When it comes to shooting the new advert campaign for one of our top brands, no time or expense is spared!
QGossip was lucky enough to go behind the scenes on the shoot for the new Diamonique promotion and see exactly what goes on...
It all begins with laying out the jewellery that the models are going to wear for the filming (right), which involves sorting out a bewildering jumble of bags, samples and loose pieces from the Diamonique collection.
There are also the outfits to get ready - Butler & Wilson supplied these amazing designer dresses dripping with sequins and hand-finished details (right). As the promo reflects both gold and silver Diamonique jewellery, the models get to wear dresses in both colours.
Down in the studio it's all hands on deck as they get the dramatic blacked out set ready for the shoot. There are three cameras to catch all the action, lighting technicians, a pyrotechnics expert and two directors. The room is buzzing as everyone does their thing while the models are having the final touches applied to their hair and make-up by the professional stylist.
As soon as the models Claire, Nina and Erica are on the set Jason, the director, quickly takes them through the routine (left), and they have a couple of practice runs without the cameras rolling.
The storyboard for the promotion calls for two looks to reflect both gold and silver Diamonique, plus shots with full lighting, silhouettes with added smoke-machine action and spectacular pyrotechnics.
The first couple of takes are shot without the pyrotechnics, before Tom, the expert, sets up for the fireworks and the cameras roll again.
The girls look amazing with streams of sparklers shooting up behind them as they dance (right), and the final shot looks even better when it's replayed on the monitor. There's a quick change of outfits for the 'gold' look as Tom is only with the crew for another half hour and they need to shoot the pyrotechnics sequence in the gold jewellery and dresses.
With the girls ready to go again there's a quick blast of smoke to give the hazy look (left), then the cameras roll.
Tom's saved two rounds of fireworks for the final sequence, so the models run through non-stop with the music track and Jason cues Tom in to release the pyrotechnics (right). It goes like clockwork and there's a round of cheers as the fireworks die out.
After a quick break for lunch it's back to the studio for close-ups of the jewellery and more technical shots. By the time the shoot wraps everyone's exhausted but elated with the footage. All it needs now is editing, sound, a voice-over and it's ready for TV.
So that's a day in the life of a QVC advert shoot - it's hard work but really satisfying when it all comes together!
