Our guests share their gardening tips with you…

Outdoor furnitureEven though the weather might not be playing ball right now, we're still trying to make the most of our gardens when the sun does come out and on those warmer evenings too!

So, get ready for our Outdoor Living shows coming up on Friday 21st June at 10am and 7pm when we'll be inspiring you to make the most of your outdoor space.

We caught up with our gardening guests ahead of the shows and here they are to share a few hints and tips with you all…

Garden lighting with Gill Gauntlett

Gill GauntlettChoosing our garden lights is becoming as important as our choice of plants – even more so this year. The poor weather for the first six months of the year and the unsettled forecast, has meant we must discover other ways of showing our gardens to their best advantage.

This is where clever lighting comes into its own. Our wonderful selection of garden lights at QVC guarantees something for everybody.

The old days of relying on electric cables and the dreaded plug are well behind us and for a small outlay, our gardens can be transformed into places of delight and tranquility. Today's lighting is so easy to place exactly where it can be seen to its best advantage.

We can choose lights that change colour which creates a magical effect in any garden. We can now have lighting almost anywhere we want and we all have our favourite spot to illuminate, so, what are we waiting for?

Herb potting with Richard Jackson

Richard JacksonPlant something mouthwatering on your patio and pot up some herbs. Make sure the pots have a drainage hole at the bottom and cover it with a 2.5cm (1”) layer of broken bits of pot or polystyrene.

Pot up the plant with my special Multi-purpose Compost, water them in and place them in a sunny spot. Feed them once a fortnight with Flower Power and they’ll grow even faster! My top five must-have herbs are basil, thyme, marjoram, rosemary and French parsley.

My top tips are…

  • Herbs with coloured leaves, like purple sage and golden thyme, look extra pretty and taste just as good
  • When picking herbs, only use a few sprigs at a time rather than strip the plant bare. That way you’ll be able to harvest your herbs all summer
  • Most herbs can also be planted in sunny spots in the garden. Mint is best kept in pots, in borders it can spread like a weed
  • For the best flavour, pick your herbs early in the day

Water features with Gabrielle Bradshaw

Gabrielle BradshawA water feature adds a real sense of magic and depth to any garden. The sound of water is calming and relaxing and the sight of water dancing in the sunshine creates a twinkling focal point which is a delight to watch.

Years ago, water features were expensive to buy and difficult and disruptive to fit. Smart Solar water features are simple to install, easy to maintain and wonderful to enjoy. All you need to do is choose a spot where the solar panel can get maximum sunlight and make sure the water is topped up from time to time. Then sit back and enjoy!

Look out for the brand new three-tiered natural slate fountain that’s coming up in the Outdoor Living show on June 21st (item 502826). The beautiful tiered slate will enrich every garden, with the natural stone enhancing the colours of all plants and flowers around it.

The soothing fountain will create a gentle and captivating focal point as well as encouraging wildlife and delighting everyone who sees it. Cut from natural material every fountain is slightly different and therefore unique. It’s the perfect size and shape to bring elegance and charm to even a tiny garden or balcony!

Outdoor furniture with Beverley Cressman

Beverley Cressman and familyI strongly believe that the outdoors, be it your garden, patio or even balcony becomes an extension of your home – that extra room. You should have furniture that is stylish and comfortable so that you feel at home.

There have been some great steps made in garden furniture toughness and durability, with stronger fabrics and rust-proof materials. Here at QVC we have some fantastic and very affordable lines incorporating the on-trend neutral colours, aluminium frames and use of quality Textoline material in our chairs. Textoline looks like a woven fabric but it’s a polyester yarn with a resin coat which makes it highly durable and resistant to water and stains. Really comfortable too!!

Beverley's garden tableI have a table, chair and parasol set here from QVC which not only looks incredibly stylish but it copes with all the abuse from the family too! (three boys, dog and cat!). I can fold up the chairs and the table is light enough to move anywhere around the garden. (see photo on left with two of my sons, Alex and Sam).

On Friday I will be presenting an outdoor rocker which has proved to be a big hit. We all find that rhythmic back and forth motion to have a soothing and relaxing effect. Imagine rocking in this and watching your garden or the world go by outside. Our outdoor furniture here at QVC looks so good that I would be very happy to use it inside my home too!

Hope you enjoyed that little taster, but make sure you tune in for more from our Outdoor Living shows on June 21st.

Hi beverley on sat 5th April you appeared on qvc, you were wearing a beautiful pair of wedge shoes with a bow on the front. Could I be really cheeky and ask where you purchased the shoes as they was lovely. Hope you can help. Debbie Birmingham
