The Chelsea endurance test

Adam directing the build at Chelsea Hi everyone,

With only a few days to go until the deadline for building the garden, I'm absolutely shattered!

Building a garden for Chelsea is like an endurance test, working from 7am to 8pm every day, but the whole experience is still brilliant. The QVC Garden - nearly there!

Events took an unexpected turn

The build hasn't quite gone to plan. On the second day Richard, who runs the landscape side of the business, got run over by a forklift truck and broke his foot!

It means I've been doing two jobs, having designed the garden and now overseeing the build too. It's 24/7! But I've been working with some excellent people - all the guys and girls have been fantastic.

The mood at Chelsea

The atmosphere at Chelsea is a funny one this year - almost eerie. There are less show gardens this time round so it seems quieter. But the Chelsea pavilion is starting to fill up and things are getting livelier.

Working on the QVC Garden (Adam in the background wearing the hat) We're nearly there with the planting, and things are falling into place. I'm really chuffed with the poems and oak panelling, so overall I'm a happy man.

Fingers crossed for when the judges visit the garden.

Take care,

Adam

Meet my Chelsea Flower Show team

Adam Frost on site Hi everyone,

We've started work on the QVC Garden at Chelsea as part of the 17-day build up leading to the show.

It's really full-on and busy, but my team are good fun and we have a laugh together.

The guys are divided into the landscape side and the design side. I work on the design side of things, alongside a Japanese lad called Tats, who is a great designer and also a very good landscaper.

Adam and team-mate working on siteThen there's Richard who runs the landscape company, and to be honest I can appear relaxed because all the pressure is on him really! I've designed it, now he's got to build it. I do get involved in the building (as you can see here on the left!), but in reality a lot of the organisation is handed over to him.

QVC Garden under constructionI can't see the point in doing anything unless you're going to have some fun, which is my attitude to everything we do really.

I'll keep you posted about how the garden is coming along in the next few days.

Take care,

Adam

Adam explains the plant choices for the QVC Garden

Adam Frost reading Hi everyone,

One of my biggest aims for the QVC Garden at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show is to make it simple enough so that you can recreate in your own gardens the parts of it you like.

Have a look at this short video clip to learn more about the plants I'm using in the garden.

Plants and flowers in the QVC Garden

If you're interested, here's the QVC Garden's full planting list.

Happy gardening,

Adam

Daydreaming about the Chelsea Flower Show

Adam Frost surrounded by flowersHi everyone, Adam here.

Preparations for the QVC Garden are still on track. It's all quite relaxed at the moment, but the excitement is building all the time.

Visiting the forge and the quarry

I've been up to Anwick Forge in Sleaford to sort out the ironmongery. They're doing the steelworks for the water chutes on the garden walls (see the picture of the garden, right), and they've been making up a few ideas for me to have a look at.QVC Garden in grey scale

We've agreed the colour will be a gun-metal grey. As well as the chutes they're also doing the grid for the top of the raised fire pit in the cooking area, which should look great.

Tim and Fran at the forge are brilliant and they love what they do. I worked with them last year when they supplied the steel works for my Chelsea garden, so we've got a good working relationship.

Plant-wise, I've spoken to David Howard from Howard's Nurseries, so I know my plants are coming along nicely. I just need to finalise a few shrubs.

I've also been to the Clipsham Quarry to see the Clipsham stone we're using for the water features and poems. We've chosen the font for the poems, which I can only describe as curly and romantic!

For more info about the different materials I'm using, take a look at this short video clip:

Using poetry in the QVC Garden

Adam Frost reading a book Hi everyone, Adam here.

As you might have picked up from reading my earlier blogs, the theme of this year's QVC Chelsea garden is creating a space for two people to enjoy together. One of the ways I want to do this is using poems.

The garden features stone walls along the the sides, and parts of these walls will be engraved with extracts from poems.

The idea is she sends a poem to him, and he responds with a poem to her. The poems are a secret until the garden is finished. I've chosen extracts from Wordsworth, Keats, Yeats and Tennyson, and as well as building on the themes of the garden, it's done to make me look slightly more intelligent than I actually am!

Have you ever thought of bringing poetry into your garden? Adding pieces of art that you like into your garden, whether sculpture, ornaments, poetry or mosaics, is a great way to make a garden your own.

Adam
