A bright energy-saving solution

Super Bright LED lightsI’ve been wrestling with an interesting, if slightly anoraky, problem for months and have finally found a solution.

In a bid to keep energy costs down and as the government has said they plan to phase out traditional incandescent light bulbs, I’ve been gradually replacing all the bulbs in our house with low energy ones.

The problem I had was that there wasn’t a suitable alternative for those halogen Dichroic spotlights (GU 5.3 MR16 fitting for the techies out there). LEDs seem to be the way forward but they simply weren’t bright enough (only providing accent lighting). But I finally found something…

… there are now Super LEDs! I just took delivery of some and they’re great – each "bulb” has 60 LEDs. The size is exactly the same as the standard spotlights and the light is clean and cool, offering nearly the same brightness.

Here’s the best bit: the old ones used 35 Watts each – the new ones just 2 Watts! And they last around 30 times longer.
As I firmly zip my anorak hood up, I calculate that I can save around £50 a year in electricity and help save the planet… zip!

    Dear Super-Anorak… I mean Simon!
Actually I wanted to thank you for the tip about super LEDs. We’re in the process of having our house renovated and looking for an energy efficient alternative to halogen spots so I’m off to hunt them down online…
Wishing you and your family a magical Christmas and a wonderful 2009!
