This Morning, delicious smoothies and sofa shopping

How’s your week been? Mine has been a busy and triumphant one.

My resolve with Diet Chef has paid off. Remember I didn’t lose anything after week two? I lost 2lbs this last week and I am thrilled. The scales tell me I’ve come just under a very significant weight milestone for me – I’ve not been in this range for years! Not going to lie to you though; I am finding it very hard, because – despite the lovely food in the 28 Day Hamper – I struggle to walk past a Greggs or a chippy.

I used to just eat anything I liked, whenever I liked, and the same with beer: so obviously it was all to excess. I’m trying mind over matter to stay strong and remind myself that smaller portions are best, and saturated fat and sugar in extreme amounts are bad for you. One more week on the hamper and then I’ll decide if I will do another month of it. It’s taught me to eat more fruit and veg, and drink lots more water. I’ve developed an insane passion for fresh raspberries (easier on my teeth too!) and I haven’t forsaken wine or beer: just had LESS of it!

Speaking Beer magazine coverof beer…

I’ve got some exciting beer plans ahead. Writing about beer ( is a bit of a hobby for me. Beer is a fabulous low-alcohol alternative to wines and spirits, and is a tasty drink for ladies when you find the right one. In the past I’ve arranged and hosted elegant beer-tasting parties for women, and I’m proud to say I’ve converted over 500 women from being staunch wine drinkers into enjoying beer.

Granted, since arriving at QVC and blogging here I’ve had less time, but one thing I did find time for was an article for BEER magazine. It’s the mag that all Campaign For Real Ale members are posted every quarter. This Spring/Summer I made the front cover: all about how beer is often sidelined by wine, the way I’ve championed beer on the telly these last three years, and it has a particular focus on how my appearance on THIS MORNING worked out. So if you or anyone you know is a CAMRA member, tell them Marv from QVC wrote the article!

P.S. Watch out for a BEER & BEAUTY competition coming up on my blog soon!!!

And here are a clip of me with Holly & Phil on THIS MORNING:

Mum's new sofa

I often mention my wonderful Mum on air and she’s had some fabulous news this week. A potential date’s been set to move her into a retirement village, which she has very much been looking forward to. So we shopped for carpets, a new bed and a new sofa suite. We had a right good giggle testing all the chairs and bouncing on beds. Like a couple of kids, we were.

Me and Ingrid TarrantFun at QVC
This week I feel like I met something of a soulmate at QVC: Ingrid Tarrant brought along the fabulous Yong Kim tunic TSV. We had a lovely time nattering backstage about our mutual backgrounds in journalism, and Ingrid’s experience working with Nick Owen back in the days of TV-AM. She remembers him with such fondness and they had some fun times. I spent four years working alongside the dashing Nick as a Producer, Reporter & Newsreader at BBC Midlands Today up in Birmingham, where he still presents the 6:30pm weeknight news bulletin! Small world, eh?

Smoothies for charity
You’ll recognise Sharon as one of our regular models on many, many QVC fashion shows over the years. Well, earlier in the week she and the FOR THE LOVE OF JUICE team set up outside our staff canteen. They set up a fresh juicing bar and offered healthy fruit and vegetable smoothies in return for a donation to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, in honour of a good friend of ‘Stretch’ from our Backstage team, who sadly passed away last year. I downed a Carrot & Orange smoothie, and £125 was raised on the day. Fab work, team! I hope they’ll be back soon!

    Hi Marv
Well done on the weight loss – it’s difficult not to get impatient once you’ve taken the plunge into losing weight, but you’re definitely heading in the right direction. I’m sure that if you persist – either with diet chef full-time, or maybe using it to help you out when you’ve not the time or energy to shop and cook for yourself, you’ll maintain that slow and steady drop in weight that gives you a better chance of keeping the weight off. It made me laugh when you said how difficult it is to walk past a Greggs or a chippy! It’s so true, and bless you for saying it like it is.
I didn’t get quite organised enough with my juice detox to lose any weight (didn’t get the weigh-in beforehand) so I focused instead on boosting my energy and wellbeing. So … weight loss for me is still a work in progress, but… caffeine-free and more energy. Sleeping better. Not craving the “naughties”. Not snacking. I’ve also carried on juicing. Just for breakfast though, not the whole day, and with the addition of half an avocado making my juice into a smoothie means it feels more substantial. With all those gains already, I’m sure I’ll soon be losing the lbs too.
The clip of the beer tasting was excellent – Philip and Holly were really funny, but obviously impressed by your knowledge and insight. As someone who doesn’t actually like wine, it’s interesting to learn about beers and how they complement different foods. You should put a beer of the week / month in your blog here.

    Hi Marverine,
Good to hear all your news as always. In case you missed it on your earlier blog, many thanks for taking the time to write back to me. I wasn’t expecting you to but thank you! Glad you thought Lettie was gorgeous! She’s asleep at the mo looking adorable – yesterday she was a bit all over the place and this morning too, probably the weather doesn’t help.
I thought you really held your own on “This Morning” – good for you, I hope it may become a regular slot for you. Your knowledge is excellent and you came across extremely well. Due to personal reasons, I’m teetotal but I completely agree that women should give beers a chance. When I did drink, I always preferred a beer to wine anyway. (I find many white wines are quite acidic and not good for the insides!) It’s great too that you bring small, independent breweries to the fore.
Last but not least, I feel I do need to say that you looked fab – your make-up was flawless and that pink top really suited you – hope this doesn’t sound superficial or girlie, it’s not meant to be.
You take care and I hope your Mum gets her moving-in date soon!
    Beth XXX

Hello Louise – well done on the juicing – I think breakfast juicing is the way to go. Kick start the day and eat heathily the rest of the day. I think all day juices and actually not chewing food for any amount of time isn’t the best thing. But maybe I think that because I just couldn’t stick to it! HA HA HA! But I’m pretty sure the weight would shoot back on as soon as some food hit my lips. You’re going the right way about it in my book: slowly and carefully, boosting up your energy levels. We’re all individuals and we really need to concentrate on what’s best for us, what makes us feel better and if you’re happy with your way, then that’s ALL that matters. Having enough energy is so fundamental to how we operate day-to-day, and removing anything from our diet that we think is sapping energy (like sugary foods and drinks) is making progress. Keep it up, I say! Beer of the Week/Month sounds ace! Holly & Phil are superb to work with too: they both genuinely do love beer, which is always a good place to start when you’re on the telly doing a beer-tasting! And thanks for dropping by. Stay connected with me, won’t you?
Hi Beth – so glad you got the card. Julia and I opened your letter together as it arrived last week on a very rare day where our programmes overlapped. It’s always fun catching up with her and I was so excited to see Lettie. Thanks so much for sharing the photos. I took photos of them on my iPhone so I can keep them. I showed them to Austen and we’ve both been remarking how much she looks like Conkers!
This Morning was fab – I also did a Father’s Day beer slot last June (but for the life of me haven’t had a minute to upload it to YouTube yet – so naughty of me) but that was a blast too. Holly & Phil LOVE beer and were really up for the tasting! Cheers for the comment on my make-up – I think that day at ITV I’d had it done by a make-up artist. It’s not at all superficial or girlie to say it at all. Nowt wrong with being girlie: girlie is celebrated on QVC with some fabulous make-up ideas. In fact I’m doing my first show with Benefit Cosmetics this Saturday lunchtime at 12noon – everything to make you look lovely and natural, especially if you’re new to doing your brows, lashes, blusher and lips. Why not tune in for some extra tips? Mum and I have been shopping for wardrobes – all coming together. Fingers crossed!

    Hi Marverine
Sooooooooooooo enjoyed meeting you at the good old Beauty Bash a couple of weeks ago (how time flies!) Talking of the Beaty Bash, i couldn’t believe we won the very last raffle prize of the day!!!!! What a treat, as if the goodie bag wasn’t enough. We were soooooo very grateful and wanted to say a BIG thank you to Qvc, so maybe we now can through you! I’m taking this opportunity to touch base with you, as they say, as I’m not on twitter OR Facebook. I daren’t have many more distractions than I already have, as i know my friends will verify that they are addictive temptations to our daily life!! So just to say, I follow your shows with interest and love your infectious warmth & sense of fun. I think of you when I drive through Great Barr on my way to work in Sandwell Hospital ( sadly not the fun-filled job you are lucky to have!) and couldn’t believe how close we lived…….what a coincidence! Lovely of you to mention myself & Angie in your blog…….you said you would! The clip with Holly & Phil was great but those two are just so naughty aren’t they?! And i hope your lovely mum will settle into her new home.
So keep up the good work and if you & Austen find yourself in Sutton Park for a lovely long walk on one of your days back home in Brum, look out for us walking our two lovely rescue doggies!
Love & Best Wishes Jan ( and Angie ) xxxx

    Hi Local Girl!
You are so kind and thank you for your lovely compliments but I have to respond with………..I wish!!!!!!!
I can’t believe I work so near, and yet haven’t ventured to the new Tesco’s yet OR our local Primark! I still prefer my Thursday eve late night shop and supper in Birmingham with friends. Meant to say, I have a lovely photo of you from the Beauty Bash but don’t know how to get it to you without Facebook or Twitter……….do I have to dip my toe into the water and indulge?!………..poor hubby if I do!
Congrats on your weight loss but but thought you had a lovely figure anyway so as you said in your last blog, all things in moderation. Hope your mum settles in the new retirement village, I know it’s the end of an era for her and the family but just enjoy every minute with her………….I sadly lost my precious mum a couple of years ago (she lived in Stourbridge) we were joined at the hip and although she was an older lady, we had so much fun together and my family adored her, so boy is it the most difficult journey of my life…… it doesn’t really matter where she is based if she is in your life and surrounded by family that love her.
I’ve told Angie I keep in touch with you via your blog and I know she enjoys Qvc too and it makes it that little bit more special watching your shows now that we’ve met you.
As always, keep up the good work and ooooh if you remember (or get to read this) do your remember the beer you recommended that was brewed in Cornwall or was it the West Country in general?…….. If not, no worries.
Take care xxxxxxxxxxxx & a big Mwah back atcha ‘are kid’
    Love Jan xxxx
