Pussy cat doll or mutton dressed as lamb?

Claire in her sequin leggings Let me explain and see quite what you all think about this terribly serious situation…

It all began on my Mummy's birthday, when we were strolling through the shops having had a lovely tapas lunch, and SEQUINS SEQUINS SEQUINS were seductively twinkling from every aisle.

Now you know me, never have I been able to resist the delicious appeal of a sparkly something, so I dived in. At this stage I have to say I was lamenting my age and reminiscing about the years that have passed when I so could and so did wear all the teeny tiny fabulous clothes that are now back in fashion again(that  really confirms the ageing process doesn't it!)

Holding up a pair of sequinned leggings (even writing it makes me smile wryly to myself), I was chatting away saying how fantastic my nieces and God daughters would look in them and my mother piped up with, "Go on try them!". Honestly she did, so that's how it all began…

I decided to try on my new purchase in front of the children and as I emerged from the bedroom in THE sequinned black leggings (with sky scraper heels of course in a vain attempt to lengthen the leg), Maddie cried out, "Oh Mummy, you look like a Pussy cat doll, I LOVE them". Joe proceeded to drop his jaw so it hit the floor and, with a twinkle in his eyes, fell to his knees and clung to my leg. Suffice to say in that mini moment of time I had been made to feel like a Goddess, a feeling I will hang onto for ever.

However a Pussy Cat Doll in a 5-year-old's world could oh so easily be something VERY different in a grown up's world, if you know what I mean!

So, and here's where I need your help. HAVE I CROSSED THE LINE? Is it a purchase that MUST be swiftly returned to be re-bought by a teeny tiny YOUNGER female? Or, can I do it?

Are you as old as you feel? Or am I teetering in the mutton category?! Come on, let's have the debate…

Big laughing love,
Claire xxx

P.S. I may have to keep them just to receive the adoration from the children…worth every penny!

Claire, there is nothing about you that could be described as mutton!
I turned 40 earlier this year and I know what you mean about wondering whether you are trying too hard to recapture your teenage years but I think most of us can get away with anything – we just have to style it a bit differently as we reach different stages of our lives. Judging from your clothes on air, I doubt very much that you would ever attempt to team those leggings with anything that would make them look anything other than classy!
And I for one hope I’ll never be too old for a bit (actually a lot!) of sparkle!

I bet they are fab. If they are very, very, very stretchy can I borrow them for my next DIY hour? Would they be suitable? Would they distract the DIYers and cover up for the fact that I don’t know what a mitre joint is?
I think you should definitely go for it – but don’t wear your Daryl Hannah Ken Paves wig with them, otherwise you will look like Tressy.
    Love ya!

Hi Claire. all I can say is that I am really jealous and wish I could even look good in a pair of non sparkly leggings!! Leggings do not look good on larger ladies in my opinion but I think you will be fine if you wear a top which is perhaps, a little more understated as I can imagine a sparkly Xmas tree look although I am sure you are far too sophistated for that. I am sure you looked gorgeous ( more jealousy!). I went out with guy for 6 years whose main aim it seems was to turn me into his very overpowering cousin with a very overt personality and who was very slim. Needless to say I was the thinist I had ever been – probably since birth- while I was going out with him as I was too scared to eat as he would then call me a weeble ( they wobble and don’t fall down. I have never forgotten that, scared me for life and probably a lot of the reason why my weight is a constant battle, my self esteem and image is low i have a craving for just being normal!) His mum was definately mutton dressed as lamb and the more flesh she had on show the better. Her winter jumpers were so holey they looked like string vests. You are in a league of sophistication Claire so trust your own judgement. If Dan is anything like my husband he only makes comments about the clothes that I wear if he does not like them which I have to say is not very often. You never know you could audition for the role of Sandy in Grease. I bet you look better that ONJ. MUch love Mary

Isn’t it outrageous that other people can damage our inner self like that. Mind you I spent 5 years with someone who gave the reason for not commiting to me that I may be “fat and 40″! Well A) I`m not and B) so what if I was? Insecurities in them I tell you, nice people don’t need to bring others down to make themselves feel better do they?
Besides in some ways I’m glad I experienced HIM as I doubt I’d have realised how fabulous Dan was had I not, if that makes sense!
The mother sounds scarey!!! Imagine your ex horror in your mind to be a weeble and flick him away with a very hard flick!!! Then picture yourself fabulous, smiling, colourful AND happy, and hold that thought strong,

Age is just a number – I think you look fantastic in the leggings, and dont let anyone tell you differently. I am now in my mid fifties, and have dropped a dress size through gym and eating well. I decided to buy a pair of “jeggings” and wear them with a long tunic top. People have paid me so many compliments that it has really boosted my self confidence. Trying something new and different can be a revelation, as we do all tend to get into a bit of a rut, but its just a case of modifying the trends to suit ourselves. You have great taste and a fantastic sense of style. Go for it !!

I will add to the numerous posts here that you look fabulous and looking fabulous is something we are all entitled regardless of age. I say this as a 44 year old who is also rocking the leggings and tunic look because i’s fun and it looks great.
My only advice with regards to your brief of seeking to ‘lengthen the leg’ is that your heels should match the leggings so black sky scrapers or shoe boots will be the icing on your very gorgeous cake!
Age is just a number when one looks as good as you Claire, so jump right in and have fun with your look, that’s what fashion is all about.

Claire you look great so I would go for it. Some women half your age shouldn’t wear leggings of any description but they do. It really is down to your figure and what you wear them with. I am a little bit older than you and am toying with the idea of wearing a short, batwing, cowl-neck dress with black opaque tights and a pair of fabulous suede over the knee boots. I too am a bit undecided but my husband says that I look fab so what can I say. May I borrow your children, they would give me an honest opinion I am sure.

I dont think it’s age that matters but how you look and you look fantastic and can really carry the look off. Looking back at old photos from staff parties it is always the older ones baring more flesh and wearing tighter, trendier clothes than the younger ones and you know what – they look great! If youve got it flaunt it, you might get looks from people either because they fancy you or they are jealous!

I’m not sure you should pop down to Tesco in them but you should definitely wear them on air or out to dinner with your hubby or friends, they look fab.Never have I seen so many sequins in one fashion season,it’s almost too much!Liberace must be quietly seething somewhere in the after-life,lol.I myself purchased a grey, sequinned hoodie and it’s awesome with jeans,I also purchased some lace leggings, which seemed a good idea at the time,ha ha,but will now just wear them like fancy tights with a dress. There really aren’t those strict rules anymore, however, your inner-voice will always tell you what you can get away with if you listen to it.
My 85 year old neighbour wears 3 inch heels EVERYDAY!and I always admire her strut,ME?? I start moaning if i’m forced to wear a 2 inch heel for more than an hour.
LIVE YOUR LIFE CLAIRE,do you! and as long as your face matches the clothing items you desire, you can’t go wrong,so keep using that Gatineau,Decleor,Earle and Elemis….and the rest,I like them all,i’ve just added A’kin to the arsenal as well…it is a war after all, lol.

    Hi Claire,
Go for it you lucky devil, you look STUNNING, your are NOT A PUSSY CAT DOLL, I WOULD SAY MORE OF A ROCK CHICK, DROP DEAD GORGEOUS IN OTHER WORDS, OH HOW I DO ENVY YOU.
I am in my early 40’s and going more for the sequin tops and jackets, especially Simon Wilson’s, he has brought some truly gorgeous fashion to QVC this weekend, I have already been shopping on the net, how naughty am I!! unfortunately I am not able to get out and about and go shopping or out with friends has my eldest son is very poorly and disabled too after having the virus Salmonella many years ago, it has now left him in utter agony all of the time with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. Truly inspiring he his, and a wondeful son, doing an OU course in Sciences at the moment, and then hopefully on his way to Uni in 2010 to study Forensics.
Anyway enough of that talk, you should definitely wear your leggings, and feel on top of the world too, in fact I hope you wear them on set when presenting something like shoes maybe, I have some leggings but they are matte black and very plain, sometimes I find it difficult to know what shoes to wear except for the ballet pumps which I adore, or how about Tiana B dresses as they can double up as tunics to wear with leggings.
Love and best wishes to you and all at QVC
and hope you all have a Wonderful Christmas and a very peaceful New Year.

I saw a photo of Lisa Snowdon in those lacey tights, the caption was mean, and she is beautiful and with legs to die for. So, if they’re mean about her heaven help the rest of us mere mortals!!

    Cheryl,
Thankyou so much, I feel honoured you’ve asked. In fact was toying with the idea of a make-up sort of blog so maybe that’d be nice.
I was maybe going to do a sort of bare faced to fully done and full on look, what do you think?
I can just say tri enzyme from Elemis has been phenomenal for me. I use lots of Elemis but mixed in with all sorts of things; Liz Earle, some Gatineau, gosh alsorts, but I think tri enzyme and pro collagen are particular heros.
I’ll say no more and wait for the response to baring all (face wise!)in my next blog.
    Lots of Love xxxxclaire xxx

Hope you don’t mind me asking but would you wear clear nail varnish for your shows this Friday (18/12)? I think it is very flattering on you.

I just wish you would let us in to your secret of how you stay so jolly; I’ll definitely have a pint of it, whatever it is. Happy New Year to you and your lovely family. You look Fab to me! If I looked that good I would definitely wear them, for special occasions. Good on you :-) and on your mum for encouragining you. How can you resist sequins I love them too! I was a bit annoyed that they are ‘back in fashion’ as I loved them anyway and I don’t really ‘follow’ fashion..I don’t like to wear what I’m told to but what I like and what looks good to me! x

Happy New Year! I hope you have a fun filled, productive, enjoyable and fullfulling year. I know you bring a lot of fun to everyone and I for one am really looking forward to your cheery shows this year.
I realise you probably think that clear nail polish is boring, but I really love the natural look – particularly on you. I hope you can persuade Paula to do plently of shows like that for me! ;)

What a lovely story! Isn’t it magical when your kids tell you that you look fabulous! Their innocence is at times breathtaking. I’m sure like my own children they love you just the way you are. You always cheer me up when I watch you on air as you have an infectious enthusiasm which inspires others like me to be a bit brave, daring and ever so more beautiful wearing fashion and jewellery inspired creations from QVC! May you and your family have a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2010! Ann in Glasgow

Claire…you go girl!!! I am a little older than yourself and only got into leggings this year, with the same trepidation but all my friends say i get away with it as i’m very petite and look younger than my years!! Even my hem lines have crept up, discreetly of course, since turning 40. I found that the leggings added a new dimension to my wardrobe, very warm and comfortable too (oops!! showing the age!!)
You look fab in the photo and remember….life is short, so live it!!!
