Special Days Galore!

Upcoming Ronni Nicole TSVCan you believe we're halfway through February already and what a busy week it has been with 'Pancake Day' and 'Valentine's Day' just twenty four hours apart! It's kind of a shame that Shrove Tuesday came first, particularly if you gave up chocolate for Lent!

The excitement for this week isn't over yet as on Friday and Saturday we have our two-day Spring Fashion event. Loads of our fashion ranges will be featuring, including Kipling, Lulu Guinness, Yong Kim and Birkenstock, plus two great TSVs, Antthony Designs on Friday and Ronni Nicole on Saturday – if the weather is miserable in your part of the UK stay in and let us cheer you up.

Fashion is one of my favourite things to present at QVC, along with jewellery and beauty. I had a little knowledge about fashion and dressmaking when I started at QVC in 1993 (well done to all of you who answered correctly in last week's competition) but I had no idea about professional salon skincare ranges until I met our beauty expert Alison Young. I always remember her coming into my dressing room when I had only known her a few weeks, and going through my skincare cupboard… she put most of it in the bin!

Alison YoungI have always been grateful to her for her advice but never more so than when my skin went through a hissy fit in 2009 and she was on hand to help me through it. The whole distressing episode is chapter 53 in my book, my age when it happened, but here is just a small extract.

"By this time, the red raised skin was almost covering my entire face and neck, and I was embarrassed to be seen out in public.

I remember getting on the early morning easyJet flight to Alicante on the 3rd of January feeling tearful and pulling my hair around my face to hide it. It was meant to be a five-day break but almost immediately I knew we had made a mistake as, far from helping my skin, the warm January Spanish sun just made it itchier.

I couldn't sleep at all and spent most of the night sitting watching television, to try and take my mind off my skin, and crying. The next morning I begged Chris to take me home."

What Alison says: "When Julia came to me with her skincare concerns, I went through a thorough consultation with her and we looked at what skincare and make-up products she was currently using and what ingredients were in all of them to see what might be causing the irritation and sensitivity – and she's right, some of them did have to go in the bin!

These products might have been good for her in the past but something was causing her problems! The best thing for her was to strip her routine right back – sometimes right down to a single oil application and I then gave her more products to use with only very simple ingredients in them."

As I mentioned last week, I'll be revealing a different extract each week until the book launches on air at the beginning of March – and it's now available on Advanced Order online (image coming soon). But now time to announce the winner of last week's competition… it's Julia Jenkins from Llanelli in Wales – congrats! I will be sending you your prize at the beginning of March. For everyone else, here's your second chance to win a personally signed copy.

Simply answer the following question: What brand is Julia's favourite hand cream?

To enter, email your answer with your full name and address to competitions_uk@qvc.com before next Thursday (21st). We won't be able to publish any answers that get posted here or they will give the answer away! I will reveal the winner next Friday in my blog and the winning prizes will all be sent out at the beginning of March when the stock is delivered to our warehouse. Good luck!

    Hi Julia
Like Pauline I have just ordered your book on advanced orders…the last competition I won was ‘Who Shot JR!’, so any chance of winning a copy is….well, zero, me thinks!
Unfortunately, I came down with Chris’ cold/flu, starting with a very sore throat, the worst day being Tuesday, with quite a high temperature and my face was literally burning up, it felt so sore, I didn’t know what to do with it.
Spent most of the day sleeping on the sofa, wrapped in my trusty Slanket and Bobby by my side, funny how animals know when there’s something wrong, he was so quiet all day, when usually he’s in and out. I think he was looking after me, but he has taken a shine to the old Slanket, so it was maybe more to do with that than anything else! When I wasn’t sleeping, I was sneezing, coughing and spluttering and I have never taken my inhaler so much.
I had already ordered the shopping to be delivered that night, when Chris was home, but it arrived before he did, so out came the anti-bac and the sweat poured off me…I’ve never felt so rough and probably looked it too…must invest in a Ken Paves hair piece lol!
Today, I’m feeling much better, although left with a very tickly cough.
Sorry to hear that you have had it too, how weird is that, hope you’re feeling much better…I knew there was something wrong when Chloe was doing B&W and not you!
    Get Well Soon, Julia!

    Hi Julia
Ordered your book on advanced order as I definitely wanted a signed copy. Age can be a funny thing and you think as you get older that your skin will settle down but not always so. Thank goodness Ali was on hand as she is the beauty guru and was able to help you.
First book choice in our Pilates ( or as one lady calls it Pirates not sure why as we are not made to walk the plank lol) is the Great Gatsby. Not sure about this one still that’s the challenge.
Can’t remember you fave hand cream as it could be one of 3 so am not entering this week.
    Hope you feel better soon!

Julia, not sure if you have heard of this or not but may help with night time coughing. To stop night time coughing in a child or adult, put Vicks VapoRub generously on the soles of your feet, cover with socks, and the heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.
Hope this help….. Sylvia, Aberdeenshire x

Really enjoyed the last two days of QVC, lots of my favourites on. Yong Kim clothes are great and as for Lulu Guinness handbags, they are something else, beautiful bags.
Have managed to advance order your book, looking forward like many others to reading it.
I understand you have not been well, hope you will soon be feeling better.

Hi Julia, hope you are feeling better, It sounds like the virus I had just before christmas, felt awful and took a while before I felt myself again.I work at the local primary school and I seem to pick every nasty germ that the little ones have !!I have ordered your book and look forward to reading it. As for your rash on your face, my husband had something very similar, it started around his eyes and spread across his face, red and itchy and the sunshine and heat made it worse, the doctor gave him some cream but made it worse!!We tried everything and it went on for weeks, I suggested he clean his skin with my Liz Earle cleanse and polish , and out of desperation he tried it. Within two days the rash had gone, YAY!!!he still uses it (but he has to buy his own) and calls it a miracle in a bottle!Well its sunday today and the weather outside is sunny and clear blue skies, looking out of my bedroom window, I can see for miles and miles, the birds are singing and my primulas are growing in the garden, lets hope spring is on its way, but according to the weather report ITS NOT !! Going to get cold again , oh well !! bye. love Yviex

    Hi Julia
Gosh, I can well imagine how you must have felt with your skin trauma. Thank goodness for Ali Young ……. and so say all of us! It’s good to know that we can blog Ali through her Beauty Fix shows with any concerns. I’ve often heard her say how perfectly normal skin can suddenly go hay wire in the menopause, etc.
On a lighter note, I did laugh when Alexis from L’Occitane outed you last week re David Ginola! Your face was a picture!! Remember when you blagged on air to my Chris about how I liked Dale when I did the Elemis show with you last year?!! KARMA Julia, KARMA!! LOL!!
Right then, I’m off to enter that competition again. Think I know the answer cos it’s also one of my favourite hand creams ……. after Elemis of course!
    Take care

    Hi Annette
There’s still plenty of opportunity to win a personalised signed copy with a competition this week and for the next two weeks before launch on the 4th of March ……. Maybe J & R are your lucky letters?
Sorry to hear you got the flu, it’s horrible isn’t it? Mine started with the cough, and I still have it. I spent all day Friday and Saturday in bed and like you I had a little four legged companion …. Poppy never left my side. They just know don’t they.
Still not at work today cos of the cough but feeling a bit better and should be back by Thursday. I am not a very good patient I’m afraid.
Hope your cough is subsiding a bit now?

    Hi Joy
Ali was absolutely brilliant once I had got my skin calmed down with steroid tablets and ointments ……. as you can imagine I was very nervous about trying any beauty products but with her advice we introduced them gradually over about a six month period.
Still laughing about you calling Pilates ‘Pirates’ – you may not walk the plank but do you ever do the ‘plank’ for your core muscles? I think you might like the question for the next competition

Thanks for keeping watching QVC and for posting on here

    Hi Laura
I’m honoured this week, two of my ladies ‘posting’ for the very first time, and someone else who has been with QVC since day one ……. that really is loyalty! There have been ( and still are) lots of changes but hopefully you’ll agree most of them are for the best.
It’s nice to be missed but I wish I was at work rather than feeling ill at home …….. I’m sure Chris would second that remark, as I said to someone earlier I am a terrible patient!
Hoping you’ll enjoy the book and that you will post again

    Hi Sylvia
Did you tweet me this as well? I’ve done it for the past two nights and I must say it appears to work. Vicks Vaporub on my feet, flight socks, went to sleep about 11 and slept through to 6 no coughing BUT coughed a lot when I woke up. It’s really annoying me now and feels very tender and still very blocked.
Thanks for the tip and I hope others will try it

    Hello Jean
So pleased you enjoyed the Spring Fashion event and so disappointed I couldn’t be part of it – I was supposed to be presenting both Yong Kim and Lulu Guinness amongst others. This has been a really aggressive flu bug but it is the lingering cough that is driving me mad. My son Dan has it too ….. poor Chris.
Pleased to hear you have ordered the book, I hope you will enjoy it

    Hi Yvie
I’m feeling a bit better but not quite right. It’s a nasty flu bug alright, I spent Friday and Saturday in bed (unheard of for me) ……. my sister in Scotland had it over New Year and was exactly the same and she’s made of stern stuff.
My psoriasis was too far gone even for Cleanse and Polish which I had always been an advocate of. After I’d finished with the steroids Ali Young had me using pure base oils for months before she started introducing beauty products again. If you’ve ever doubted that anti-ageing products work leave them out for six months and notice how quickly your skin’s appearance improves once you start using them again.
I think you are right about the weather – it may look Springlike but there was a frost on the cars this morning.

So I sent you a tweet and then tried to re send it on here so that others would see it and then I read the message that it will appear once checked!!!!! Oops!!!
Also for anyone who wants to try the pilates machine…. I say go for it! I have had mine for a few years and only used it for the first time a week or so ago and loved it. Trying to work out why it has taken me so long. I have misplaced the pilates videos but I am sure I will find them once I have started spring cleaning. Speaking of spring, it is a bonnie day in Aberdeenshire today… long may it continue. Sx

Marjolein is over this coming weekend so looking forward to seeing her at 2pm on Sunday – hoping I’ll be able to get on the machine if I can stop coughing for long enough!

    Hi Julia
Hope you are well enough to return to work and have plenty of water by your side. The tickly cough is by far the worst as it can creep up on you when least expected, says she coughing and spluttering whilst typing this! The only good thing about it is that it gives the old tummy muscles a workout.
I have got a couple of boxes of those tiny boiled sweets that are near the checkout at M&S and find the odd one helps, although don’t have too many for fear of their adverse side effects, as Chris found out, having nearly eaten a box of them!
Didn’t even click about the ‘JR’ initials when I wrote earlier. I have however entered the competition again though, as you said they could be lucky!
Oh, yesterday I ventured onto my pilates machine for the first time after the hand operation and did a few gentle exercises with the straps, which I’m quite pleased about.
