Kathy Van Zeeland chats about her bag collection
Since my bags are appearing on Friday's Fashion Day, I thought I'd pop down and have a little chat about them.
How I started
I started Kathy Van Zeeland bags about four years ago when I was designing for one of the biggest accessory companys in America. I really wanted to start up on my own as I thought I could bring something fresh to the market.
My maiden name is Van Zeeland, so I named the company in tribute to my father who had recently passed away. Plus I have three sisters and wanted the Van Zeeland name to continue.
My inspiration
When thinking up new designs for my bags, I travel all over the world. I'm really inspired by the ready-to-wear fashion from the runways. I take note of the colour, style and details of upcoming trends - even down to the trims being used that season.
My biggest inspiration is that customers love the bags and feel great wearing them. It makes me feel on top of the world when I hear people have received compliments when carrying one of my bags.
My designs
I love to use three iconic symbols in my work - the heart, crown and the fleur de lys. I also think belt and buckle details are great, and I use them a lot too.
I believe age is just a number, and it's all about having the right attitude. I try to bring this idea through my designs.
Autumn trends
This autumn is all about beautiful jewel colours like lagoon blue, mustard, burgundy and bottle green. This season, patent and textured bags are going to be big. Chunky jewels will be everywhere, as well as pleating and lots of detailing.
My favourite bag
It's too hard to pick a favourite bag! But I guess the bag that started my collection has become a bit of a signature shape for me. The belted shopper has a soft, gathered top which is so feminine!
It's also elasticated so it's very easy to get in and out of. Because I love the shape so much, I try to reinvent it by using different fabrics and fresh design ideas.
Celebrity inspiration
I am a huge fan of Oprah Winfrey. She inspires me in so many ways! It would be such an honour to have Oprah carrying one of my bags.
Exciting new lines
I've just launched my new luggage line in the USA, and am going to bring it to the UK early next year. The range incorporates everything a woman loves about her handbags - colour, interesting shapes and great quality.
I'm also thinking about starting my own fashion jewellery and watch range, but it's still in the early stages of development.
