Our beloved Tyra has gone

Simon with TyraIt’s with immense sadness that I share the news, our oldest dog died at the weekend. Tyra, our Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Reetriever was our constant companion for almost 15 years, and although she wasn’t really ill, she was blind and deaf and becoming more infirm with each week that went by. She died on Friday very peacefully.

We are all very sad that she is no longer with us, but happy that she was such a fabulous dog with the whole family and glad of all the great memories we have of her. We are also glad that we have our (relatively speaking) new boy 'Jamie' to snuggle up to when we’re watching TV – the kids are especially happy he’s here at the moment.

No matter how much you prepare yourself for the inevitable, it always hits you hard and takes a long while to come to terms with. Tyra was a wonderful dog and she has a very special place in my heart.
Simon x

Dear Simon, I’m sorry to read of the loss of your doggy Tyra. She looked a very beautiful dog from your picture. You and your family must be very sad, our dogs have a wonderful way of becoming a part of the family and I know I greived for my dog Jasper as if he was a human member of the family when I lost him. It’s lovely to know you have Jamie as he will bring great comfort to you all. Remember the great times with Tyra, she will always be in your heart. With love Rebecca xxx

Simon so sorry to hear of the loss of your canine friend. I am not a dog lover – would not hurt one but would not have one – but my son and his family loved their old dog Saffy, unfortunately they had to do her a great kindness earlier last year after watching her suffer with cancer. What made it all so worse was my Daughter in laws Mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the same time and Saffy and Mary passed away a week apart. They soon got a new puppy called Ruby but Saffy will also be remembered.

My thoughts are with both yourself and the family; I know from experience as, I’m sure, do a lot of dog owners, how you must be feeling. I breed boxers and we had to have our eldest put to sleep at 12 years of age, which is old for a boxer. He had a good, productive life and couldn’t have been treated any better. I console myself with that fact, that I gave him all I could, and he had such an enviable existence, I couldn’t have done any more for him. That was in 2008, which may seem ages ago, but the painful memory is still there. Currently, I have two boxers, a dad and his son, and when anything happens to one, I will have another, as neither has ever been ‘an only child’!
    Take care.

So sorry to hear about your dog Tyra. I think we sometimes forget how much a part of the family our pets are until they go. Our 14 year old cat died at the beginning of January and occasionally I still try let him in in the morning. Best just to focus on the happy memories.
    Best wishes

Aww, so sorry to hear that Simon. They are such individual wee characters so it’s hard to lose them. I hope once the sadness lifts you and your family will take comfort in all the special memories of her you have.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Simon. It’s hard to explain to people who have never had a dog just how big a loss it is for your family. Take care x

    Hi Simon
I was so sorry to read about Tyra, I’ve been there many times with dogs and it’s a real sad time they are such a special part of the family, I really don’t want to lose another dog this year, I had to say goodbye to my lovely Rosie 10 year old Yorkie who had a horrible bladder tumour that couldn’t be treated in November and the year before that My tiny Chihuahua was sadly put to sleep when his heart gave way. I’m left with Rosie’s sister and two younger Yorkshire terrier’s Dennis and Toots and did I mention I run a Cattery!! Animal Mad!!!
    God bless Tyra
    Best wishes

    Dear Simon
you have my deepest sympathy:- losing Tyra must be a sad loss indeed. I think Tyra starred in the dog nutrition programme with you. She was a beautiful lady with very winning ways and a gorgeous manner.
It can be very hard coping with the ‘space between our hands’ that losing a beloved pet leaves, so I’m so glad that you have another to help you and your family through.
Tyra had a wonderful life with you and your family and although it is tough at first, her memory will live on and become a precious gift.
God bless and keep you in his care. Lesley.

Thank you all so much for your very kind messages of sympathy and support. I know all dog owners out there understand what it feels like to loose a friend ( even though they’re a four legged variety). We are beginning to come to terms with it and your messages have been a great help, so many thanks again!
By the way our ‘new’ boy Jamie is doing’ fine and soaking up all the extra attention that is coming his way now.

Just read your blog Simon and the very sad news about your dog Tyra. I know exactly how you and your family are feeling, we had to have our beloved Border Collie Toby put to sleep just over a year ago now. I am still struggling to get over it even after 14 months.
You will have all those happy, fond memories to look back on and remember them forever. Our Toby was 15 years old too.
    Enjoy your new boy Jamie!
