Toby’s enthusiasm gets him into a spot of bother…

Toby with his bandaged paw

Thank you for the kind comments following my attempt to become the next Jacques Cousteau – my apologies if you are too young to remember him.

I hope many of you also had the opportunity to get away from it all. I’m a firm believer that we all need to do this – I’m not just talking about going abroad – I literally mean getting away from the stresses of the office, shop, factory etc and just doing something different and hopefully pleasant!

A time to re-charge the batteries and take stock is essential and most of us are guilty of not doing this often enough. It doesn’t have to be expensive either… anyway less of my preaching.

Whilst I was away playing with my underwater camera, Toby (our Bearded Collie) also had a seaside holiday and stayed with my Mum down in West Sussex. We’d only been gone a week when he decided to rip off one of his claws. Mum thinks he was waiting for us to come back and used to sit by her side gate for our arrival and would jump up at the wrought iron gates to greet any passers by. Apparently he had a few local admirers, and does get quite excited when anyone says hello to him. Anyway mum thinks this is when he must have caught his paw in the fancy scroll work.

He was in a lot of pain, so off they went to the vet who bandaged it up (see the photo above) and said “don’t let it get wet”. Poor Mum – if you remember it rained for two weeks and on top of that her twin sister was rushed into hospital.

Mum’s friends and neighbours were brilliant and offered to walk and even groom Toby while she was at the hospital. Toby healed pretty quickly, poor auntie is still in hospital, but I’m pleased to say is making a steady recovery.

The picture also shows Toby proudly showing off his pink rubber pig that my son Jack brought back for him. I think it matches his bandage beautifully!

Please feel free to share your holiday or pet stories as I know I speak for other blog readers when I say we love to read them!

Take care of yourselves and your pets.

Until next time,

Dale x

Hello Dale, great to see you looking so well after your holiday. Didnt Toby tell you that if you all left him he would create a scene,I had three pekinese and when we went on hoilday my sister took two and my mum who lived close to her,a garden lenght, they had a connecting gate, had the oldest of the three. They behaved until something told them we had come home, which was forty miles away, then all he.. broke loose, the older two would meet and decide it was time to go home and off they went,no pavements just a country road, they did this on the two occasions my family kept them. the youngest stopped eating from the Thursday till the Sunday, when we collected them, dont think they welcomed us ,we were ignored. Pekinese are very clever little beings,my mother was a nervous wreck and my sister was dead on her feet,I said just said “well we’re off” and they trotted out to the car without a backward glance. Poor Toby will learn not to hurt himself, but will show his distain for these people who left him behind. If its his dew claw it will heal quickly, some people remove these from puppies when days old,it can be a real nucience, hope he is better by now,or is he still making you pay? Marg.
