On yer bike!

Marjoleine Brugman Over the last few months so many of you have kindly commented about my weightloss and getting back in shape, your support has been fantastic and very motivational. I have lost my weight and regained my shape through diet and exercise, predominantly Pilates.

So, I am really looking forward to seeing Marjoleine Brugman this weekend whose machine has been instrumental in helping me achieve my goals. I haven't seen her at all since March so I'm sure she will be amazed at the difference in me - a weightloss of 23lbs and toned muscles.

Spending 30 mins to an hour on a Pilates machine is one thing, however cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats is something else completely and not something I could attempt. So imagine Land's End to John O'Groat's AND back again in 6 days, who would be mad enough to do that?

Well a young man called Ben Rockett (aka 'Rockett Man') who my son has come into contact with through his Reviva Fitness company. Ben is making this attempt to inspire and encourage people that with enough effort and determination, we are all capable of achieving something extraordinary. He will be trying to beat the current World Record by almost 21 hours and more importantly he will be raising money for Cardiac Risk in the Young.

If you would like to read more about this attempt or feel you would like to sponsor him have a look at www.rockettrides.com. We hear so many bad things about the youth of today so it is so refreshing to see a young man quite literally 'get on his bike' to do good. I wish him all the best with his attempt.

Talking about young men, only another 48 hours to wait to my 'date' with Westlife, I'm VERY excited! More of that on next weeks blog.

Much love,
Julia xx

    Hi Julia
Well done again on the weight loss. Its great when you find a form of exercise which you really enjoy and which works for you, as you have done with Pilates. I am still enjoying the gym, but over the last couple of months I have been also going to a weekly Zumba class. It is so much fun, and consists of samba, salsa and latin steps along with a bit of belly dancing ! This combined with fantastic latin music makes the time fly and does not feel like hard work. I am now at a total of 41cm overall so onward andd downward, hopefully. All the best, Morag xx

    Hi Morag
I really wish I had taken all my measurements before I started instead of just my weight. What I do know is that ALL my clothes are too big which is good and bad i.e. expensive!!!!
Zumba sounds brilliant – so much easier to lose weight when you enjoy what you do isn’t it. Well done losing all those cms and keep it up

Hi Julia, you are looking absolutely great! I’ve just hit 50,not happy about that, and am trying to lose weight too.Just to say;you will LOVE Westlife!!! I love them, but my son(he’s disabled, in a wheelchair) and 27 yrs old, went to see them in May at the O2-needless to say they were brilliant! He has every single and album,t-shirts,loads of merchandise. He is a huge fan-and knows ALL the words! They did an ‘IRISH WAVE’ at 02, so hope they do it at Esher.Have a great time, Love Jill, in Purley.

    Hi Julia,
Well i think marjolein will be well impressed with your new Sculptured shape! there are so many people out there selling different types of diets and training strategies, talking the talk but not walking the walk. You have been instrumental in showing what can be achieved through pilates and eating well.
I will tune in on saturday, always makes me smile, this is where it all began for me X. Have you more pilates shows comming up later in August?
    Speak soon, Steve X

Hi, just returned from another search for property in sunny spain. No house but a a lovely golden tan. I took your advice and kept the size 10 Ronnie Nicole dress it fits fine, in fact when you actually measure the 10 and 12 there’s not a lot in it. I used to wear medium Ronnie Nicole dresses as you did, what are you going to do with your size mediums. I have another 7 lbs to go till i reach my target weight.( i didn’t put on any weight, on holiday this time) maybe because it was only a week. My favourite jeans are now to big to wear, so like you could be expensive,to replace things. Ive had a dress altered on the hips, which is where i lost weight first, so i will get favourite items of clothing taken in rather than throw them out. And i also did take measurments at the start of my weight lose regime, but won’t take them again untill iv’e finished. Perhaps all us weight lose girlies should have a TV show. Enjoy Westlife, i’m going to see Status Quo on December 14th, but have a very long holiday in Egypt first, really looking forward to both.
    Take care.

    Hi Julia
I noticed your fantastically toned arms lately, and was about to ask how you had done it – then I saw this post!! You have given me the motivation to get my aeropilates machine back out (it’s been hiding for 8 months since we moved house as I just haven’t had time!) and to get cracking!! It’s my arms that are upsetting me the most at the moment as they used to be really toned. I’m also seriously suffering neck/upper back ache at the moment due to endless amounts of painting very high ceilings, so I think that the machine will help sort that out too!!

I’m sure Ben will really appreciate all the help he can get!
Westlife was good, although in truth didn’t have a great view and it was a nightmare getting out of the car park!!!! Still it was a very thoughtful idea from the kids, and I must have played a lot of Westlife in the car when they were growing up, as we could sing along to most of the songs!!!!!!

    Hello Jill
Thanks for the compliment – you guys are spoiling me lately! 50 is not so bad, but the whole weight thing is definitely harder to control the older we get!
Really enjoyed Westlife – my favourite is Nicky but I think Shane has the best voice. It wasn’t the sort of venue where you could do a Mexican wave as most of the audience were viewing kind of side on! – wouldn’t have missed it though and would recommend it as a very entertaining day out.

    Hi Kathy
Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip to Spain – wasn’t it a bit hot for house hunting? Are you still looking in Denia / Javea area? It really is a lovely area and not just in Summer.
Pleased you took my advice with the Ronni Nicole size 10 – I think the main difference in size was the cut on the shoulder. I still need a 12 in the lower cut options though! Not sure what I will do with my ‘bigger’ clothes – charity maybe??
Westlife was great and all the better cos it was a ‘family’ day out! Don’t know how many more of those we’ll have before the kids are too tied up in their own families!

    Hi Kirsty
I wonder if you saw the back magic last week? – I have one and it is really helpful for relaxing the upper back and neck ( doesn’t take up much space either ). Pilates is really great for toning the arms without bulking them too much. I’m not a fan of weights but I do use just little wrist weights when I’m walking on the treadmill. Swimming is also fab for your arms.
Good luck with the rest of the decorating – hope you’ve nearly finished?

    Hi Julia
Glad to hear you enjoyed the concert even though you didn’t have a great view. I can remember a few years back, Chris took me to see Donny Osmond in Manchester and getting out was a nightmare too, it was absolutely pouring down and the carpark seemed miles away, then you had to wait to get out!
I’ve just read your reply to Kirsty re the Back Magic…. I’ve ordered one and am eagerly awaiting it’s arrival. Usually I get the Total Gym out and put my feet through the wing attachment at the top and lie back on the incline which gives a really good stretch, but because of selling the house it’s been put away in the back of the garage and just lately I’ve been waking up with terrible back pain in my lower back. Then I saw the new Back Magic and ordered one straight away!
Must say I could really see the difference in your body shape whilst you were on screen with Marjorleine, well done you, but please don’t get too thin.
    Take care and speak soon.

    Hi Annette
So you were a Donny Osmond fan ……….. I was in the other camp, i.e. David Cassidy!! – of course that was when I was about 14!!!
The back magic is brilliant but do it gently, not too long the first time you’re on it. When you get used to it you you can reach your arms above your head for even more of a stretch.
Don’t worry, I like my food too much to get too thin

    Hi Julia
Like Gaynor, i too have noticed a remarkable difference in your weight and thought i must read your blog to see what diet you have been using. You look fantastic!! Keep up the good work! It’s very true when you say that losing weight is a lot more difficult as you get older. I am 51 and have always been very slim until the last 3 years when i have put on 3 stone. It doesn’t seem to matter how much exercise i do at the gym or how little i eat, i still don’t seem to be able to lose weight. However, i will persevere as my son is getting married in October and i really need to shape up for the wedding. As you say, it may be expensive to buy new clothes for your new figure, but at least you have a very good excuse!!! Any weight loss tips would be gratefully received.

    Hi Laura
    Thanks for the compliments.
Genuinely I kicked off my weight loss by sticking VERY strictly to the Diet Chef programme. I now only use it occasionally but it has certainly opened my eyes to portion control.
What is working for me is doing an hour of exercise at least 3 times a week – half aerobic ( I do treadmill, or cardioboard, or swing walker ) and half Pilates, mat or machine. And my main dietary tip is to never eat more than 2 slices of bread in a day – sometimes I don’t have any and that’s a huge change for me as I love bread.
It has worked for me and is continueing to work as I haven’t put any weight back on.
I hope my little tips might help you
    keep me posted

Hi Julia, yes it was to hot for house hunting, only looked at a couple of properties in Denia.Going to leave it for a while now. I took one of my Ronnie Nicole dresses to my dress maker to see if they could alter it, even the inner lining has been taken in they have done a marvelous job at trimming the outer dress part as well, and i look even slimmer,”Fantastic” the other Ronnie dresses will follow, they are to good a quality not to wear any more, or to give away,so having them altered is the only option.(the ones that can be altered) luckily i think mine are all ok to be altered, perhaps you could do the same with yours, especialy if you like the styles.
You do the same as me with the bread, if i have toast in the morning which isn’t very often i don’t have any more bread that day, I usually have fruit or salad at lunch time (no bread) it really helps with the “Bloats” to. We will all be trim little girlies. But don’t go to far, you look fine now.
    Bye for now.

    Hi Julia
Just wanted to agree with the other ladies who have commented on your weight loss and changing shape. Am taking on board your tips and after I recover from major surgery, chemo etc am really keen to get back in shape and lose the 2 stone I have gained. Will also be able to get out my pilates aero again and vibration platform. Any more tips would be appreciated. Also I have noticed your nails -they look fabulous. What is the secret? Mine are in a mess from 16 years of wearing acrylics and tips and now just split and flake.
You are so down to earth, and have been such an inspiration over the summer. Well done!
I have been shopping with QVC for 12 years and just started reading the blogs. This is my first post or comment……

    Hi Kathy
What a good idea to have your Ronni dresses altered – good incentive to keep the weight off too! It doesn’t matter so much with the ‘floaty’ styles but for the more fitted styles a possibility.
I totally agree about the bloated feeling bread can give – probably the yeast? Trouble is I love the taste and texture – particularly a yummie wholemal crust with soup BUT I now have a mantra – ‘bread is the enemy’!!!!

    Hello Janet
Thankyou thankyou thankyou …….. you said the magic words, ‘you look younger’!!!! I had been thinking of having a haircut to try and look younger, but I like my hair long so I am so pleased trimming down and toning up has had the same effect.
OK – arms: have you got the Pilates Upper Body VHS/DVD? If so do it twice a week, if not do extra reps of the arm exercises on the regular DVD. I only do the rebounder once a week as I also have a treadmill at home and I walk on that for 30 mins wearing wrist weights prior to my Pilates workout. If you don’t have a treadmill just go for a brisk walk wearing your weights. I also swim when I get chance – breaststroke / backstroke both great for arms without bulking the shoulders too much.
    Hope this helps

    Hello Anne
Firstly welcome to the blog and secondly and more importantly I hope you are on the mend.
The main thing is to wait until you feel upto exercising before you start. Your body has been / is going through massive trauma so only do gentle exercise to start with – 5 minutes a couple of times a day is really good to get you started – obviously check with your doctor that it is ok to go back to exercising.
Your nails will also have suffered with all the medication, and it will take them a while to recover BUT massage your cuticles twice a day with anything containing avocado oil ( OPI Avoplex for example ) or buy some pur avocado oil and massage into cuticles then all over your hands followed by Decleor Handcream – the latter is what I have been doing for the last 6 weeks. Buffing you nails is also good for the circulation and you can try a strengthening product from any of our nail brands which should help.
Thanks for being such a loyal customer and I hope you start to feel better soon

I am so pleased I have inspired you to kickstart your exercise regime – you made me smile with your comment about stopping around the middle on it’s way South!LOL! Funny thing is I feel so much better too. We went for a walk yesterday and it is very hilly where I live in the North Downs. Although I broke sweat I didn’t get out of breath at all – certainly not the case back in March.
I’m not wanting to lose more weight now, just want to keep off what I have lost.

I wish I had the motivation, home alone during the day with not much food in the cupboard, but carbs are my problem and not a great meat lover either. I have a pilates machine here but no room to leave out. I need a personal trainer of some kind, to get me started, know of anyone? Congratulations again.
