The trials and tribulations of moving house

5

Ok, so now the reality is hitting home, sorry did I say home, I should say the moving of one's home!

I wrote at Christmas of the yo-yoing of our chain with buyers being secured and then dropping out, although we kept our original buyers thankfully! Anyway, it's all happening and the move day is rapidly approaching and now I'm scared!

Ok, so the removals are booked, but am I doing the right thing in packing mostly myself? Am I mad? I have conceded to them doing kitchen and breakables but foolishly me thinks I reckon I can cope! It's actually Dan who has the really tough job of the garden and loft to look forward to…

The whole address change thing is a pain too isn't it? Shall I just do the essentials and redirect the post for a while? But being the Mrs Impatient that I am means I keep ringing companies and being told I'm ahead of myself and have to wait till nearer the time. Don't they understand I have to seize teeny moments and try and tick things of the ever expanding list?

Oh and have I told you the plan? We'll move in, await planning permission then move out into a rented house! No doubt there'll be a lot of screaming, shouting and crying while the huge works take place, and then we'll have to MOVE BACK IN!

Ok, so shall we start the bets now as to how long it will all take and how many sense of humour failures I have?!

Seriously though tips, tips and more tips is greatly needed, especially with this packing up process! All advice gratefully received no matter how small.

Jill Franks just keeps calling me mad and I know Anne Dawson is living through chaos at the moment, so come on help me please!

Love Claire

    Hi Claire
After reading your latest blog I had deja vu, we sold our house moved in to new house (well actually it was old) the day before christmas eve!! in 2005, waited for planning permission then moved out again! and rented an apartment, the builders told us it would take 6 months, never believe what builders tell you! we moved back in 11 months later just in time for christmas 07 and it was worth the wait! its beautiful.
My advice about the packing is let the removal guys pack for you, pack the valuable items yourself, but leave the rest to them, they are use to packing and are really professional just make sure the boxes are clearly labelled, we put most of our things in to storage while the build was going on and just took a limited amount of things to the place we rented, its suprising how many things you can live without!
I hope everything goes well with your move!
    Neat x

    Hi Claire
I know how you feel, but do not think about it too much, get the removal people to do the packing for you, only do your personal items yourself. Believe me it is hard to start with but you will enjoy it at the end. Idid not just move house, in 2000, we sold our house and moved to Spain (Mallorca). A new house, a new life, and builders who do not speak a word of English, and here I was with my max of 10 words of Spanish, and a house that needed everything done to it. We had lots of loughters, some tears, lots of fun. And as always happy ending, great house and a great new life.
I wish you all the luck in the world, and enjoy all of it. You are a great girl. Iam sure you will cope fine, use a good removal company and a good place for storage and the rest will fall into place.
    Magda.

    Hi Claire
Hope the move goes/ went ok… We moved recently and i have just had triplets so that was alot of hard work…
Love my new house and cant see us moving from here – we live in Kingswood in Surrey – do you know it?
Let me know how you get on. I have decorated a room for the triplets for when they are a bit older, its like their own living room, that is a bit premature seeing as they are only babies but im sure they will like it. If you would like to see a photo let me know
Take care Denise x and my little babies :-)
