When you're a parent it's amazing how quickly time goes…. I've no idea where the last school year has gone? Flown by!
My children have finally broken up for the summer holidays and we have some lovely days ahead of us planned. We're not going abroad or away this year. We're staying local (staycation is the term I think!) and have planned some day trips with the puppies Misty and Bramble, family and friends.
We've started the hols with a really lazy morning. We've popped on the Nintendo Wii and have been playing Mario Brothers. I then reminded my two what computer gaming looked like thirty years ago and dug out my old Space Invaders game from when I was a little boy… we put some batteries in and it worked a treat. My son thrashed me!
It's at this time of year I always recall leaving school, just as I turned 16 years. It was, without question, one of the happiest days ever. Primary and middle school I enjoyed but secondary school I loathed. I remember, like it was yesterday, that unsettling 'gut' feeling which would start to emerge Sunday afternoon as Monday morning loomed.
That summer I promptly destroyed all of my school books and uniform. I do actually regret getting rid of my school coursework as some of it turned out quite well. I'm not sure what happened to the school tie but that went too!
Then it was the patient wait for my GCSE results…. I'm rather ashamed to say that at the time I didn't care what results I achieved (not a good example to set, I should add) until it dawned on me….. what am I going to do?! Then it was a sharp reality check and decisions needed to be made!
I retook a couple of GCSEs and then looked for work. I settled into an apprenticeship as an upholsterer. A few years into this my Mum saw an advert for a new radio station setting up on the Isle of Wight…. Presenting was always my ambition and dream job so I wrote a letter, made a demo tape (which was beyond shocking!) and phoned a few days later and begged them to see me.
They were on a tight budget so I persuaded them to take me on as tea boy and errand boy, on a YTS scheme….. Well, after more, lengthy, persuasive discussion they agreed, so I hung up my apron and my dream career began!
Twenty three years later I'm still loving what I do!
