Dale Franklin reveals his simple pleasures…

Dale FranklinHi everyone,

My favourite thing in the world is to spend time with my family. I'm very lucky as we live out in 'the sticks' by London standards, and I love going for long walks in the beautiful Surrey heathland at the back of our house. It's totally unspoilt and hasn't changed much in thousands of years.

You never know what you'll see out there - one day I spotted roe deer, a grass snake, lizards and an adder. It's also home to rare birds and butterflies, which are lovely to spot. And best of all it's totally FREE!

I used to love walking our beloved Bearded Collie Emma. I would walk for miles and the habit stayed after she passed. I don't see as much wildlife as I used to, primarily because my son Jack never stops talking (can't think where he gets that trait from)! Being out in the open also encourages my daughter Alex to sing out loud - luckily she has a good voice - but the wildlife doesn't seem to appreciate it much.

Richard Jackson: Advice for dealing with garden pests and diseases

Richard JacksonI love my gardening but I don't get enough time to do it, so the plants in my garden have got to grow themselves and be resistant to pests and diseases.

Coping with plant diseases

Try and buy disease-resistant plants. For instance, older varieties of roses are susceptible to mildew and black spot, while new generations of roses are virtually entirely resistant to those diseases - so grow these instead!

Richard Jackson: Tips for sprucing up beds and borders

Richard Jackson in the gardenHello! We're in mid-summer now and what with all the BBQs and garden parties, you want friends and family to see your garden at its beautiful best!

A great way to brighten up your garden is with vibrant and structured beds and borders. Follow my handy tips for sprucing them up:

Replace old plants: Bite the bullet and get rid of any plants past their best.

Neaten up borders: Cut back plants that have overgrown their space. Now is a safe time to cut back most plants because, with a bit of watering, they'll grow back very quickly.

Add colour: It's amazing how much better borders will look with some carefully chosen vibrant plants. You can use pots and bedding plants.

Glen Campbell: My top tips for sizzling summer style

Glen Campbell with fashion model Hi everyone!

Summer is a great time to play around with fashion trends, but it can also be quite tricky to know what to wear and how to wear it. But don't panic, I have a few tips and tricks to help you take the hassle out of summer style.

1. Choose the right fabric
Fabric choice is really important in the summer; if you're going to wear black or brown make sure the fabric is soft and loose. Sheer fabrics are great as they keep you cool and looking summery. Cotton blends are great too, check out Kim & Co for some lightweight trousers and tops.

Claire Sutton: My holiday essentials

Claire Sutton Hello everyone, Claire here!

HOORAY FOR SUNSHINE! I've just got back from my first family holiday abroad and thought I'd catch up with you.

I never go on holiday without...
Because we went abroad this year I took high SPF sun cream, hats, sunglasses, games and colouring stuff... how I wished for an Archos to keep me entertained! Oh and I couldn’t leave without a medical kit... not that it did much good as my son Joe ran into a glass wall and had to go to hospital within half an hour of landing! Thankfully he was ok and still enjoyed the holiday.

Clothes-wise, I always take a sarong - essential for covering up - and a pashmina for the evenings. My favourite trend this summer is the maxi dress. I LOVE them! Oh and I always look out for little strapless tops as I can't stand getting strap marks.

I always pack a book as I love reading on holiday. But my hubby Dan hates me taking them as I get totally absorbed in the story and can't put them down! However, this time I had to keep the children happy so I've only just finished it.

Alison Young solves your latest beauty dilemmas

Alison Young at work

We caught up with our industry expert Alison Young to ask her the latest beauty dilemmas posted by you. If your question wasn't answered this time, don't worry - there'll be more beauty solutions coming very soon. You can also check out Alison Young's Beauty Bible for more beauty solutions.

Crabtree & Evelyn La Source Hand Care KitI have very dry patches on the palms of my hands and wondered if you could suggest a good hand cream for me.

Alison: Dry patches on the palms of your hands can often be like a contact sensitivity. So make sure they aren't itchy, red or weeping. If they are, you may need something from your doctor to help calm it down. Be aware if there's anything stinging or causing it to flake more - such as shampoo, hand cream, washing-up liquid etc. To get rid of the dead skin cells, you should use either Crabtree & Evelyn La Source Hand Care Kit or the Nails Inc Ultimate Hand Micro Dermabrasion Duo. Because of the sensitivity, I would like you to use L'Occitane Shea Butter Body Cream and rub it in like a balm. This is pure shea butter which will help the sensitivity - you don't want essential oils on it yet. Once it feels softer and smoother, then on a long term basis use the L'Occitane Handcream Duo all over your hands.
