So three months into the big hair marathon and I think I've shed a few tears! I'm actually surprised to say that I've really enjoyed each stage so far – which seems to go rather quickly as I've stepped through goodness knows how many styles these last 12 or so weeks!
One question I get asked time and time again is why? Why am I growing my hair? Well, not that I think one needs a reason, but I do think there are a few. I always used to have long hair in my 20s but invariably wore it tied back, however, here we are 20 years later and the products and tools available to us are so much more sophisticated and able than ever before.
With every hair show I've done over the last couple of years, I've found a little voice in the back of my head saying 'it can work for you too!!' I've LOVED having pixie short hair for the last 15 or so years. I've done lots of fun things but more recently the fun started to dwindle and I found it less inspiring – perhaps I've grown out of the short hair! Ha ha! Who knows?!
What I CAN tell you though is that so far so good! I'm using totally different products than I've used in years, I've reintroduced myself to a hairbrush and the art of blow drying, and as my hair is wavy (which is what allowed me to do so much when it was short) my hair straighteners are happy to be in action on a daily basis (thanks to Percy and Reed's heat protective spray!). So, one day at a time – let's see how long it'll go before I get bored. Hopefully I won't and it'll be ok.
Talking of products, I'm using way less than ever before AND taking a lot less time with my hair! The maintenance is WAY less than it was when it was short!!! Everyone I know with long hair says their hair is high maintenance, but you never wake up looking like a bog brush and within seconds you can sweep it out of the way, whereas short ALWAYS needs styling in order for it to actually look half decent and my colour (now that my hair is longer) is lasting nearly three times as long… partly helped by the fact that I'm very close to my natural colour now – it's those twinkling silvers that I try to ignore!
So as quite a few of you on the blog here and also on Twitter have been joining in with growing your hair too, here are some pics as requested charting the first three months of the marathon. Not yet Rapunzel but we're on the way! Hang on in there and remember at every stage, your hair has different needs.
The product that worked great on your hair a couple of months ago, might not be so good now. Products I'm finding fabulous at the moment are Percy & Reed "No Oil Oil" (above) for fine hair as well as their Heat Protective Spray as I straighten it a lot.
Also Richard Ward's Shampoo and Conditioner for fine but plentiful hair … and I love Liz Earle's new hair serum (launching on QVC UK on April 12th …so keep your eyes peeled!!)
Pop Sunday June 2nd in your diary as I've a beauty show which has been written way ahead of time to feature all my favourite products. We'll be talking hair in that hour alongside my favourite skincare and make-up products so it should be fast and furious because there was a very long list!!
And just one more thing … if you're having a bad hair day, hair rarely looks great when you get out of bed (might seem an obvious point, but it's true!) So make the most of the tools and products available because they really make the hugest difference – my hair would look terrible if I didn't!!
Now, I've got to pack my hand luggage as we are off to Tenerife in the morning! My straighteners and Percy and Reed hairspray (another great rediscovery of mine!) will be last in and first out!!
See you back on air, Friday 19th April xx
