Thanks Ali!


Apple pieJust a quick blog today to say thanks to Alison Keenan and her generosity! Let me explain…

Last weekend Ali sent me a text and asked if I would like any cooking apples from the tree in her garden… yes please I replied! Because we don't see each other every day, I didn't pick the apples up from work until Tuesday night and then was too busy Wednesday and yesterday to make apple pie, so had to make time this morning before heading into work in approximately 30 minutes time.

It looks pretty good but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating tonight so I'll have to let you know! Ali and I were having a discussion about what we flavour the apples with. I think she prefers clove, but I always use cinnamon. Do you have a preference or do you just leave the apples plain?? The other big debate in our household is what to serve it with? Custard, cream or ice cream… decisions, decisions! If the apple pie is hot I like vanilla ice cream or custard, if it's cold I prefer cream.

All this talk of food is making me hungry and I'm not sure I'll have time for lunch! Must dash as I'm on with Stephanie for some Christmas Crafting at 4, and then Lulu Guinness handbags at 5. Just time to wish our lovely Craig Rowe a happy 40th birthday for tomorrow – it's the same day as my brother, but he has a few years on Craig! I hope they both have a fab day.

    Hi Julia, I’ve just got in from work and I’ve just been eating the remains of an apple crumble I made last night for dinner.BIG mistake as I’m supposed to be cutting back on the ole calories!!Hard to resist though,and like you if it’s cold I like abit of cream aswell oops!!My apple crumble is a Mary Berry one,and you add lemon zest to the apples and also sugar and a drop of water and then the crumble on top,and it’s yummy!!My husband knows Mary as he has done some printing for her in the past,he always insisted on doing the deliveries at her house as he was always offered a nice piece of fresh cake or scone!!!So cheeky.She kindly autographed me one of her cook books,kind and lovely lady.I have now got to find a new pudding for hubbys tea tonight or I’m in big trouble!!! best wishes yviex

    I made a apple pie with some apples in a cottages I was staying in Dorset. I must admit I like custard and ice-cream. Fab!

    Hi Julia, mmm Apple Pie you’ve got me drooling here! My inlaws had a big apple tree where they used to live and we used to come home from our summer visit with carrier bags full! I miss that now that they live in sheltered housing. My preference to have with apple pie is ice cream. If it wasn’t so calorific I would say clotted cream!!
    Ourselves we have been inundated with blackberries this year – good job we like them. I have frozen 2 big ice cream tubs full. Made jam,blackberry and apple flapjacks,summer puddings,crumbles and cooked some and froze some in small pots just big enough to take out and have with my porridge. I’m thinking of writing a book 101 things to do with blackberries!!
    I hope Craig has a great 40th Birthday.

    Hi Julia,
    The apple pie looks good enough to eat, I love apple pie, often keep mine plain, but will soon be adding some blackberries now that they are nearly ready to pick, that is if I get a chance, we often have our labradors with us and they love blackberries, they stand on their backlegs and pick them, it is so funny to see, I will have to teach them to put them in the container. I am like you custard if the pie is hot, or an extra sprinkling of sugar and some cream if cold. Enjoy the pie and your weekend.

    HiJulia, Yummy Yummy apple pie, it is one of my favourite pudds.I’m the same as you,if warm,custard or/and icecream and cream if cold.Reading your blog and looking at the photo made my mouth water. Do you cook or part cook your apples or put them in the pie raw? i part cook mine and just put sugar to taste.It’s a while since i cooked apple pie as i need a new element in my oven but now i’ve seen your pie i must get my cooker repaired.Hope theres some left for you when you get home.Love Babs xx

    Hope you managed to find ( or create ) a pudding for your hubbie’s tea …… if all else fails, fresh fruit and ice cream! I like the sound of a bit of lemon zest in with the apples. Personally I prefer apple crumble to apple pie but my son prefers pie – I’m such a pushover when it comes to my children!!

    I think Craig had a brilliant 40th birthday judging by his comments on twitter – I’m sure he will blog about it if he hasn’t already!
    I like the ice cream all ‘melty’ with hot apple pie ….yummy!
    You’re not getting an idea for a blackberry cook book based on the title of my book are you??? LOL!! Sounds like your blackberries have kept you busy – much better then your ‘Blackberry’ keeping you busy!

    Are you serious??? Do your labradors really eat blackberries? The only thing I don’t like about blackberries is getting scratched when picking them. I like them with apples in pie and crumble, and my dad used to make jam or bramble jelly ( without the pips ).

    It depends on the apples. If I am making a crumble to use up slightly overripe eating apples I don’t bother to cook them first, but with cooking apples I soften them with sugar, cinnamon and a splash of water for about five minutes first so that they mix well.
    We once went without an ‘oven’ for almost a year – tricky preparing meals for children using just the hob …. we didn’t replace it because we were about to redo our kitchen!

    Hi Martin
    We are all fine thanks – Daniel is really enjoying his coaching role with the Crystal Palace Academy u15’s. Sophie enjoys the independence of living away from home and we were able to give her and her flatmate, Gilly, an old flatscreen TV for their living room recently to make it more homely.

    That sounds delicious. Do you put pastry on the bottom, then the apples and custard, or just pastry on top of the apple and custard mixture? What happens to the custard when you bake it – I’m intrigued!
