The best days of your life!

Julia's first day at West Bridgford Grammar School 1967 Well after a disappointing summer, the children have gone back to school this week so the sun has come out – typical! Is it climate change or has it been ever thus?? Probably a bit of both, but I can certainly remember wearing my winter uniform in September and being very warm!

Speaking of which, this photo (left) is of me, aged 11, on my first day at West Bridgford Grammar School. Funny thing is, I was talking about looking for this photo during a Jewellery show the other day.

It was a lapis lazuli show and I was remarking about my old school uniform being royal blue and gold. I had no idea where the photo was, or whether Mum had it or had given it to me.

Well I wasn't looking for the photo, I was instead sorting out my overflowing 'in tray' at home. I came across a big white envelope with my Mum's writing on it and guess what, the photo was inside along with loads of others from my childhood. It seemed an appropriate time to post it… don't you just love the beret? I wonder if they still make girls wear them.

Mind you, I must say I prefer to see school children in uniform - I always think it looks so smart. I wonder if any of the girls returning to school will be lucky enough to have a Kipling bag as their school or college bag. There might be something suitable at midnight on Saturday into Sunday (hint hint) so hope to see you there.

Speak soon, love Julia xx

Oh Julia, how could you tease us with a hint about the kipling TSV and not give us any more details? I was looking at your blog hoping you might give the game away or at the very least a photo with you holding the bag- we all know how naughty you are,
    telling the tsv secrets.
You look very smart in your uniform. My children will be wearing blazers for the first time this year and I’m so excited to see how smart they will look. But I wish the school hols would last forever.

I’m just watching the midnight Kipling launch show and had to come across and have a peep at your blog when you mentioned your old school photo! You look so cute! I’m close to you in age and remember this exactly, although we had a truly hideous straw boater for the summer!! I completely agree with you about school uniforms, too. I know we all moaned about them, but they did look smart and they also didn’t differentiate so much between those who were comfortably off and those who were not. In these days of designer labels and ever-changing fashion trends, it must be so hard for those youngsters who have little chance of affording to keep up. Our old uniform was maroon and grey. The only godsend over yours, if I may say so, is our socks were long grey ones and not white!! Thanks for another fabulous Kipling TSV – I’m too embarrassed to tell you how many of their bags I now have in my collection!

Hi Julia, Yes I agree with you it makes you feel part of the school and everyone is the same. My mum bought me a boater for the summer it looked smart but seems so old fashioned now.
Just bought my Kipling tsv in soda pop black i must have quite a collection by now. What makes this brand stand out for me is the logo which you should see is always on the right side of the bag so the zips are not at the back (if you know what I mean)! Hope you enjoy the shows. xx

    Hi Adrienne
What do you mean naughty????? I hope your children looked smart in their blazers. My two had to wear uniform all through school and in the sixth form they had to wear black suits which also looked very stylish.
I love my children dearly, but I was always quite relieved when they went back to school as after so many weeks off they had usually started to get bored!
I wonder what you will be like when they go off to Uni?!?!

    Hi Margaret
I wonder which TSV colour you went for??? I liked the Maya Blue and of course the print!
Thanks for saying I looked ‘cute’ in my school uniform ……. really? or are you just being kind?
Maroon and grey sounds good and I definitely agree with you about the socks – white socks and shiny black lace-ups eek! I think the beret is the funniest bit. I think I only wore it for the first week.

    Hello Joy
I’m pleased you managed to get the soda pop black TSV before it sold out. I really did enjoy the show – I love the way Marie-Francoise is always smiling!
I think our summer uniform had a boater, but I don’t recall having one. After getting so little wear out of my beret, my Mum probably decided not to go to the expense!

    Hi Julia,
Not a relevant question I realise but I was wondering how you get in touch with Ali Young via email? I have a skin related question I would like to ask her about if possible. I know how busy she is but if she could just give me afew of her words of wisdom I would be VERY grateful! I like that she isn’t committed to a company in particular…unlike salon owners & store gals…lovely as they often are.
Many thanks & lovely blog about school days. Nice memories.
    Take care,

    Hi Susan
Is it something you can ask on her blog??
She has been VERY helpful to me over the last few months with my skin ‘issues’ – must be my age!
    Good Luck

    Hi Julia
I can remember my school uniform and my first day. We had navy skirt, white shirt, navy cardigan/v-neck jumper and a navy and mustard diagonal stripe tie, but the thing I hated the most was the navy raincoat with hood attached!! There was also a summer dress which was a bright green check with short sleeves and a round neck and I can remember Mum was a bit late buying mine and had to buy a larger size which was a bit too big round the neck, so she put two darts on the front of the neck and I hated that too!!
You asked on a previous post about Chris and I getting married. I suppose the intention was there when we got engaged and then my Dad went to sleep and I sort of pushed it to one side and we are pretty happy as we are, so why spoil it now, but then never say never, who knows eh?!
    Take care and speak soon

    Hi Julia,
Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to ask her a few things so thought it would be easier on a email. I will think about it. Just thought you might have all had work emails which I could send it to. It would be a real luxury to have access to her daily like you guys!!

    Hi JULIA
i agree school uniforms are smart, i think all school’s should have them it would save a lot hassle on a morning. Laura always had to wear one, but my god daughter’s little boy does not she can not wait till he does. I loved my uniform but in the winter Mam used to make me wear a hat i hated it by the time i got to the end of the street it was off and in the bag. IT was like when we were little you always had to have a vest on, how things change kids now are half dressed. Hope all is well.
    Love best wishes

    Hi Annette
Sounds like your school uniform was pretty similar to mine! Our summer dresses were originally a blue and white gingham but when the school turned into a Comprehensive we had a new uniform, pinafore dresses over nylon shirts in the winter ( horrible, and even worse if you were an early developer! ) and the summer dress material was on a royal blue background with sort of speckles of yellow and green. Sounds vile, but it was actually quite nice. The dresses were quite expensive so we bought the fabric and I made my own ( age 12 ) – trouble was I cut it a bit too short and was always getting told off for it!
I know what you mean about the wedding thing – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!!

    Hi Dorothy
The vest ………….. I don’t think todays children would know what to do with one. Mine always wore a vest and it’s not that long ago that they were little. It’s a brilliant garment for adding an extra layer of air to trap heat in the Winter – maybe we should all go back to wearing them, then we can all turn the central heating down a notch!

    Hi Susan
You are not a ‘numpty’!!! I had to check myself and yes just post something in the comments section. Alternatively if it’s something more private you could always send a ‘snail’ mail.

    Hi Steve
Yes that was my brother’s bike – mine was a much more sedate affair, a BSA as I recall. Don’t the garage doors date the photo!
Have just been away for a week so lots of swimming and Pilates mat work – Pilates TSV on Monday midnight so at least I’ll get to spend some proper time with Marjolein.
Good to hear your training is going well and good luck for your competitions when they come up.
Mum is improving – thanks for asking
