Perfect Planning

Just had a little trip out to the Canaries to see my folks. They spend lots of time in Tenerife and for me it’s almost as quick to fly there and see them as it is to drive back to Manchester (with the added bonus of lovely sunshine)!

The warmth on your back in February, when it’s cold, damp and even snowing back home is a lovely luxury – made me feel very privileged. The cuisine was great as always, I know where to go, the same traditional Canarian eateries every time for fresh fish, Canarian stews and soups and my favourite bariquitos (a layered short coffee with condensed milk and liquor 43 – decaf for me).

Whilst I’ve been to Tenerife literally hundreds of times (I practically grew up there) and I know it very well, I haven’t explored the north side of the island in depth. As a child my Dad used to take my brother and I for early morning explorations up Mt Teide, down the coast to little fishing villages and up the hills to traditional farming settlements but we’d only go for a few hours and be home for a late morning breakfast freshly prepared by my Mum; so this time I branched out more.

Kathy Tayler recently returned from an island jaunt around Tenerife and she was full of great ideas of where I must visit, particularly in the north. I actually love renting a car abroad and discovering pastures new, so I did exactly that. I went in search of an incredible little place called Masca – a perfectly picturesque little hamlet in the north-west of the island and Tenerife’s answer to the Lost World. It really is like discovering a hidden treasure, so unexpected with spectacular views down the steep mountain side to the choppy coastline. There’s a strong wind around the outskirts of the village which carries the bleat of wandering goats from around the valley, it really feels a million miles from the Tenerife many imagine.

I had a lovely break but the holiday caught me a little off guard, I booked it quite soon before I travelled and just felt a little unprepared. They say that summer bodies are made in the winter and spring so I was not holiday ready and refuse be caught short again!

So let’s address the issues in plenty of time:

Problem 1: Lizard legs: scaly legs that have been hidden away all of winter, desperately thirsty for serious hydration.

SOLUTION: Decleor Hydra Radiance supersize collection will offer oodles of beautiful hydration and radiance for the whole body. Start at least a month before you expose the skin and alternate with a tan accelerator to prepare the skin.

Beauty products

Problem 2: Shockingly white pasty skin that hasn’t had any level of skin exposure since last summer. There’s nothing worse than being the noticeable newcomer on day one, blinding everyone with your whiteness.

SOLUTION: Vita Liberata Long Lasting self-tan with mitt and designed to last for up to two weeks so it fades as you safely tan.

Problem 3: Statue heels, cracked and dry, grey and white in colour with unsightly flaky and hard skin. We all suffer from it all year round, it’s an eyesore for everyone and there’s a quick answer.

SOLUTION: Emjoi Micro Pedi will easily and effective remove that hard, cracked and unsightly skin on heels and feet at home. Give yourself around a week before you go away to get them back to their best.

Problem 4: Pale skin that burns easily with exposure especially in the first few days.

SOLUTION: Ultrasun every time, once a day application – take your pick from our website but don’t be without from April to September. Go high factor SPF 50 on the face, the best way for anti-ageing because over exposure to sun is the most damaging single factor for the skin. Protect your skin from ageing and damage, silly not too.

Problem 5: Parched dry straw like hair that suffers with the weather and heat and starts to look dry and misbehave on holiday

SOLUTION: go for Phillip Kingsley four-piece essential Haircare Pack, great price in holiday sizes which includes Elasticizer treatment to seal in moisture, Daily Damage Defence to protect from UV rays and warm temperatures, dry shampoo to get you that extra day without washing and Maximizer for that big beachhead hair. I’m also loving Living Proof Hair products at the moment especially the Thickening Mousse.

Problem 6: Dull boring nails, desperate for love, attention and some fab holiday colours.

SOLUTION: In demand celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann offers a range of colours and treatments, take your pick! Obsessed by nails? These formulas are to the highest standard, deep rich pigmentations and packed with botanicals to provide long lasting colour and hardworking treatments. All of her products are amazing, look out for her cuticle remover to make nails look longer and healthier.

Problem 7: Depleted, over-exposed skin – sun damaged skin which needs help to recoup over night to repair and be ready for the next day

SOLUTION: Lulu’s Holiday Skin in a bottle two-piece set. The cocktail brightens, hydrates and moisturises overnight whilst Holiday in a Bottle gives an instant natural looking colour and radiant glow.

Problem 8: Dry chapped, sun-damaged lips which are very vulnerable in the sun.

SOLUTION: Ultrasun Lip Protection SPF30 – get a trio for £12 and don’t leave the house without them all year around. Super hydrating, it can be used with lip colour and glosses but offers that all important protection for vulnerable lips.

Problem 9: Make-up and sun cream tend to leave a residue on the skin which needs to be effectively removed every night.

SOLUTION: Choose a hydrating cleanser that treats and moisturises the skin whilst removing grime, dirt, sun cream and make-up – try Award-winning and top-rated Elemis Cleansing Balm to melt away impurities and stress or Decleor Micellar Cleansing Oil, with no need to tone afterwards – but use a high facial SPF after use.

TOP TIP: Before going on holiday make sure you exfoliate twice a week – for the body try Decleor 1000 Grain Body Exfoliator and for the face the iconic highly rated Alpha H Liquid Gold – especially good for sun damaged skin and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Problem 10: Pesky insect bites, mosquitos/midges/flys etc. Whether you’re the type that’s bitten to death or troubled by the occasional one.

SOLUTION: simple solutions for the whole family, don’t let warmer weather wash over you this spring summer without ABC Tea Tree Oil and Blemish Stick, harness the natural power of tea tree with this cult favourite. Get one in your first aid kit for home and away, little lifesavers.

Get way ahead of the game and prepare yourself and your body for your holidays and also for the spring and summer in general because there’s nothing worse than not feeling your best at the prime time of the year. For many of us we live for the summer and our much-loved holidays. Where are you going next and what product wouldn’t you travel without?

Best,

Chloe

    Hi Sandra,

Teddy also goes on his holidays to my friends house. They have two dogs that he loves so he has good company and they love him like he’s their own. He’s a lucky boy!
