Raising money for ‘Help For Heroes’

Julia's daughter Sophie for 'Help For Heroes' On last week's blog, I put up a picture of me taken during the Eighties which was an Athena poster and it prompted Susan to comment about the variety of different things I have done in my life and how lucky I am. Looking back I have to say I sometimes can't believe that I actually did some of the things, they seem so long ago… well  let's face it, some of them are!!!!

From the early beginnings of being on the cover of the Bero Cookery Book aged 10, the dancing career, being a club DJ in London, the record deal, teaching fitness, The Price is Right and so much more, I can honestly say I have really enjoyed the variety – never a dull moment!
It hasn't always been easy, particularly when I was doing predominantly TV commercials and a little bit of modelling, because you have to go to auditions/castings and you have to learn to deal with rejection. The trick is not to take it personally – you just didn't meet the criteria of what the producer or client had in mind.
It looks like Sophie will follow me with her choice of career, having already been in two girl bands and performed at the O2. She's also hoping to do something I have never done and that is to appear in a calendar… and for this she needs your help. Let me explain.

How you can help…

You may well have read in previous blogs that Sophie's boyfriend is in the army. He is a Colour Sergeant in the Coldstream Guards and his tours of duty have included both Iraq and Afghanistan .When Sophie saw an advertisement looking for models with links to the Armed Forces, for the 'Pin-Up for Heroes' 2011 calendar she didn't hesitate.

This year's calendar raised over £5,500 for the 'Help For Heroes' charity and it was its first year. The theme for the 2011 calendar is 'forces sweethearts', with the final calendar shots being in a Forties/Fifties pin-up style. She was selected to be one of the final 30 girls, out of over 200 who applied, to attend a test shoot. With a bit of research and some help from my Mum, Sophie chose her look and went off to the photo session – the result of which you can see here.
If you would like Sophie to be one of the final 12 to feature in the calendar, please click on the link below and give Sophie a 'thumbs up' (voting ends at midnight on 31st May).
Thanks in advance and I'll let you know how she gets on.
Much love,
Julia x

    Hi Julia
Sophie has got my ‘thumbs up’! I fully support the Armed Forces and all they do.
I have been doing alot of research into my Dad’s time in India and Burma during the war, he was a Sergeant in the REME’s and my most precious possession is an Indian Silver Tankard presented to him by the W.O.’s & Sgt’s Mess, 1002 West African Mobile Workshops, 81st West African Division 1943-1945. He always said the REME’s never got the recognition they deserved during the war.
I posted some old photos of him on ww2chat.com forum and a lovely gentleman managed to clean them up a bit for me and even told me where my Dad and buddies were having a drink, by zooming in on a menu on the blackboard at the rear of a photo. It’s amazing what you can do with today’s technology. It’s quite a good website and makes some interesting reading.
Good Luck to Sophie and what a proud Mum you must be!

Thank you so much for the time you spent with me at QVC, you are so nice and easy to talk too, you made me feel like I”ve known you all my life. It was great meeting you.
Iam back home and all is ok, no truble with the return flight, it is hot here now and the garden needs lot of work, but I”ll always have time to watch QVC. Best of luck to Sophie.
    Much love.

I have sent in my vote for Sophie and I hope she is chosen, she is a beautiful girl. I would like to just say too that you are looking fantastic, on the Kathy van Zeeland show your hard work with exercise etc, is really showing. I too am still keeping going with my gym training, but I have to pay my personal trainer, hope Dan is giving you a mum’s discount.

Hi, Sophie looks pretty good in the picture.
I saw your show last night with the TSV,your looking good too,i can see you have lost some weight it seems to have come off all of a sudden. I know you said you wear a size medium in Tiana B and Ronnie Nicole dresses as i do, and they are looking ok on you now a nice fit,and its good they have that little extra support under the dresses for a sleeker finish.I am dieting at the moment but not with Diet Chef, and the weight is coming off nicely. Iam flying to Alicante on saturday morning for 2 weeks hope i can be good while i am away.
    All the best

    Hello Annette
Thanks for the thumbs up for Sophie.
OK – another coincidence. My Dad was raised in India as his Dad was in the Army! My Dad was actually an NCO in the RAF and spent time during the war in India and Burma as well as being stationed here in England.
I might have a look at that website when I get a moment as I would be really interested to know more about that period of his life now that he is no longer here to tell us the stories.
Wouldn’t it be funny if their paths had crossed!?!

Thanks for voting for Sophie and she says thanks for the lovely compliments.
Dan doesn’t give me a discount!!!!!!! – but that’s because I don’t pay him for his advice. I hope he doesn’t read this or he might start to get ideas ………..
Thankyou for noticing how hard I’ve been working – it isn’t just about losing lbs it’s about shaping up too and that is tough! I am within 2 lbs of my original ‘goal’ now but I may go for a further half a stone as long as it doesn’t make my face too thin.
Keep up the good work yourself

    Hello Samantha
Thanks for the thumbs up for Sophie – I will pass on the compliment.
I started my healthy eating programme with Diet Chef, and now dip in and out of it – it has really opened my eyes to portion control!
In the gym I am back on my Pilates machine at least 3 times a week but I am also walking on the treadmill ( varying speed and elevation ) for 25 minutes with wrist weights on and Daniel has given me some side stretch exercises to try and target my waist – that is proving to be the trickiest place to shape!
I am 2lbs off my original target weightloss of 20lbs but have decided to go for another half a stone ………. I hope!

    Hi Kathryn
Thanks for your support for Sophie much appreciated.
My weightloss has been gradual – I have been losing steadily since 1st March an average of one and a half pounds a week. Maybe it’s more noticeable now because I have the confidence to wear snugger fitting clothes again.
Enjoy your holiday in Spain – I am also flying out there on Saturday so we both have to behave ourselves!! – dietwise I mean.

    Hi Julia
Just read this on the net because I heard things were bad
The administrator of Crystal Palace FC and the administrators for the company which owns the ground, have sealed a deal in principle with HBOS to save the club.
Hopefully that will ease the worries. Dont think you and me are big fans of banks esepcially as far as football clubs are concerned! No furthur forward on that front for Rangers really although our Management team have signed new contracts which was a boost but still looks like we are going to lost a few out of contract players. Kris Boyd for one who has been out top scorer in the last 4 or 5 seasons so he will be very tough to replace. Apparently we do have a little bit of money to spend and there is still talk of a takeover going ahead. Fingers crossed – more for your team then mine at present.

    Hi Julia
My goodness, stranger things have happened, it would have been funny!
My Dad didn’t talk much about the war, but he did get very emotional once when Chris took him to RAF Cosford and he got talking to an old chap who showed him where he sat as a gunner in one of the planes. He started to tell me about it, then broke down.
He did tell me one tale and that was that he cashed a cheque for ‘David Niven’ during the war and only wished that he could have afforded to keep it…. now wouldn’t that have been something and he was my favourite actor of that time, very suave!
I hope you do get chance to have a look and find out more about your Dad’s time and maybe post a few questions, somebody will answer.

    Hi Julia
I watched one of your Diet Chef shows over the weekend, I was very impressed! at first i thought here we go with another deprivation type diet that will ultimately slow down you metabolic rate and cause weight gain in the end. but i was very impressed with all the accurate information you was giving, i think its very easy to calorie count and know what is going in but very difficult to know how much you are using through out the day!
you are 100 percent right in saying to keep around 1200-1600 calories a day, and keep your protien levels up this will keep the muscles active and muscle is an active tissue so it will burn fat through out the whole the day and night. From a fitness stand point you have lost weight but crucially in the right places which is key to being in shape and keeping your killer curves, i am so impressed x
A big thumbs up for Sophie! of course she will make the final, she has her mums good looks! a great cause too, i think it would be a great idea to get all the QVC presenters to do a charity calendar would great way to promote the seasonal products too! now who could be miss July!!!.

I don’t know about me knowing my stuff, you clearly do! I was adamant that I wanted people to follow the regime properly and eat extra if they are very active. The last thing I would ever want to encourage is yo-yo dieting …….. it has to be a commitment to a healthier you!

Yeah it sounds a bit more promising now for Palace. I thought we had been linked with Darren Ambrose the other day, but later discovered it was QPR. Do English papers not realise ‘we’ are Rangers not some mediocre English team lol I was disappointed becuase Ambrose is a decent player. There were a few surprise names in the England squad. I’m with you on Heskey nd feel Darren Bent would have beeen a better bet. You will be getting all ready for your hol to Spain now. Hope you have a great time…. then the footie starts after that. No doubt I’ll speak to you soon about it and maybe wind you up too!
    Take care

Hi Julia. Think you look amazing well done with your weight loss. i read your blogg too late to give Sophie my vote, like you she also looks amazing, fingers crossed she’s successful. My Son is on his second tour of Afghanistan and any help the Help for Hereos Charity gets is always appreciated by them all out there, as is any parcels that are sent out to the boys and girls serving on tour. I send my Son a parcel every week, pix n mix are one of his favs. Just a reminder from home really and also to let them know they are constantly thought of. They all share their goodies in their parcels as some soldiers are lucky and get more parcels than others. I miss and worry about him constantly, as a parent you can imagine. ANGELA (London)

I have become so much more aware of our Armed Forces since Sophie started seeing her boyfriend – about 20 months now. They do a great job and I have nothing but admiration for you and all the other families left at home to worry.
Sorry you didn’t get the chance to cast your vote for Sophie, but the good news is that she will be in the calendar, so watch this space as I will keep you posted as to when it will be available to purchase.

There is only one Rangers!!! and anyway Darren Ambrose is not going anywhere if the papers are to be believed – not sure I do though! I think we will be extremely lucky if we start next season with a similar team to the one that kept us up!!
No Rio now, but actually I was quite disappointed that Dawson was left out so let’s hope he justifies his late call-up!
Starting to feel a bit nervous now, but looking forward to kick-off nonetheless!

I love the picture of you in you school uniform.I too went to school in West Bridgford, firstly to Jesse Gray (Jo Pegg, the Headmaster, was very strict),then to the Heymann up Wilford Hill,as we lived on the Loughborough Road.My family went to Musters Road Methodist Church and my elder sister and I attended Sunday School there. We left Nottingham in 1959 to live in Kent.My sister and I learnt to play the piano, our teacher,Miss Brodhurst, living in Musters Road too. What a small world eh?Happy Days!My father came from Kirkby-in-Ashfield and my mother from Long Eaton,Derbyshire.Sadly dad died some years ago now and we lost our dear mum in March this year. However my sister and I have fond memories of Nottingham as I am sure you do too.
I would be interested to hear which Junior School you went to.
I thought you might be a Notts Forest supporter???!!!!
