could do a lot worse then joining me tomorrow night for our Tom Tom TSV and then another Archos on Friday! ….and you have my complete sympathy re: decree nisi – not something I’d care to repeat… chin up and look forward to the better weather… well that’s what Michael Fish told me. Hi there J Baker – are you a Jane, Joan, Julie or Jasmine?? Quite probably none of the aforementioned, but the fact you’ve taken the time out to make a comment has cheered me no end. I hope your husband enjoyed his dance class, and entertained you with his new moves once you’d put the laptop down!! Luckily I do tend to see the funny side of things which is a bonus otherwise with all that seems to happen in our home I’d have a face like a lemon! You take good care and keep in touch as it really is lovely to hear from you.
    Love Ali x

My dear Lady Greenwood, it is far more likely that Mr Paul Young was speechless at the sight of your beauty, but couldn’t get a proper look, as you may well have been in the shadow of Ms. Lusardi’s attributes, being as she is a great deal taller than you…… I forced him to put his arm round me, otherwise I wasn’t prepared to play his current single…. I was hard hearted in those days. love ali xx

Magda I have had more than a few tears reading your comments….. unkindly with merriment as I heard about your horrific hair do’s. Never drink and do ANYTHING…. other than stay sitting – my mother’s advice to me. I’m so glad you have found not only the right words but the right salon to visit now. I could add to it our growing collection in the presenter’s lounge. Oh, and yes that is Paul Young in the photo with me. VERY many years ago when I worked on Beacon Radio in the Midlands. He was lovely, and very funny. Extremely tall I remember too. Either that or I was standing in a hole…..Love ali xx

Can I please have the item number of your silver watch you wear. Its looks like it might be diamonique and similar to the TSV sometime ago, except yours looks like it has a smaller face which is just want I am looking for.

    Hi Lorraine,
I am delighted you like my watch… it’s the same one Kathy and Pippa wear and you’re right it was a previous TSV. Proof if proof were needed that a leopard can change it’s spots! It is so unlike any other watch I own or have ever worn, but i LOVE it. Item no is 688613, and it’s £48.96 – worth every penny. Our american guest from Smashbox thought it was a Chanel!!! Fancy?! Hope you love it as much as I do. thanks for contacting me.
