FIRST – SHANE FILAN COMP
What a way to kick off! After last week’s wonderful appearance on my Saturday Night Gifts show, here’s a super Shane Filan competition to win this signed CD kindly obtained by lovely Will IT. It’s Shane’s first solo album 504623, ‘You and Me Deluxe Edition’. Just leave a comment below and state you’d like to enter the random draw to win – (closes midday on 14th, announced in next blog on 15th. Full T&C’s here.)
Westlife wasn’t my era but after this performance, Shane’s CD joined the list of QVC CD purchases winging their way to my door, postage free! Wonderful vocals and some great singalong songs, self-penned by Shane in collaboration with some legendary writers/producers – a nice twist of pop meets country meets folk.
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes video in the run up to his going live. He’s such a lovely guy I have to say, and thanks to all those fans who tweeted me saying they really enjoyed the interview too! More fun this week with Dale! (see QVC section below)
For those who missed it – here he is on Saturday Night Gifts performing 'About You''

CATHERINE’S PLAY OPENS IN LONDON
And talking of performing, the new production of ‘Memory of Water’ opened this week in London starring none other than… our Catherine Huntley, my fellow presenter!
Now for those who don’t know, Catherine also starred in another play two years ago to rave reviews. Apparently the little theatre, in the Baron’s Court tube station area, wanted her back to do it again so she chose a new play, then co-produced and took a lead role in this tragi-comedy.
Fellow QVC gals and I went to see her on opening night on 5th. (see pic on the left – me, Ali K, Claire Sutton, Marverine, Sara Griffiths, our old colleague Anna Cookson fresh from her stint doing news on radio London, and of course the star herself, Catherine in the middle!)
I must admit it was very good – it’s still on, till 17th in fact – do go see her – they need some more support please! Just call box office to book – it’s only £12 and you pay cash on the door, it’s a tiny intimate venue and lends itself nicely to the matter covered in the play, namely, sisterhood, motherhood and relationships. That’s most of us then!
A special ‘well done’ to the lady who played the mother – an accomplished actress with a long CV – playing alongside a competent cast of pro and semi pro and amateur – often hard to tell them apart, all very watchable.
Well done Catherine! Call 02089324747 to book, Baron’s Court Theatre, in Barons Court/ West Kensington, W14 9HP
First, yes she is really 70.
Second, yes we do all look alike.
Third, sadly yes she also sounds just like me and my sister Linda Bignell (our Red Carpet Manicure Nails guest here on QVC!) especially when she laughs!
We even put ‘60th birthday’ balloons up as a gentle joke cos she looks so young! Although having spent tons on the banner, she said she hadn’t even noticed it!
Bless! Even her brother came all the way from Bath for the event, so a good night was had by all! We had a second family meal the next night too – a wonderful time for my lovely mum.
I even – and this was a BIGGIE for me, as you’ll know if you’re a regular! – I even stayed over on the morning of her birthday so I could bring her tea in bed – at 8.30! – so she wasn’t alone when she opened the rest of her cards and pressies.
My gift to her was a deluxe ‘wanda’ Lulu Guinness black and velvet bag with a bow, plus of course contributing to the cost of her place on our Flint-girls' trip to Center Parcs next week – in a villa with a hot tub! It’s going to be great fun! More pics in the next blog!
Kathy had some fun this week! She says – "there was a funny moment at the end of my midday hour last Thursday when I tried to swipe the screen of the TV that the touchscreen HP laptop Danny and I were selling was connected to. We both had a bit of a laugh!"
Second helping this week is Craigys appearance with SBC – and he knew this would make the cut too!
Still to come… Elemis sets for men… Skechers shoes for men?…and guess who’s on Saturday Night Gifts this week with Dale with a product called ‘HIM’?!…

Countdown Continues – to the prequel of Hawaiian Affair – still getting five star reviews -
“Forget the plans for the day, sit down with a tea/coffee and lose yourself in the up and down world of Sadie the business woman. I started Hawaiian Affair thinking I would read a couple of pages whilst having my morning coffee and before the household chores took over my life. WRONG!
I was grabbed straightaway by the novel and could not put it down. It is the best page turning read I have read in a very long time. Congratulations to Debbie Flint on her first novel and a very big thank you for a read to remember.”
Amazon review of Hawaiian Affair, Nov 2013, from Olwyn
Book of the Week – ‘Cry from the Grave’ by Carolyn Mahony
Another wonderful debut from ‘cosy crime’ author Carolyn Mahony, a fellow self-pub novice who has been writing for over fifteen years now but this is her first published novel – available on Amazon.
It’s a lovely read, keeps you turning pages and has some great twists in it!
"Six years ago a dreadful tragedy overturned Hannah’s life. Now a grim discovery in a local garden threatens her fragile existence – still dealing with her abusive ex-husband and still yearning to find out the truth.
Natasha’s unhappy childhood has haunted her throughout her life. Her marriage to Adam was the one good decision she made, but a when a terrifying secret rears its head, the past begins to threaten the future.
Adam Campbell is in turmoil. Loyal to his wife, he finds himself drawn to the mysterious woman who has suddenly turned their lives upside down.
When the truth will not stay buried, tragedy isn't far behind."
Here’s one review from one of my lovely ladies on my beta-readers group who bought it after our Hallowe’en book party online.
Carolyn says – "Would I recommend Self-Publishing? Definitely. It's so difficult in the publishing world today that agents are very reluctant to take on a new author unless you're very lucky, or have a great book AND the right contacts!
More and more agents and publishers are looking at how well people are doing as self-published authors first, and then approaching THEM rather than us chasing the agent/publisher. Also the royalties in self-publishing if your book does well, are brilliant. Plus I’ve had some fabulous reviews and feedback already – am keen to find out what your readers think!"
Go here to get your eBook of ‘Cry From the Grave’ – Carolyn’s made it just 99p for a week, especially for us!

Writers & Artists’ Self-Publishing Seminar – getting published the indie way.
As promised, some tips from the all-day event I went to in London last weekend, for writers interested in the burgeoning phenomenon of self-publishing. Here are just a few nuggets from the day -
Facts – from Alison Baverstock’s talk (author and publishing expert)
- self-publishing is not all amateurs: 42% have/had traditional publishing deals.
- 59% (Society of Authors survey) used professional editors’ services (eg Society of Editors and Proofreaders) meaning it’s a better standard than it used to be.
- Find out more in her ‘How-To Book’ for beginners about Self-Publishing , The Naked Author.
- Look at BookBub.com to target specific audiences
- Focus on creating relationships not spamming everyone to buy your book, share others’ info first and be generous. Go to Joanna's Twitter page – @thecreativepenn – to see her examples!
And she recommends ‘Goodreads for Authors’ – with shortcuts galore on how to use this exploding reading and book recommendation site to full effect.
Tracy’s top-tip was to find the top 100 book reviewers on Amazon and if they have blogs, contact them to ask if they’d review her book if she sent them one for free. As her book was such a good concept, 15 did, and it really helped. Her ‘Noone Has Sex on a Tuesday’ is a top seller!
Then, Jon also interviewed another self-pub success story, Mel Sherratt, whose top-tip was to make sure your first 10% is excellent and completely proof-perfect, as that’s going to be seen on the free ‘Look Inside’ service, and is what many people go by when making up their mind whether to buy.
All in all a very good day’s work and lots of new tips gleaned about how to sell more novels!

Next week on this book segment, Joanna (JF) Penn’s new novella ‘One Day in Budapest’…
- Skechers' Richard needs your help! Do watch this clip, then respond at the bottom of this blog in the comments section – it’s a very easy question, and a very good question, indeed! It’s very simple to leave a comment. The more the better, I’ll pass them all on to the buyers and to Richard! (P.S I’d add ‘& wider foot too!)
Don’t forget – especially if you’ve never left a comment before but would love to see some wider foot shoes and men’s styles! You never know what crowd-impact will do!
Plus, some wonderful articles internationally – like this one from Bloomberg’s Megan McArdle on QVC’s manual for survival in the Amazon Era.
Daily Mail reported that QVC – yes, QVC – came SECOND behind John Lewis in the most trusted UK brands survey! Whoop! Keep spreading the word if you can too! Copy this link to Facebook or tweet it for us!: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2489258/The-brands-earned-nations-trust-John-Lewis-heads-list.html
- Devon Delights I met up with Alix, my writing pal, again this week, on the way to the writing retreat. We took a break from writing and planning our November 28th book launch party, (save the date, remember!) and went for a coffee in the lovely BirdCage café in the centre of Chagford, where we had a really nice chat with readers and QVC viewers Carole and Annie!
Apparently it’s a regular celeb haunt – Jennifer Saunders and family, Kirsty Allsop, Caroline Quentin, Ade Edmonson and so on – and does a very nice cappuccino the girls said!
- What’s your mental age? Also doing the rounds this week, a test you can take to find out your mental age – seriously good! My mental age is 35!! I knew it! #NotAGrownUpYet. What’s yours? Go to www.mymentalage.com to find out more with some fun questions!
For those who haven’t been following my blog of late, Pirate’s a three paw’d kitten who’s stolen our hearts!
His latest escapades got me laughing out loud – I literally ‘LOL’d’!
Plus this one is cool, too – caption – ‘guess who I supported tonight!’ #xFactorFan Hehe!
When do all of you write yours? Or don’t you write them anymore now we’ve got digital methods to wish ‘Merry Christmas’?!
Then you realise you’d have to actually cut into it and eat it and suddenly it’s not quite such a good idea! Lol! I saw it on Facebook this week.
QUESTION – if you could have an animal cake, what would it be? Mum’s birthday cake was made by my daughter’s skilled boyfriend Nick, (who made son Brad and Kari’s wedding cake – see here for wedding blog with pics) – this time it was coffee and walnut. Once again, it was delicious!
- Alfie Update – And talking of dogs, here’s the latest update on Alfie, the poorly puppy whose heart was broken, but was then fixed thanks to ‘crowd-funding’ – you can see the x-ray of his pacemaker now beating away inside this lovely spaniel’s little body. (See previous blogs for his heart-string-tugging story).
His owner Tony writes here that he’s on the road to recovery and thanks to everyone who helped out (hope you can read it if you click on it!).
I love a happy ending, don’t you?!
WATCH – Philomena – starring Steve Coogan and Judi Dench
New out at the cinema this week, Philomena tells the story of an Irish mother searching for her long lost baby, and the washed-up, real-life story of journalist Martin Sixsmith. He reports on her tale and helps her find her boy 50 years later – high up in United States officialdom.
Funny, moving and excellent performances from both – according to our ‘guest reviewer’!
Now I’m so busy finishing my new novel (did I say there’s only three weeks to go? Lol!) that I haven’t had time to see it so I’ve drafted in a short review from our lovely xmas lights and gifts guest on QVC – Gill Gauntlett who says -
"Philomena is quite simply the best film I’ve seen in ages! I cried my eyes out and laughed out loud in the same breath. I love Judi Dench more than ever and Steve Coogan is brilliant!"
So I guess that’s five stars from Gill! If you’ve seen it, add your comment below and be my other guest reviewers this week!
QVC – SNEAKY PEEK – RED CARPET MANICURE
As you know I’m a massive RCM fan! Well, it’s back! Join me midnight on Wednesday 20th to launch the new set from this amazing long lasting gel set, which has protected my nails so well, they’re a lovely length at the moment.
Sis @LindaBignellQVC will bring us a new portable LED light to ‘cure’ the special light-sensitive varnishes which come in some fab winter colours – watch out for me wearing them in between now and then!
QVC – SHHHHH!
As you’ll know from last week’s blog, I’m counting down till next weekend’s Bargain bonanza (16th/17th) with a ‘fruity-based’ TSV (hope it lasts till my 11pm show!) and Elemis’s massive Xmas TSV set – it’s truly a gifting dream, that much I can say, with its exotic body-care element!
And little birds tell me there’ll be maximum EZ pay and buyMoreSaveMore! Hope the little birds aren’t telling porkies! Lol. There’s even a pack for men launching too! Watch out for the pre-launch Elemis shows – e.g. with me at 10pm Saturday 16th November.
(P.S. Plus if you’re a Geller-Girl, put 15th Dec in diary!)
Meanwhile, here’s Craigy with Will talking men’s skincare from Elemis, as only Will and Craigy can!
QVC – THIS WEEK – whilst I’m away on hols finishing my novel for its 28th November launch, here are some highlights from the coming week on air – remember to check out the TV GUIDE on our home page.
- Celine Dion full interview will be in the Monday morning show on the day of release, 11th, 9am. But join Dale on Saturday Night Gifts (8-10pm on the 9th) for another five min chat about her new CD, 'Loved me Back to Life', from when he met her in Florida recently!
And remember if it’s a gift to be opened on xmas day, the fabulous money back guarantee lasts for 30 days till 25th January! Bargain or what!

So – I’m off to my writing retreat and then to Center Parcs for a week’s hol with mum and the girly relatives in a villa with a hot tub, more next week! Look after yourself and have a fab week.
