Plane stressful

For the first time in quite some time, I am lucky enough to be getting a week off and am heading to New York with my mum and my sister to visit my nephew. This, you would imagine, would be a really positive thing. A chance to unwind, recharge the batterries and de-stress.

Unfortunately, as much as I absolutely love to travel and treasure the opportunity to visit other countries and cultures, I tend to find the whole 'travel' bit of travelling really stressful. Especially catching a plane, checking in on time, following a schedule, worrying if I have gone over my baggage allowance, trying to remember if I have packed everything I need, searching the house four times to find my passport, checking my travel confimation email 14 times to ensure I have my check-in times right… you get the picture!

Now I know I'm not alone in this, but what can we do? I can't exactly carry a burning lavender Yankee Candle with me to the airport to keep me calm and collected, as much as I would like to. So what do I do? And more importantly, what do you do?

For me it is the period just before travelling that I find stressful. I am fine when I am at my destination, but the anticipation and anxiety that builds up just before I depart is exhausting, meaning I usually arrive at my destination requiring a full day of rest just to recover!

If anyone has found any useful ways of taking the stress out of travel, I would love to hear from you. Any little tricks you have or products that are your travel 'must-haves' then let me know as I have two weeks before I leave and can already feel that tightness in my chest and that pounding in my head which usually preceeds any attempt to move anywhere that is further than 5 miles from my home! (I kid you not.)

Generally I am not a stressful or anxious type of person, it only raises its ugly head when I have to travel anywhere, so if you can help I would be really grateful. I look forward to hearing from you all.

In the meantime I will keep drinking my camomile tea and thinking happy thoughts…

    Hi Miceal
I find that being organised reduces the stress of travelling – along with a large Jack Daniels(only one mind) at the airport(but that tale is for another day!!) – back to organisation, make sure your clothes, shoes etc are all chosen, washed, ironed and packed for at least the day before travel. Get all travel documents/money together and in one place(Travelon did you say?) – again the day before – and book a taxi or arrange airport parking. Then on the day itself enjoy a lovely relaxing bath/shower(now this is were your Yankee candles come into play).Leave for the airport in good time to checkin and ENJOY!! Seriously though Miceal i hope you have a brilliant time – i’m so jealous – and come back to us well rested and tanned(remember your Ultrasun!!and dont tell Ali YoungX)I really enjoyed watching the Yankee Candle hour you were hosting on Sunday – i enjoyed your presenting style and look forward to watching(and buying) from you when you get back. Happy holidays MicealXX Love Linda Glasgow

Miceal, Miceal,Miceal chill out!! I feel exhausted & panicked just reading your blog! Seriously though, try using Bach Remedy products. When I was working part of my job was making product presentations to all the staff (including the Management Team) & my knees would be knocking & I would feel sick so I used to take a few drops about 30 mins before the presentations & all would be OK. Even if I made any mistakes I could take it in my stride & make a joke of it!! Make sure you buy one of the digital luggage scales (from QVC of course!)and you will be sure you are not over your allowance. Lastly make lists & tick off eveything as you pack them into your case. Hope this helps, have a great holiday.

Oh, and I thought I was the only one. I am excactly as you described yourself! I went to New York two weeks ago and went through the same things as you, have tried everything I can think off, I am usually a calm organised person, I am a retired nurse and nothing usually flusters me, but going away these days is a nightmare, everything is done on line! our esta’s (they use to be called visa’s) you have to get before you fly, the tickets are on A4 paper again on line, and there is no one there to tell you that its right, oh dear! perhaps I’ll stick to this country in future, I should be alright then, anyway, glad I’m not the only one ha ha.

Google EFT or emotional freedom technique on line. I am an acupuncturist and find that helps and you can do it anywhere. You just tap on some acupuncture points on your face and neck and repeat the phrase: “Even though I am stressed out by travelling, I totally and completely love and accept myself”. You should do it a few times and you will feel yourself settling down. I know this sounds a bit loony but I used it to pass my finals for my degree and I use it with my patients here in Canada all the time. It works.

Well I am off tomorrow, flying to Ireland first for the weekend to meet up with friends and family and then picking up my mum and sister to fly to New York from Ireland on Monday.
    Preparations are under way.
Linda thanks for your organisational tips though I still have a few things to do. I just remembered something I wanted to take this morning, but then remembered it was still in the laundry basket so a last minute wash is happening right now! Not very organised! But I am working on it.
Del – Bachs Flower Remedies is a great idea, I had forgotten about these. I used to use them years ago when I was an actor, I used to take them before I went on stage or before a big audition. Thanks for the reminder.
Brenda, it is so stressful travelling now. Like you I am usually quite together and am apparently good in a crisis, but the whole travel thing seems to knock me sideways! I just don’t get it! I am working on it though.
EFT is something I have never heard of before Leni, though I have used accupuncture before for other ailments. I will definitely Google this and see what I can find out.
Well I am leaving tomorrow, right in the middle of the Royal Wedding, trying to cross London! Because I really needed to add more stress to my trip! LOL.
I have decided to indulge myself and have ordered a car to pick me up really early from my house and drop me at the airport. That way I can just sit back and relax……….I hope.
