On applying make-up with bad eyesight…

Magnifying mirror Q. Hi Alison, over the past few years my eyesight has deteriorated so that I need glasses for reading and close-up tasks. This is affecting putting on make-up as I need to remove my glasses to put on eye make-up, but my eyesight without glasses is not good enough to see properly! I do not want to wear contact lenses (squeamish) so do you have any tips or ideas for applying make-up with blurry eyesight, especially mascara? Thanks in anticipation, Susanne.

A. I'd definitely recommend a great free-standing magnifying mirror that myself, Julia and Alison Keenan cannot live without. It makes a massive difference especially when putting on your eye liner – they are a Godsend.

I am long-sighted and also have problems with applying eye-makeup (additionally, one eye is worse than the other, which can lead to some interesting eyeliner effects!). I have a freestanding magnifying mirror for use at home, but when I am out and about I rely on a handbag version that I bought from QVC (but can’t find on the web site any more). It is a silver-coloured mirror/tweezers set with two illuminated mirrors, one magnifying, which fold into a neat pocket-sized unit. Trust me – I would NOT be without it.
