New year beauty tips from our top brands

The new year is upon us so there's no better excuse to revamp and rethink our beauty regimes. To give you a helping hand, here are a few top tips from the experts at L'Occitane, Liz Earle and Elemis. Here's to glowing, radiant-looking skin in 2011!

Soften dry hands and feet
To soften dry skin on your hands and feet, try my favourite home-spun recipe. Simply mix together two tablespoons of light olive oil (not extra virgin, as this is too sticky) or grapeseed oil with two tablespoons of granulated sugar.

Rub this scrub into hands and feet, focusing on any hardened, calloused areas. Rinse under warm running water and pat dry for instantly silky-smooth skin. Follow with rich moisturisers such as Hand Repair and Foot Repair.

Protect lips
Icy weather can cause lips to become chapped, so it’s important to keep the thin skin here moisturised. Bear in mind that lip balms made with mineral oil or petroleum jelly don’t re-moisturise, they simply sit on the surface. So to keep lips soft and comfortable choose a lip balm made with plant oils or purified lanolin. For rich conditioning and beautiful sheen try our Sheer Pink Lip Shimmer.

In order to minimise what you buy to replace those out-of-date or empty products, supplement them with some key multi-use products to update your New Year look.

If you buy only one thing buy the L'Occitane 100% Shea Butter, which will gently melt to give dry winter skin a bit of a glow. Use it to tame your eyebrows, to relieve dry parched lips, as a great base for lipstick, for cuticles and also to tame the ends of your hair. It really is a multi-use winter essential.

Use a mask twice a week
If you make one New Year’s beauty resolution I really want it to be to use a mask twice a week! This can make the difference to your skin, making it look brighter, fresher and rejuvenated.

Elemis has masks for every type of skin. If you’re concerned with congestion I would recommend Herbal Lavender Repair Mask. If you need a post-party season pick me up and want a fresher, brighter complexion I would recommend Fruit Active Rejuvenating Mask .

If you’re concerned about excess oil or shiny skin I would use Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Gel Mask or finally if your main concern is fine lines and wrinkles, Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Mask leaves skin firmer and more youthful looking.

For all masks, apply onto cleansed skin after exfoliating, leave on for 8-10 minutes then wash off with warm water. Follow with your moisturiser and make sure you try and use your mask twice a week!

Body brushing
A great way to boost your metabolism especially after the excesses of the party season! The Elemis Body Brush uses natural cactus bristles to kick-start the circulation and sweep away dead skin cells.

Brush dry skin before you shower in an upwards motion from the soles of the feet, avoiding sensitive areas. After brushing get into the bath or shower then for an added skin booster use a scrub such as Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Scrub for irresistibly touchable soft and smooth skin.

Make a clean sweep
Cleansing and toning are two of the most important things you can do for your skin. A good cleanser removes grime and impurities for a clearer, brighter complexion while a balanced toner leaves skin fresh, smooth and ready for moisturising.

So make your number one beauty resolution to give skin a fresh start with our amazing value skin-boosting basics. It’s the best start you can give to your skin this New Year.

Rescue post-party skin

After weeks of partying and general festive over indulgence, detox your complexion and give skin a kick-start into 2011. Facial massage is a quick and easy way to stimulate blood flow and bring more oxygen and nutrients to skin cells; it also helps flush out impurities along the way.

Applying a few golden drops of Aromessence to your fingertips first will help fingers glide over skin making your massage that much more relaxing, pleasurable… and effective.
